HAT-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 260,160, dated June 27, 1882.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN H. BURNS, of Springfield, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to a means for holding a hat or cap in ach urch, theater, or other public place where it is necessary for a man to remove his hat; and to this end the invention consists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate cor responding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a front view of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.

The clip is composed of two plates, A A, each of which is provided with two perforated lugs, a a, at opposite edges, turned inward at right angles to the surface of the plate. Through these lugs passes a pin, b, which forms the pivot or center of oscillation of the plates.

- the ends of which bear against the inner surfaces of said plates above the pivot, so as to press the upper portions of the plates outward or away from each other. It holds a hat or cap securely in place and out of the way of the wearer when notin use; and by means of the plate-pivot and hinge-pivot at right angles to each other a universal motion is allowed to the clip, so that it will always hang vertically.

The clip may also be used for holding other articles besides head-wear-as, for example, a programme or other paper.

The bar E may have an offset above the hinge, connecting it with the plate A, to allow the device to swing clear of screw-heads in the plate G.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination, with the fastening-plate G, of the plates A, provided with the perforated lugsa at opposite edges, the pin b, the spring d, and the bar E, hinged to the upper edge of one of the plates A, and pivoted to the plate G by a pivot at right angles to the hingepivot, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
