POCKET SECRETARY Filed April 15, 1957 Pics. 40 FIGQ4 INVENTOR CHAR.L?5 B. WRJGHT wmmw A TTORNEY United States Patent O POCKET. SECRETARY Charles Buford Wright, Kirkwood, Mo.
Application April-15, 1957, Serial No. 652,811
3 Claims. (31. 281-19) This invention relates to improvements in a pocket secretary that is so constructed that it may have a note pad associated therewith and be detachably retained thereby, said secretary provided with means whereby the backing of said pad will be concealed by an element of the secretary while the pad is retained in operative position.
An added object of my invention is to so construct said device that a pocket is provided therein in which an indiciareceiving card is received, the covering of said pocket being of a light-transmitting material so that said card is easily and readily readable while it is in said pocket, and the backing of said note pad being received in said pocket and concealed by said card.
Other objects of this invention are to so construct a device of the kind described that will be neat and attractive in appearance, convenient, economical to make, long-lasting, and which will be otherwise satisfactory and efilcient for use wherever found applicable.
To this end, my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, all as will be more clearly pointed out in the following description and claims.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters represent like or corresponding parts throughout the views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, with the note pad in place therein;
Figure 2 is a similar view, but with the note-pad carrying element moved to overlie the front cover panel;
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view, taken substantially along the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view, taken substantially along the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, there is shown a wallet-type device, and which in this instance is intended to be used as a pocket secretary for taking notes and having several pockets for filing these notes or other writings theren, and being also provided with indicia-receiving cards that are readable without removing them from the device.
It is preferred that this device be made of flexible vinyl plastic sheeting, inasmuch as this material is light in weight, strong, soft and pleasing to the touch, easy to handle in production of the device, and may be readily decorated by printing, painting or embossing thereon.
A substantially rectangular sheet of this material is blanked out to be foldable along a line that is centrally intermediate its terminal side edges, so as to provide the pair of front and back panel covers 2 and 3, respectively. The panel 2 has top and bottom marginal edges 4 and S to form the laterally outermost boundaries, and has a side marginal edge 6, while the other panel cover 3 has similar top and bottom marginal edges 7 and 8, respectively, and with an outermost lateral or side edge 9.
Substantially rectangular flaps and 11 are secured, as by fusing in any suitable manner, say through heat See and pressure, to said covers, said flaps being of substantially the same size and shape as the covers to which they are-attached. The flap 10 is secured along its top and outermost marginal side edges tothe corresponding edges 4, 5 and 6 of one panel, but is unsecured along its laterally inner side edge so asto provide a pocket between said cover and flap, of approximately the same size as the panel. I
There is a similar securement of the flap 11 to the other panel cover, along the marginal edges 7, 8 and 9 to form a similar'pocket thereat. It is to be noted thatv said pair of pockets are mutually laterally opposed and open in opposite directions.
If desired, a smaller pocket may be formed in addition, as by securing a tab 12 along the marginal edges of securement of flap 10 to its adjoined panel, to thereby leave an upper unsecured edge to form a pocket with said panel; 7
A substantially rectangular web element 13 is adjoined along one side edge to one off said flaps, as along the terminalfree edge 9, or itmay be blanked out as part of said flap, so as to project laterally beyond the said flap and provide a fold line 17 whereby said tab may be flattened out to overlie said fiap it or said web may be folded reentrantly so as to be superimposed on the flap 11.
Another sheet of vinyl, also preferably of rectangular shape and having such a characteristic as to be lighttransmitting, either transparent or translucent, is secured to the device so as to bridge laterally across the contiguous faces of the adjoined flap 11 and the web 13, and is secured intermediate its side edges along the material along the fold line 17 and also secured to the panel 11 along the side edges 3 and 9, and to the web along the marginal edges 15 and 16, respectively and along the bottom edge, to thereby provide a pair of side-by-side contiguous pockets 18 and 19 as shown. It is to be noted that these pockets are open across their tops and may be of slightly shorter length than the cover panels.
A card or sheet 2%} may be removably inserted into each of said last-mentioned pockets as indicated, and may have suitable indicia either originally imprinted or written thereon, or may receive such indicia at one or more later periods, and an account of the nature of the sheet light-transmitting vinyl, such indicia is readily visible while the cards are retained within their pockets.
A note pad having a supply of detachable sheets 21 secured to a supporting or backing element 22 may be removably mounted so as to be carried by my device, as by having said pad straddle the free top edge of the web element, so that the sheets 21 overlie said web and so that backing may be inserted into the pocket 18. Obviously, when said backing is so placed beneath said card Ztkthe backing is concealed, which not only adds to the appearance of the device, but permits full and effective use of the indicia that is on the card, Without requiring any displacement of any of the relatively detachable elements.
I claim:
1. A pocket secretary comprising a substantially rectangular flexible sheet folded upon itself intermediate its side edges to provide a front and a rear cover panel, a flap fastened to each of said panels to provide a pair of opposed pockets, a substantially rectangular web foldably secured along the free terminal edge of one of said flaps to be foldably superimposable onto said last-mentioned flap, and a substantially transparent sheet extended across the contiguous web and last-mentioned panel and secured along its bottom and side edges and along said fold line to the corresponding edges of said web and panel to provide a pair of laterally adjoined but separate open-top pockets to' receive indicia cards. therein, and
whereby a note pad having a backing may straddle the top edge of the pocket that is formed by said weband transparent sheet and so that the backing may be received in said last-mentioned pocket to be concealed behind an indicia card inserted in said pocket.-
2. A pocket secretary comprising a substantially rectangular flexible sheet foldable intermediate its'side edges to provide a front and a rear cover panel, a flap fastened to each of said panels along the top, bottom and outer side edges of the latter to provide a pair of oppositely directed opposed pockets, a substantially rectangular flexible web foldably secured to the free terminal edge of one of said flaps whereby said web may be moved to overlie said flap, and a substantially light-transmitting sheet extended across the contiguous adjoined'web and last-mentioned panel and secured along its bottom and side edges and also secured alongsaid juncture line of web and panel to the corresponding edges of said web and panel to provide a pair of laterally contiguous separate pockets open at their tops whereby cards may be inserted into said pair of pockets, and whereby a note pad having a backing may straddle the top edge of said pocket thus formed between said web and light-transmitting sheet, to have said backing in said last-mentioned pocket and be concealed behind the card therein.
3. A pocket secretary comprising a substantially rectangular flexible sheet foldable intermediate its marginal side edges to provide a front and a rear cover panel, a flap fastened to each panel along the top, bottom and the outer side edges of the latter to provide a pair of opposed pockets, a tab of substantially the same width as one of flaps and shorter than the latter and secured to the bottom and side edges of said flap to provide a pocket that is open at its top and one side edge, a substantially rectangular flexible web foldably secured to the free terminal edge of the other flap so as to be reentrantly folded thereover and overlie the latter, and a light-transmitting flexible sheet extended across the contiguous adjoined Web and last-mentioned panel and secured along its bottom and side edges and also secured along said juncture line between said web and panel to provide a pair of laterally contiguous separate pockets open across their tops, whereby cards may be inserted into each of the last-mentioned separate pockets and whereby a note pad may straddle the top edge of the pocket formed by said web and light-transmitting sheet and have the backing of said pad inserted into said last-mentioned pocket to be concealed behind the card in the same pocket.
