' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. WILLIAMSON, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR TO J. ELLIOTT RIDDELL, OF SAME PLACE.
MIRROR.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 664,365, dated December 18, 1900.
Application filed March 23. 1900. Serial No. 9.844. (No model.)
' certain newand usefulImprovements in Mirrors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and I0 use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in mirrors,- and more particularly to shavingmirrors, the object of the invention being to so construct a mirror'support that it can be secured to the body of the user and adjusted to reflect the face or head of the user in any position he may assume.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a view of the device folded, and Figs. 3 and 4 are views of details of construction.
My improved mirror comprises three sections 1, 2, and 3, all preferably of wood. The section 1 is a plate adapted to be held against the breast of the user by means of a belt or strap 4:,which is passed through slots 5 in the upper portion of section 1 and secured around the body of the user in any approved manner. Inclined flexible bands 5 connect the strap 4 withthe lower portion of plate 1 to insure a steady support to the mirror. A block 6 is secured to the upper face-of section 2,and said block is connected by a hinge 7' to the lower end of section 1 in such-manner as to hold the section 2 at right angles to section 1 when the former is in its working position. The section 2 comprises a tray or support, and a spring-wire clamp 8 is secured to the upper face of the section 2, at one side thereof, and is bent between its ends to form a spring-jaw normally pressing against the upper face of section 2 to hold the sheet of paper in place for the reception of the lather from the razor when the mirror is used for shaving purposes. I 3
The section 2 is connected with section 3 by a hinge 10, the hinge-pin 9 therein projecting beyond the hinge and screw-threaded for the reception of a thumb-nut 10 to bind the hinge and secure the section 3 at any angle desired. The section 3 comprises a frame in which a mirror 11 is supported, and said mirror may be made of any desired size and shape to suit the fancy of the trade. To the outer face of the section 3 and the under face of section 2, at the hinged ends of said sections, ornamental blocks 11 are secured to serve as stops and prevent the section 3 fromfalling below a horizontal position and prevent straining and injury to the hinge.
An arm 12 is pivoted to the section 1 and another arm 13 is pivotally supported on a rod 13, secured to the under face of the sec tion 2, near the hinged connection of said sections, and said arm 13 is movable in a slot, as shown. The arm 13 is made with an internally-threaded enlargement 14, and, the arm 12 is provided with a hole in alinement with the threaded opening in the enlargement 14; for the passage of a set-screw 15,
adapted to clamp the arms 12 and 13 together and secure the sections in any position to which they may be adjusted. Said screw 15 is preferably upset at its end to prevent its accidental removal, and a washer of flexible 8o material (preferably rubber) is disposed on the screw 15 between the arms 12 and 13 to more securely lock said arms when the screw is operated.
When the device is folded, the section 3 will lie flat on the section 2 and the section 1 will be supported on the block 11 on the outer face of section 3, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
Various slight changes might be resorted to in the general form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention,
and hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to limit myself to the precise de- 5 tails set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations 1. A shaving-mirror comprising three sections hinged together and constructed and arranged to fold upon each other, one section adapted to be secured to the body of the user, another constructed to support a sheet of paper and the third adapted to support a mlIIOI.
. 2. A shaving-mirror comprising three sections hinged together and constructed to fold upon each other, means for securing said hinged sections at different adjustments, and
means for secu rin gone of said sections to the body of the user.
3. The combination with a mirror, a shelf hinged thereto and plate hinged to said shelf, of means connected with said plate for securing the same to the body of the user, means for adjusting the relative angle of the shelf and mirror, arms pivotally connected to the plate and shelf, one. of said arms having an internally threaded enlargement and a set-screw passing through the other arm and into the threaded enlargement to secure the shelf in any-position to which it may be adj usted. r
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
I JOHN B. WILLIAMSON. Witnesses:
HARRY L. MEANS, F. J. WIEDHAUS.
