FOLDER Filed Nov. 24, 1944 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 in f? Zf/YNEHNA/V Patented June 14, 1949 2 ,473,352- FOLDER SoiM. Zimmerman, Detroit, than, enigma Plastikiili Laboratories, Inc., Chicago, 111., a corporation of Illinois Application November 24, 1944, Serial No. 564.99% 2 claims. (01.283 36) The present invention relates to unpr'cveinents in folders, and more particularly to a folder of a kind particularly suited for use an advertising medium and in which its contents fisrhade readily accessiblefor examination.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an inexpensive folder of a kind having a plurality of interconnected pages each provided on a margin with visible means affording ready identification of thecontents and quick selection of the pages.
Another object of" the -.invention is to provide a single sheet, bearing indicia constituting data, with a plurality ofxfold lines deiining individual pages easily and quickly foldable into compact folder form and in which thepagefs are-so constituted as to provide on each'ayisible index or selection portion.
Another object is to provide a novel folder of a kind particularly adapted for use as a color chart, having means'constituting portions of the pages thereof which is visible at .all times and adapted to bear indieia constituting dataper taini'ng to the subject matter" on the individual pages.
Other and further objects of the present invention will be apparent from the following description and claims and are illustrated in the accompanying drawings by way of illustration of a preferred embodiment and the principle thereof and which is considered to be the best mode contemplated for applying that principle. Other embodiments of the invention, embodying the same or equivalent principle may be used and structural changes may be made, as desired, by those skilled in the art, without departing from the present invention and the purview of the appended claims.
In the drawings,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the improved folder in closed position.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the folder partially opened.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the folder showing it partially opened.
Fig. 4 is a view showing the folder fully opened.
The folder of the present invention is particularly constructed to facilitate its use inasmuch as it is provided with novel means whereby a portion of each sheet or page thereof is fully exposed to view, and which is, further, so formed as to be easily and quickly folded compactly, or unfolded so as to expose the entire contents on one face thereof.
As best illustrated in Fig. 4, the folder pref- 2 erabiy is'fashion'ed er a sheet of [material H, such as p per, formed with an irregular outline so as to present a substantially raniike cnton'r. l e sheet when so formed has an inwardly arched b'o't edge 12 and outwardly and upwardly diverging side edges]? and i l. The bottom edge 12 .preferablyis defined y a plurality of relatively short contiguous, st'raight edge portions 15 or uniform length. 'rne body pcrtjicn' f t eshf" it is provided with a pluralityof ifold lines .15, the bottom ends of which terminate at thebottoi'n edge it, one at each juncture betweenthe necting edge portions 15, as at ll. Itsho d be understood at t his time tha't -the fold lines I B may; be indicated on the sheet :in any suitable manner, such as for example, by score lines-or merely by line markings imprinted thereon.
e eld i s d v v .i nw rdlv a the maeh t w ii ef i ene y indicated at l8 to tliereby define a plurality of u tan i l id nt al. pa es. 1 e, op e .8 of the sh eti 'e i i h tqnede sg e nai due pe e g l m ea at ar us. is: tanoes from their respective L ttom edges [afar a purpose to be described hereinafter. Each of the top edges of the pages l9 may be arcuately shaped, as at 2|, to add to the pleasing effect of the folder when folded, although it should be understood that said edges may be straight if desired.
In use, one face of the sheet may be provided with indicia constituting data, such as, for example, the color charts 22, illustrated in Fig. 4, so that when the folder is in fully folded position, said indicia is completely concealed from view. The other face of the sheet may of course bear any such other or similar reading matter or indicia as may be desired.
The sheet is folded into the compact, folder form illustrated in Fig. 1, preferably by initially folding one portion of the sheet inwardly over and against another portion of the sheet along the fold line l6a, as shown in Fig. 3, whereupon the two thicknesses of the sheet are folded jointly along the remaining fold lines IS in the manner shown in Figs. 2 and 3, so as to dispose one page I9 over the other. When thus folded, the remaining page [9a is folded along the fold line 5b to overlie the previously folded pages and thereby provide, in eifect, a cover for the folder. Because of the difference in the lengths of the various pages, the arcuately shaped top edges 2| of the pages are progressively stepped upwardly and rearwardly from the folder cover page 19a so as to expose their marginal areas 23 to View even though the folder is folded. Both faces of these marginal areas bear indicia constituting data such as at 24 useful as an index to the contents of each particular page.
It will therefore be apparent that a very useful folder is provided which may be folded compactly and easily and quickly opened at any Page selected byready reference to the indicia of the exposed marginal areas 23; and that when open said folder will lie in a substantially fiat plane, as distinguished from folders commonly used for this purpose wherein the pages are usually bound along common edges and must be successively referred to.
If desired, means may be provided on the sheet to aid the user in making the initial fold Ilia in the folder. To this end, a gauge mark 25 may be imprinted or otherwise provided on the inside face of the cover portion I90. adjacent to its fold line lBb. A similar gauge mark 26 is provided along the free edge iii of the sheet on the side reverse to that bearing the color chart 22 so that when said sheet is being folded initially, the gauge markings 25 and 26 may be matched to insure proper location of the free edge 13 of the folder with respect to the fold line [61).
It should be understood that, although a particular embodiment of the invention has been selected for illustration herein, the folder may embody forms and shapes other than that shown,
provided, of course, that it be capable of being folded into compact form along a plurality of fold lines 50 arranged on the sheet as to enable said folder to be opened substantially fiat and when folded will enable a marginal portion of each page to be fully exposed to view.
I claim:
1. A folder comprising a sheet of material, a fold line inwardly of a side edge of said sheet defining with said sheet a cover section, a second fold line in the remaining sheet portion substantially midway between the first named fold line and the other side edge of said portion along which said remaining portion of said sheet is adapted to be folded to provide a section of two thicknesses of material, a plurality of fold lines in both of said thicknesses of material dividing said material into pages each having a width substantially equal to the width of the cover section, said pages being adapted to underlie the cover section when the folder is closed, and each of said pages being of such length relative to the cover or page disposed thereover so as to have an end margin exposed.
2. A folder comprising a sheet of material, a fold line inwardly of a side edge of said sheet defining with said sheet a cover section, a second fold line in the remaining sheet portion substantially midway between the first named fold line and the other side edge of said portion along which said remaining portion of said sheet is adapted to be folded to provide a section of two thicknesses of material; a plurality of fold lines in both of said thicknesses of material dividing said material into pages each having a width substantially equal to the width of the cover section, all of said fold lines and both side edges of the sheet converging towards a common end edge of the sheet whereby said pages and the cover section are each narrower at one end than at the other end, said pages being adapted to underlie the cover section when the folder is closed, and each of said pages being of such length relative to the cover or page disposed thereover so as to. have an end margin exposed.
