To all whom (it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Greece LEONARD Gon'rz, a citizen of ,t e United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Booklet-Covers, of which the following is a spec' cation.
The object of the present invention is to provide a. cover device which may be previouslyprepared incomplete form and will be self applying to a flat-opening multiple pagebooklet insert, and adapted to hold the latter in position with the individual leaves free tohinge upon a single axis which substantially coincident with the hinging axis of the covers and Without obscuring any of the reading surface on the exterior pages of the insert; and the invention consists" essentially in a cover device comprising a pair of covers suitably related to hinge one upon the other, and carrying a binding attachment comprising a single strip of material having along its medial line a single line hinging connection, with the covers in ooincidence with the hinge of the covers and in a manner to present, on opposite sides of the hinge line, a pair of "integral free margins providing a space sntlicient to admit the insert to be held, with the inner edges of its pages upon which they hinge substantially coincident with the hingi'ng axes of the binding attachment and cover, and with an adhesive on the opposed faces of the margins of thebinding attachment in position to develop adhesion along the outer faces of the inner margin of the insert without obscuring any of the reading area of the outer faces of'the latter. 7
The present invention, which afl 'ordsan effective means for realizing these results, consists essentially in a cover device comprising a pair of covers suitably related so that they will hinge one upon the other, and a combined binding and gathering. attachment secured along its middle line to the fold line ofithe covers so as to make a single line attachment thereto and presenting narrow free edges for receiving and adhering to the aok marginal portions of the two outer pages of the insert to be bound, and leaving a space between said freeedges for receiving and holding said insert in a manner to leave its several pages free to be turned upon a single line aids approximately coincident \v thfhe single line hinging axis of the binding attachment, and thereby adapted to be individually displayed like the leaves of a book.
The invention will be fully understood upon referring to the accompanying drawings, in yvhieh- ,Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cover device embodying the features of the pres out invention, the adhesive applied to the frec edges of the bindingand gathering attachment being uponthe inner opposed faces thereof;
Fig. 2 is a similar view in which two bindand gathering attachments are used, the hesive being ap lied to the opposing faces of thebinding an gathering attachments;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view illustrating the device of Fig. 1 with an insert applied in the manner to leave a plurality of intervening leaves;
1 shows the device of Fig. 3 folded or closed;
Fig. 5 is a. perspective view showing the device of .Fig. 1 with another ,form of folder therein;
Fig. 6 shows the arrangement of Fig. 5 in open or full display position; and
Fig. 7 is a view showing a folder of a somewhat different form attached to the cover device of Fig. 2 and with the series of folds secured at one end only so as to adapt it to open out as a continuous strip, Fig. 8 showing the same open.
'1 represents the cover device, consisting of a pairof covers hinged together so that they may fold one upon the other upon opposite side's ofa filler or insert to which they are to be applied. This cover device has permanently attached to it a binding and gathering attachment 2, which is secured along its middle line to the folding line of the cover device, as, for instance, by staples 3 or sewing, stitching, or other securing means, in a 111a11ner to provide a single line hinging aitzufilnncnt and leave its edges 1 free, with a gathering space 5 between them; a suitable adhesive (5 being provided on these free edges to adapt them for self-attachment to the outer faces, folds or leaves of an insert or filler to be covered. The adhesive (5 may be upon the inner opposed faces of the attaclnnent :2, as shown in Fig. 1, or it may be upon the opposing faces of two binding and gathering attachments, as suggested in Fig. 2.
One method of using the cover device is suggested in Fig. 3, wherein 7 represents a sheet folded backward and forward upon itself after the manner of an accordeon fold for the purpose of providing leaves 7*, each free to hinge upon the single line of its inner edge as an axis; the insert thus provided being secured to the cover device in position to bring the single line swinging axes of the leaves approximately coincident with the line of stapling of the attaching strip, as, for instance, by moistening the adhesive upon the free edges of the attachment and UtlllSlng the same to adhere to the back edges of the two outside leaves of the insert; both free edges of the attachment being caused to adhere, as shown in Fig. 3, and the intermediate folds which are not attached being gathered and confined in the space 5. If the insert 7 be made of a sheet whose dimension from top to bottom is twice the length of one of the leaves, and folded first to half its vertical dimension before being folded to produce the leaves, the result will be to make, in each leaf, pockets 8 which will serve conveniently for the reception of a sample 9, and if the material of the insert be transparent paper. obviously the sample may be inspected without removing it from the pocket, and, therefore, with minimum wear and tear upon the same.
As suggested in Fig. 4, the device of Fig. 3 may be closed up for convenient handling and shipment, and when so closed presents the neat appearance of a book, and affords ample face upon the cover device for the advertisement of the distributer or such other matter of information which it may be desired to display in addition to that presented by the insert.
If the inserted device as described in Fig. 3 is such as to present but two leaves, as suggested in Fig.5, it is obvious that when the cover device is opened out flat and the two leaves are oppositely extended the sheet may be unfolded in the direction of its length, and thus present on the inner face, as suggested in Fig. 6, a large and ample sheet upon which to print an advertisement in simulation of a personal letter or any other nfitter that a large sheet would render availa 1 e. 4
As shown in Fig. 7, the insert may be at tached by one only of its end folds, leaving the other end fold free so that any desired number of its folds may be extended even to the full extent of the sheet, and the purpose of the invention will be realized, measurably at least and to the extent that the combined binding and gathering attachment serves as the means for retaining the insert, gathering or confining it between the free edges, and serving as a cover device therefor. lVith one edge only of the insert attached, as suggested in Fig. 7, the insert may be of the character shown in Fig. 3 with a plu rality of 2-ply folds, the plies of which are united at one end by the original longitudinal folding of the sheet, and thus the insert of Fig. 7 when the folds are completely ex tended could be opened out still farther by unfolding longitudinally, as shown in Fig. 8. For instance, so long as the lines of adhesive are near the hinge line, tliey will leave the outer faces of the attached folds or sheets free from obstruction even though the at taching strip may extend out ardly beyond the adhesive line.
The foregoing will be sufficient to illustrate the uses to which my invention may be put. Obviously, these uses may be multiplied without departing from the spirit of the invention.
