COPY-HOLDER SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 627,132, dated June 20, 1899.
Application filed December 28, 1897. Serial No. 664,104. (No Inodel" To all whowt t may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN I-I. MCBRIDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvementsin Copy-Holders, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The subject of this invention is a copyholder adapted more especially for holding examples of penmanship for the use of pupils in schools.
The object of the invention is to provide an economical device in which the copies can be stored and also readily exhibited.
Theinvention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and specifically claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompany ing drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view'of` an embodiment of this invention. Fig. 2 is a detail transverse sectional view taken on the line 2 2, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional View,on a longitudinal plane, taken on the line 3 3, Fig. 2.
In accordance with the principle involved by this invention I make a copy-holding device comprising an outer and inner member, the latter serving as a receptacle and base upon which to exhibit the copy and the former furnishing a closure for the receptacle and means for holding the copyin position on the inner member. It is understood that the shape of the members can vary, although in the drawingsthey are shown as triangular, which form is found convenient and possesses many advantages. I have also shown the members sliding longitudinally, although it is understood that the members can be placed together or separated laterally.
In the drawings, l indicates the inner member or base, which is hollow and open at one end. The outer member or casing 2 is also hollow and open; at one end, and the base fits nicely therein. In the open end of the base a slot 3n is formed by a strip 3, fastened at its ends and extending parallel with one side thereof. The side of the casing corresponding to the side of the base having the slot is open or cut away, as shown at 4.
The examples of penmanship or anything else to be copied are placed upon strips 5,
that can be stored within the base when not In usethe members are separated,
In IISG. and the end portion of a strip is inserted Within the slot within the base and the strip placed iiat upon the'outer face of the base. The casing is then passed over the base, with its open side over the strip, as shown. The device is placed upon the desk and holds the copy at a convenientangle, while other strips may be readily substituted, as will be obvious.
As before stated, the members may be latv erally separable instead of longitudinally, and the shape of the parts can be'otherwise than triangular, while the exact construction of the base to provide a receptacle as well as means for holding one end of the copy-strip can be variously modified.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Vl. A copy-holder, comprising an inner hollow member open at one end and closed at the other, and adapted to receive copy-strips Within the same, and an outer member open at one end and into which the open end of the inner member is adapted to be inserted, said inner member being provided with a fiat under surface, and an upwardly-inclined side or display-surface adapted to receive a copy-strip thereon, and said inner member being also provided at one end thereof with means for holding one end of the copy-strip, and the outer member being also adapted to hold said strip on the display-surface of the inner member, the front of said outer member being also open, substantially as shown and described.
2. The herein-described device for exhibiting copies, comprising an outer casing or re- Y ceiver which is open at one end and provided in one side with a longitudinal slot or' opening and an inner holder which is adapted to be inserted into the open end of said outer casing or receiver, said holder being open at the end thereof which is adapted to be inserted into the receiver or casing and provided IOO with an attaching device whereby Lhe end of a copy-slip may be connected therewith, said easing or receiver and said holder being each triangular in cross-section, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 14th day of December, 1897.
JOHN H. MCBRIDE.
