To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WrLLrAM WrroLToN, a citizen of Canada, residing at Hamilton, in the county of TWentworth and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented' a new and useful Music Holder, Folder, and Stand, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in a music holder, folder, and stand, in which two outer covers hinged together are arranged and devised to hold music-books in proper position, and to assist in folding or turning consecutively the several leaves of said book and retaining them in position.

The Objects of my invention are to provide a music-holder that shall be capable of holding music-books, having either soft or stiff covers, in position, and that will allow the leaves to be turned over consecutively in a proper manner; second, to afford facilities for the proper, firm and complete adjustment of the music-holder to a stand, and, third, to enable the holder to hold a large quantity of paper-covered music-books, to fold the same together for convenience of holding the same intact, and for portability, I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a face elevation of the device as seen in vertical position and opened out to its full extent without the music, showing the central, vertical and adjustable rod, on the ends of which are pivoted the series of bent rods, each said rod being capable of insertion between each two leaves of the musicbook, and the two vertical and adjustable outer rods which retain the covers and leaves of the music in position against the face of the two spring inner covers of the device. Fig. 2 is an enlarged face view of the righthand half of Fig. 1, broken, the spring inner covers and the series of bent rods being removed in order to show more fully the constructive features of the device, the righthand adjustable rod being adjusted to a different position to those shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan of Fig. 2. Fig. Ll is a side elevation of an adjustable attachment for a stand, having round bent ends and capable of being attached to the rear and middle part of the music-holder at the upper and lower rounded edges, between the hinges thereof, where the cover is flexible and is shown at an angle generally7 used when reading music. This device is for the attachment of a music-stand. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the upper part of the detached music-stand, which fits into the lower rear part of the attached plate and secured thereto. Fig. 6 is a rear view of the upper bent part of Fig. 4., showing vertical slot. Fig. 7 is a rear view of the lower and rear slide also of Fig. 4., and which secures the vertical stand in position. Fig. 8 is a face view of the centrally-located upper and lower edge piece of the holder, and to which are hinged the horizontal border-plates which are secured to the inside of the upper and lower borders of the outer covers of the musicholder, the hinged end of said border-plates being shown broken in this ligure.

Similar letters and numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

The stiff covers of this music holder and folder are indicated by a, and the two inner spring-covers by Z). These covers hinge on their iieXible and vertical lines b' and are riveted at 2 to the central vertical plate c, which is folded over near to each end, as at 3,- and then bent out at right angles to form the projection 4. Between these foldings 3 of this plate cis riveted at 5 the upper and lower short piece d, to the ends of which are hinged the horizontal upper and lower border-plates e, the outer ends of which are folded to the rear against the outer cover and riveted thereto at 6, and the short plates f, the inner ends of which butt against the said plate c when the music-holder is opened out to its full extent and are riveted to the plates e and the cover a at 7. In rear of these borderplates e are openings formed between the face of cover a and the rear of the plates to allow the pivotal arm-supports h to slide between the stops 8 and 9, this wide range being important to suit different sizes of books. Pivoted at l0 to these pivotal arm-supports are the arms t, to which are secured the rods j, the function of these rods being to hold the said inner spring-covers b and also the covers and leaves of covered or sheet music in adjusted position. The function of the springs k, the inner ends of which are secured to the face of the cover a, is to press against the rear of the inner covers, b,when supplied with IOO music-sheets in order to press the same against the rear side of said rodsj, thus retainingthe sheets of music in position.

The manner of inserting the books or sheets of music in position in the music-holder is: Open the book to desired page, draw the central rod, m, in slots 12 of said projections a forward and insert the middle of the book to the middle of the music-holder on the inner spring-covers, Z). At this time the said covers l) are held by their rods j. Then insert the longest of the series of the bent rods n. between the leaves containing the music wanted, and so on to the end of the series of rods, ending with the shortest rod. These rods being in position between their respective leaves, the rods j are then adjusted in position on the music.

It will be perceptible that on account of the different positions in which the rods j may be adjusted provision is made for either light or heavy books of music; and in respect also of the adjustment of the central rod, m, in its slots l2 to suit almost any thickness of book, this, in conjunction with the adjustable rods j, forms a very important element in my invention. The ends of this central rod, m, between the projections -i and the nuts 13, are the pivotal centers of the said bent rods n, a greater quantity of which may be used if deemed necessary.

Vhen the music-book is in position in the music-holder it rests upon the spring-covers Z) and upon the lower central projection et, the distance between these upper and lower projections being sufficient to accommodate books of music. It will be obvious that in manipulating the bent rods n, as before mentioned, the edges of the leaves of music will not be interfered with, this being an important feature; also, by the fact of each bent rod being constructed of very light springwire, the reading of the music will not be materially affected.

In order to exert an even pressure against the rear and outer surface of each springback D, their springs 7i: will be constructed precisely of the same design as the bent :rods n, the fastened ends of these springs being of the ordinary coil pattern.

In folding this music-holder for portable purposes, the two rodsj are slid outward until their sliding supports 7b engage with the stops 9, and the said rods adjusted outwardlyT to answer ashandles. lVhen the covers on their hinged plates are brought approxin'iately close, the square and level ends of these armsupports and the square and level ends of the fastening-supports 0 and p are brought together and fastened by means of a catch o', having opening to fit onto the pin 15, which between the jaws of its support p. Thus it will be obvious that on account of these adjustable arm and fastening supports projecting out and being opposite and in perfect line with each other when the music-book holder is closed a large space is :formed in ils interior to hold a bool; or quantity of sheetsI of music.

This music holder and folder is adapted for pianos, organs, or stands, and especially for open-air performances, an imjjiortant feature in the latter being the provision made to counteract the disturbing of the leaves ol music by the action of the wind.

In order to attach this music-holder to a stand, a device is used consisting of an elongated plate s, provided with a rigid lower bent hook, and an upper adjustable slidinghoolc, fu. These hooks clip over and onto the outer folded part 3 of the central plate, c, of the music-holder, the upper hook being adjusted by means of its slot 1G, outer rigid guide-philo, 17, having guide-pins 1S, which act as stops to said sliding hook, and are fastened to the plate s and its lifting projection 19.

The lower end of plate flu acts as a stop on the lifter 19, to retain the hook u in position.

To detach this music-holder from the standattachment device, the upper part of the spring-plate i. is pressed outward in an opening formed in lifter 19 of the lower part of hook u, and the said hook is lifted up by means of its said lifter 19, thus releasing the music-holder. The lower end of this springplate v is secured to the plate s, having' a piece n: between, thus forming a rigid lip 7/, under which is inserted the upper side flanged plate of the music-stand shown in Fig. The face of this plate of stand is denoted 20, and the side flanges 21, and when inserted the lower slide 22, having slot 23, is adjusted, the upper inner face engaging with the lower part of the plate 2O of stand and locking the same. The lower guide-plate, 2l, having guide-pins 25, acts in a similar manner as the upper guide-plate, their purposes being the same. These two upper and lower adjustable sliding plates having slots are seen very clearly in Figs. G and 7 of the drawings.

It is here necessary to mention that when folding orturning over each sheet of music by means of the bent rods n, and at the same operation, a slight press down presses the sheet underneath the left-hand rodj, which is adjusted to cover only the blank margin of the page.

That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a music holder and folder, the combination of the outer covers, CL, the inner horizontal border-plates, e, secured thereto, said plates formed with their outer folded ends secured to said covers by rivets G, 'the inner plates, j", the stops S and 9, the upper and lower plates,d,arranged to hinge tothe plates, e, the central vertical plate, c, the slotted p rojeetions, 4, the adjustable central rod, on, the bent rods, n, the rods, j, the arms, i', and the sliding supports, 7L, substantially as described.
