WILLIAM I. PITT, OF INDEPENDENCE MISSOURI, ASSIG-NOB TO IRVING- PITT MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, CORPORATION OF MISSOURI.
BOOK-COVER ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIA P. Pi'r'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Independence, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Cover Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in loose leaf books.
The object of my invention is to provide a loose leaf book which may be readily converted into a convenient copy holder.
In carrying my invention into effect I provide a loose leaf book with covers that may be positioned to form legs for supporting the book in the open position, means being provided for releasably holding the covers so positioned.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 illustrates, in perspective, the preferred form of my invention, the parts being arranged to form a copy holder. Fig. 2 is an end view of the book shown in Fig. 1, the covers and brace being in the closed position. Fig. 3 is a fragmental view, partially in elevation and partially in vertical section, of thebrace and covers, the covers being in the folded back position. Fig. 4 is a cross section on the dotted line ab of Fig. 3, the brace being shown extended. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4, the brace being shown folded upon the inner side of the cover to which it is hinged. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of my invention,
the covers being shown in the folded back position. Fig. 7 is an end view of the book shown in Fig. 6, the book being shown with the covers in the closed position.
Similar characters of reference denote similar parts.
1 and 2 denote the covers of the book, which are preferably hinged to the back 3 so as to be swung backward to an inverted V-shape-d position, in which position the covers will form legs to support the book in open position. The book is provided with means for detachably supporting loose leaves, such means comprising preferably cooperating ring hooks 4, mounted on the back 3 in any ordinary manner which will permit the cooperating hooks to separate so as Specification of Letters Patent.
to remove or insert detachable leaves 5. Releasable means are provided for retaining the covers 1 and 2 in the positions in which they will form legs.
In the form of my invention shown in Figs. 1 to 5, I provide a brace which is hinged to the cover 1 at two points located at different distances from the back 3, the brace having means for detachably engaging the opposite cover. Preferably, the brace is made of wire and has two diverging arms (3 and 7, which at their outer ends are turned at an angle and are hinged in plates 8 and 9, which are mounted in the cover 1. In the cover 2 is mounted an eyelet 10 into which is adapted to be inserted .the wire brace, the arms 6 and 7 of said brace being resilient and compressible toward each other suiticiently to permit the passage through the eyelet 10 of a projection 11 on one of the arms. IVhen the arms 6 and 7 have been inserted in the eyelet 10 they will expand and the projection 11 will releasably hold them engaged with the eyelet 10. ith a little force, however, the arms 6 and 7 ma be withdrawn from the eyelet 10, afte which the book may be closed. The wire brace is preferably arranged so that it may be swung parallel to and at the inner side of the cover to which it is attached, as shown in Fig. 2, thereby not interfering with the outside appearance of the book.
In the form of my invention shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the cover 1 has swinging from its outer edge a brace 12, preferably of cardboard, and provided at its free end With a lateral transversely extending flange 13 which is adapted to engage and hold the cover 2 when the covers are swung backward to the inverted V-shaped position shown in Fig. 6. In this position the brace 12 serves also to support the covers as well as to retain them in the folded back position. It will be noted that the back 3, in the form shownin Figs. 6 and 7, is located between the covers 1 and 2 in a position such that the covers must be sprung toward each other to enable the cover 2 to engage the flange 13. Preferably, either the covers or the back 3, or both, may be sufliciently resilient to effect this function. By means of this construction the cover 2 will be more firmly held by the flange 13 than would be the case if the cover 2 swung freely to a position Patented Feb. 20, 1912. Application filed November 20, 1909. Serial No. 529,043.
I I Lora-me engaging said flange. Preferably, the brace 12 is arranged so as to .be swung parallel to and at the inner side of the cover 1, as
shown in F I do not fiimit my invention to the constructionsshown and described, as various modifications of-m invention, within the see e of the appen ed claims, may be made wit out departing from its spirit.
Hav' thus described my invention, what I c aim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A loose leaf book provided with covers which may be positioned to form legs to support the book in open position, one cover aving an eyelet extending therethrough. and a brace carried by the other cover and adapted to enter and releasably enga e said eyelet to hold the covers so positioned.
2. A loose leaf book provided with covers which may be swung backward to an inverted V-shaped position, one cover having an eyelet extending therethrough, and a brace hinged to the other 'cover and having a spring catch insertible through and compressible by said eyelet for releaSabIy-engaging said eyelet.
3. A loose leaf book provided with covers which may be swung backward to an inverted V-sha e osition, one cover having an eyelet, an a race having two diverging arms hinged to the other cover along one sideedge thereofyt-he brace being. adapted to enter and releasably engage said eyelet.
4. A loose leaf book provided with covers which may be strong backward to an inverted .V-shape position, and a brace hin ed to one cover and having its axis paralle with one sideedge thereof, and provided with means for releasably engagin the other cover to hold the covers in the inverted V shalpe position. I
5. loose leaf book provided with covers which ma be swung backward to an in verte'd V-s ape'position, and a brace hinged to one cover and havin its axis parallel with one side edge thereot and having means for engaging the othercover to hold the covers 111 the inverted ll-shape position, the brace being capable of being swung parallel to and at the inner side of the cover towhich it is hinged, and in the latter position not interfering with the closing of the covers.
6. A loose leaf book having covers which maybe positioned to form legs to support the book in the open position, and a wire brace having resilient diverging arms hinged to one cover, the other cover having an eyelet into which .said arms when compressed toward each other'may be inserted to hold the covers releasably so positioned.
