Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kenton, in the county of Hardin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Temporary Binder, of which the following is a specification.

It is the object of the present invention to provide a temporary binder or record book which will be particularly useful to clerks engaged in recording legal instruments and the like, and the invention aims to provide a binder in book form in which a temporary record may be kept and from which such record may be transferred to a permanent binding when desired.

The invention further aims to provide a temporary binder of such construction that the employment of a complicated and expensive book-typewriter will be obviated and an ordinary typewriter with a long carriage may be equally as well employed.

The invention aims further to provide a novel means for holding a number of record sections (comprising each a number of folded leaves) firmly in place in the binder in such a manner that they may be readily referred to but may not be readily removed and the invention contemplates further the provision of means for holding, upon one of the cover leaves of the binder, the leaves comprising the record section which is then being made, this record section being transferred to the holding devices of the binder when all the leaves thereof have become filled and being intended to take the place of another blank record section which is removed from such holding means and is placed in position upon the cover leaf.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawings in whioh,-

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a temporary binder constructed in accordance with the present invention, the same being shown in open position and disclosing to view the inner face of one of the cover leaves of the binder; Fig. 2 is a bottom end view of the binder in open position, a part being removed; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken transversely across the binder; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4l4 of Fig. 3.

In the drawings, the cover leaves of the binder are indicated by the numeral 5 and are connected at their inner edges by a flexible or semi-flexible web 6 similar to the back of an ordinary book. Disposed within the concavity of this web 6 is a solid block or backing 7 preferably of wood and having its outer side convexed as at 8. The web 6 is glued or otherwise secured to the outer side of this block or backing and is thus made to conform to the shape of the back of an ordinary book. Secured to the backing 7 at its upper end is a plate 9 which projects slightly beyond the inner face of the said backing and is formed with a number of openings indicated by the numeral 10. A similar plate 11 is secured to the backing at the lower end thereof and is similarly formed with a number of openings 12, and hinged to the last mentioned plate at its rear end or edge is a plate 13 which is adapted to be swung to the position shown in Fig. 4: of the drawings or in a position at or nearly at right angles to the plate 11. The hinge for connecting the two plates is embodied in the plates themselves, as indicated by the numeral 14. A number of rods 15 are formed each at its lower end with an eye or head 16 and these rods are inserted first through the openings 12 and then at their upper ends through the openings 10, their eyes or heads 16 resting against the under face of the plate 11. After the rods have been so disposed and certain record sections have been placed thereon in a manner which will presently be explained, the plate 13 is swung upon its hinge 14: so as to assume substantially the position shown in Fig. 4: of the drawings, in which position a staple 17 at the lower end of the backing 7 will project through a slot 18 formed in the said plate 13 and the bail of a padlock 19 is then engaged through the staple whereby to lock the plate in this position. When the plate is so positioned and held, the rods 15 may not be removed from the openings in the plates 9 and 11 as will be readily understood although they may be readily so removed,

when the lock 19 is disengaged from the staple 17 and the plate 13 is swung away from the plate 11.

As illustrated in the drawings and as heretofore stated, each of the record sections is made up of a number of blank sheets which however, may be ruled as desired and numbered consecutively if found necessary or desirable, and these sheets are rather wide so that they may be folded vertically medially in the manner illustrated in the drawings, and after being so folded, one section is engaged at its fold with each of the rods 15 and is in this manner firmly held in place in the binder. It has been heretofore stated that one of the sections is to be carried upon one of the cover leaves of the binder in position for convenient removal and replacement and it is also to be observed that it is upon this latter section that the then existing record is to be made. After all of the leaves of this section have been filled or they have been partly filled in any convenient manner, a blank section is removed from one of the rods 15 and the completed or filled record section above mentioned is disposed upon the rod in place thereof whereupon the rods are again locked in the position shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The blank section thus removed and replaced is then disposed upon the cover leaf and becomes the section upon which the then existing record 'is to be written, this method of procedure being repeated until all of the record sections in the binder have become filled whereupon all of the said sections are moved and are bound into book form or inserted in a permanent binder of any desired character.

As a means for holding one of the blank record sections upon the inner face of one cover leaf of the binder, there is provided a device which will be specifically described. This device is formed from a single strand of resilient wire which is bent at points to each side of its middle as at 20 to afford a connecting portion 21 and portions 22 extending at right angles inwardly from the connecting portion. From the portion 22, the wire is bent to afford portions 23 extending at right angles thereto and of such lengths that their extremities will terminate at the upper and lower edges of the said cover leaf. At these points, the wire is bent upon its portions 23 as at 2 1 and thence at right angles outwardly as at 25. The de vice is applied to one cover leaf of the binder (preferably the front cover leaf) with the portions 20, 21, 22 and 23 hearing against the inner face of the said leaf and the portions 24 and 25 bearing against the outer face of the leaf and the first mentioned and last mentioned preferably have a normal tendency to spring toward each other, as a whole, whereby the device will firmly grip the cover leaf. After having been so applied,

a blank record section, comprising a number of blank leaves as heretofore stat-ed, may be disposed beneath the portions 20, 21, 22 and 23 and between the said portions and the inner face of the cover leaf in which position they will be firmly held although they may be readily removed for the purpose of writing a record thereon.

From the foregoing description of the invention it will be seen that there is provided a temporary binder which will be extremely useful in the recording of records and legal instruments and which is so constructed that the leaves or record sections thereof may be readily removed and replaced and which is further so constructed that the employment of a book-typewriter will not be necessary.

What is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a cover member, a plate at the upper end of the member, a plate fixed at the lower end of the member, a plate hinged to the last mentioned plate, the two first mentioned plates being formed with alined openings, rods inserted through the openings and having headed ends bearing against the under side of the second mentioned plate, and means for holding the hinged plate in folded position against the second mentioned plate.

In a device of the class described, a cover member, a backing fixed in the member, a plate fixed at the upper end of the backing and formed with a number of openings, a plate fixed at the lower end of the backing and formed also with a number of openings alining with the openings in the plate at the upper end of the backing, a plate hinged to the last mentioned plate, a number of rods inserted through the alined openings of the two first mentioned plates,
