To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM HENRY Os- BORN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Louisville, county of Jefferson, and State of Kentucky, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Copy- Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to copy holders, the embodiment illustrated herewith being especially applicable to typewriters, although it may be found of service in other ways.

An object is the provision of a copy holder which, when attached to a typewriter may be readily adjusted to hold a stenographers note book, or other copy, in the most favorable position for the typists observation, which when not in service may be swung to one side out of the way, and which when it is desired to cover the machine, may be folded down across the front of the typewriter, where it will not interfere with the placing of the cover.

A further object is the production of a copy holder simple in construction, economical in manufacture and durable in service.

With the foregoing, and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, wherein is set forth an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that such changes and modifications may be resorted to as come within scope of the claims appended hereunto.

Referring to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate similar parts in the several views; Figure 1, is a front elevation of a typewriter with my improved copy holder applied thereto, showing the same, in full lines as folded down across the front of the machine so that the machine may be covered, and in dotted lines as erected and supporting a note book; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the holder extended; Fig. 3, a plan of the holder extended; Fig. 4, a plan of the holder in an adjusted position; Figs. 5, 6, and 7 side elevations of the holder in different positions.

Referring to the drawing -1 designates a typewriter of a make well known on the market, having horns or handles -2- projecting from each side thereof. My improved device comprises an attaching member an intermediate swinging member 4-, a rotatable member 5- and a copy retaining member -6. The attaching member 3, comprises a pair of parallel strips or plates 7, and 8, having concaved portions 9, and 10-, adapted to fit about a support, such as the horn 2, on the typewriter, being clamped thereon by suitable means such as screws 11. The swinging plate 4, is secured between the plates 7, and 8, at the outer ends thereof, by suitable means such as rivets 12 or screws 13. On the outer end of the swinging plate 4, the rotatable post 5, is erected, and adapted to be rotated thereon. Intermediate the length of the post 5 is a joint 14 which provides means for flexing the post in a plan at right angles to its length. The retaining member 6, is rigidly secured on the outer end of the post and eX- tends at right angles therefrom. The copy retaining member comprises a pair of parallel strips or plates 15, and 16, of which one is secured to the post. The plates 15, and 16, are spaced apart by suitable means such as Washers -17 and are secured together by suitable means such as rivets -8-. One or both of the plates 16, and 16, are of such resiliency as to firmly hold copy placed between them, one of the plates is provided with an offset, as 19 which bears upon the other plate, providing means whereby single sheets may be firmly held.

With the attaching member affixed to a support projecting from the side of a typewriter (as shown in Fig. 1) the second member may be moved in a horizontal plane, through practically three quarters of a circle, with the pivot 12 as a center, the post 5 with attached copy retainer 6, may be turned through a complete circle on the vertical aXis of the post and the copy retainer may be placed at any inclination between the horizontal and the vertical by fiexion of the joint 14 in the pos A combination of the movements described permits of a wide range of adjustment to suit varying conditions.

It is thought that from the foregoing description, the many advantages of my inven tion may be understood, and that any one skilled in the art may make and use the same, and

I claim:

1. An attaching member comprising a pair of spaced parallel rectilinear strips having oppositely disposed concavo convex portions near one end thereof, bolts passing through said strips in proximity to said concavo convex portions, a strip pivot'ally mounted between the opposite ends of said strips and adapted to swing in a plane parallel therewith, a post pivotally mounted on said swinging strip, a copy retaining member secured on the end of and extended at right angles to said post whereby it may be swung in a complete circle in a plane parallel with said attaching member.

2. An attaching member comprising a pair of spaced parallel rectilinear strips having oppositely disposed concavo convex portions near one end thereof, bolts passing through said strips in proximity to said concavo convex portions, a strip pivotally mounted between the opposite ends of said strips and adapted to swing in a plane parallel therewith, a post pivotally mounted on said swinging strip, a copy retaining mem ber secured on one end of and extended at right angles to said post whereby it may be swung in a complete circle in a plane parallel with said attaching member, and a joint intermediate the length of said post whereby it may be flexed and thereby the copy retaining member be inclined at a desired angle.

3. In combination with a type-writer having a lateral projection, a fixed member adapted to be clamped on said projection and extended in a horizontal plane there from, a second member mounted on the free end of the first named member and adapted to swing in a plane parallel therewith, a

vertical post rotatably mounted on the second named member, a rectilinear strip rigidly secured on the upper end of said post and extended at right angles therefrom, a second strip rigidly attached to said first named strip and extending in spaced relationship therewith.

4. In combination with a type-Writer having a lateral projection a spaced copy-holder comprising a main member consisting of a pair of spaced parallel strips having oppositely disposed recesses adapted to fit about said projection, means whereby said strips may be clamped on said projection and ex tended therefrom in a horizontal plane, a swinging member mounted between the outer ends of said strips and adapted to swing in a plane parallel therewith, a post erected on the outer end of said swinging member and rotatable about a vertical axis, a copy holding strip secured on the upper end of and extended at right angles from said post, a tension bar rigidly attached to said copy holding strip in proximity to the rear end thereof and extending therewith in spaced relationship thereto, and a joint intermediate the length of said post, the arrangement being such that the copy holding strip may be turned through a complete circle with said post on the vertical axis thereof and may be moved on the horizontal axis of said joint to any inclination between a horizontal and vertical position.
