J. H. HUGH. REFERENCE GUIDE FOR BOOKS.
Patented Aug. 4, 1896.
J rnes J[. Inch.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE A JAMES H. HOCH, OF MARION, KANSAS.
REFERENCE-GUIDE FOR BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 565,354, dated August 4, 1896. Application filed March 2, 1896. Serial No. 581,455. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES H. 110011, of Marion, in the county of Marion and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reference-Guides for Books, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is designed to provide for the use of preachers, lawyers, teachers, and others a device to be applied to books for the purpose of enabling the user to conveniently and quickly refer to various texts, selections, or passages in the volume, and which I call a reference-guide.
It consists of a simple attachment to be detachably applied to the book and having tablets or markers to be inserted between the pages which are carried upon swinging arms mounted on an articulated frame-bar, which latter is applied to the backs or covers of the book at their lower edges by means of springclasps, the articulation of the frame in the middle enabling the frame to open or close and adjust itself automatically to the open or closed condition of the book, as will be hereinafter fully described.
Figure l is a perspective view of the referenceguide shown applied to the book when the latter is in an opened position. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same shown applied to the book when the latter is folded and closed, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective View of the frame-bar for holding the tablet or markers.
In the drawings, A A represent the two sections of the frame-bar, which are jointed together in the middle at Z) with a knuckle-joint adapted to fold in a reverse direction to the book. In each bar is a series of swivelingstems B and B, which carry a corresponding set of radial arms 0 O, which at their outer ends have small metal plates 0 c, riveted to a corresponding set of tablets or marker-slips D D, preferably made of ivory, celluloid, cardboard, or other material capable of lying flat between the leaves and receiving, where they project below the pages of the book, penciled memoranda or references, the tablet for this purpose being so prepared that the penciled memoranda may be easily written thereon and erased when desired. The stems B and B are detachably retained in their bearings in the frame-bars A A by thin lockingbars a a, which are jointed together about the same axis 1) as the frame-bars, and the edges of which locking-bars pass into transverse grooves or beneath the heads formed on the tops of the swiveling stems B B. lThese locking bars are held to place by springs a a which may be forced back with the locking-bars to permit the swivelingstems to be inserted into or removed from their bearings in the frame-bars.
To the ends of the frame-bars are hinged about axes parallel with those of the swiveling stems spring-clasps E E of well-known construction, which are adapted to be squeezed at one end to open the jaws at the other, and which are intended to be applied to and to bite the lower edges of the book backs or covers, so as to hold the attachment to the book. These spring-clasps may be quickly applied and loosened to permit of attachment to other books.
The swiveling stems on one side of the middle joint are somewhat longer than those on the other side, so that the radial arms on one side will pass those on the other side without interference.
WVhen the book is open, as in Fig. 1, the frame-bars A A occupy a position nearly straight or in alinement, as shown in Fig. 1, but when the book is closed these frame-bars fold and their inner or hinged ends are proj ected outwardly toward the free edges of the leaves, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A reference guide or marker for books comprising a pair of articulated frame-bars with clasp attachments for securing them to the edges of the book-backs, and radial marker-arms, the frame-bars being articulated to fold in an opposite direction to the book sub stantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A reference guide or marker for books, comprising a pair of articulated frame-bars with clasp attachments for securing them to the edges of the book-backs and radial marker-arms bearing tablets, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. A reference guide or marker for books, comprising a pair of articulated frame-bars with clasp attachments for securing them to the edges of the book-backs, and swiveling stems arranged in the frame-bars and pr0- vided with radial marker-arms substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. A reference guide or marker for books, comprising a pair of articulated frame-bars with clasp attachments for securing them to the edges of the book-backs, swiveling stems arranged in the frame-hars and bearing radial marker-arms, and spring-seated locking [0 bars for detachably holding the swivelingstems in the frame-bars substantially as shown and described.
