To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RnINHoLo KRUMMING, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, have invented a Cover-Holder for Books, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for holding books in open position without manual assistance, and particularly those books which are thick, narrow or stiff-backed and tend strongly to close up of their own accord.
The invention has particular relation to books such as trade-catalogues and other loose-leaf books which are used by solicitors and commercial travelers to set their wares before prospective customers. Such books are made with clamping-bars at the back for securing the leaves together and the leaves cannot therefore open flat as in an ordinary book, the inside edges thereof being held to gether in parallel relation at all times.
The invention consists in general in providing means, which may be separate, or combined into a single bar, and are pivoted upon a member which is secured to the book; said means being adapted to lie at right angles to the axis. of the back upon the table or desk and thereby hold the book upright, so that the back has no tendency to fall over to one side or the other, which action results in causing that side which is uppermost to shut.
In the more improved forms of my invention, I provide a detachable member which engages the back of the book and upon which the pivoted means are mounted. Moreover I may provide such detachable member with a certain adjustability whereby it is adapted to fit books of various sizes.
My invention will best be understood from a description of a few of the concrete forms which it may assume and which are shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein,

The holder shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive comprises an adjustable base-memberA, the same being in two parts a and of, which are connected together by means of a fiatheaded clamping-screw a at a point near the end ofmember a which runs in a slot a in the member a while the extreme end of the member a is pressed up in the center to form a short rib a which enters the slot 04 and thus forms a guide to hold the members a and a in line. screw (4 the member a may be shifted and secured in any desired position corresponding to the length of the book. pivoted upon a rivet c and provided at its ends with rubber-pads or cushions 0 It will be understood of course that when the member a is pushed in farther than the position shown in the drawing, the correspond ing end of the bar C will be slightly lifted to enable the member a to slide under, the same as the rubber cushion a on the lefthand end as shown in Fig. 4.
When the book is not in use the bar C is kept folded up and superposed upon the member A, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, but when the book is to be opened and laid on the table, the bar C is turned into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. the ends of the bar upon opposite sides of the pivot constituting a support for the book as shown in Fig. 2, holding the latter rigidly upright and thus preventing the book from falling on one side or the other. Being so held the leaves themselves have not sufficient resiliency to rise or to turn over from one side to the other.
A simpler form of the device is shown in Figs. 6 to 8 inclusive, this consisting of a sheet-metal plate D bent into a U-shaped form and having a bar pivoted upon a rivet c on one limb cl of the loop, while the other member (Z is adapted to engage over the edge of one of the angular. clamping-bars of a book with telescoping back, as clearly shown in Fig. 8. This formof holder operates in the same manner as the other, the bar E corresponding to the bar 0' and being turned either at right angles or parallel to the back, according to whether in use or not. The ends of the bar E thus constitute supporting means. This form is of course useful only in the caseof 'telescoping backs, but the form of Fig. 1 can be used with any kind of book.
In F ig. 9 is shown a form in which' the pivoted bar is made in the formbftwo wings permanently pivoted upon rivets f to the back 9 ofa book G. Itwill be clear that when opened as shown in Fig. 9 these wings will perform the same function as V the cross-bar C in Fig. 2, and when closed they are out of the way so that. the book can be conveniently transported.
While I have hereinabove shown the most improved form of my invention, I wish it understood that not all of the features are essential thereto or necessarily made in the exact form shown,but various changes and modifications in the constructions as herein shown may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I wish it understood therefore that the latter is not I adapted to engage over the ends of a book back from the outside, and means pivotally mounted on said bar extendible on bot-h sides thereof.
3. A device for holding books in open position comprising, in combination, a basemember made in two parts, one of which has a sliding motion with respect to the other, means for clamping said parts together, each of said members having a hook on the end thereof adapted to engage the ends of the back of a book, and means pivotally mounted on said member extendible on both sides thereof.
4. A device for holding books in open position comprising, in combination, a member made in two parts connected by a slot in one part and a clamping-screw in the other running in said slot whereby one of said parts may have a longitudinal adjustment with respect to the other, each of said bars having a hook formed on its free end which is adapted to engage over the back of a book, and means pivotally mounted on said member extendible on both sides thereof.

A device for holding books in open position comprising, ,in combination, two members, one of which 1s mounted on the back of the book and the other pivotally mounted on it and adapted to turn at a f posit-ion at right angles to it to extend later-. v ally, and bosses projectingat an angle from the ends thereof upon the underside for raising said member off of its support.
7. A device or holding books in open position, comprising a member 1n two parts having at their respective ends means for detachably connecting the same with the ends of a book back and a member pivotally mounted on and movable with one of said parts and movable into a plane at right angles to the length of the book to extend laterally on both sides of the first-named member to form a support for the book.
8. A device for holding books in position, comprising a member having one portion bent double over the other portion leaving I a narrow open space between them adapted to fit over the back edge of a book, and a second member pivotally mounted on the first to turn in a plane parallel to the plane of the back and to extend on both sides of the first-named member to form means to support the book upon opposite sides of said back. f
