This invention relates to improvements in covers or protectors for periodicals, booklets, pamphlets or the like, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive cover which will protect the paper. contents against dust, wear or soilage. Further objects reside in the structural features of the protector hereinafter described and pointed out in the a pended claims.

A recommended embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing whichshow a cover adapted particularly for enclosing a bound periodical. It will be understood, however, that any desired collection of sheets, either bound or loosely assembled may be suitably secured within the protector; and that the size, shape and structural details of the protector may be varied to suit particular purposes. In the drawing:

Fig. 1 is a perspective View of the improved cover in closed position;

Fig. 2 is an enlarged section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 and showing the cover partially opened;

Fig. 3 is a plan view of a blank suitable for making the cover; and

Fig. 4 is a plan view of the opened cover with the contents removed.

The improved cover is preferably made of so cardboard, heavy paper, or other relatively stifi' sheet material and'is preferably formed in one piece from a blank of the material cut as shown in Fig. 3. The blank is folded along parallel lines 6 to provide similar side portions 7 and a back 8, thefold-lines 6 constituting the hinges of the cover and the back portion 8 being sufliciently wide to accommodate the periodical or booklet which is to be fastened therewithin.

The projecting side wings 9 and end Wings 10 of each side portion 7 are folded inwardly on spaced parallel lines to provide outer edge walls 11 and 12 at the sides and ends of the sides 7, and rearwardly inclined portions which are cemented or otherwise fastened to nishing marginal ribs or flanges of substantial thickness and rigidity. Hence the ledges 1 15 and 16 of the respective sides meet each 7 other when the cover is closed over itsbontents, thereby providing and dust proof protector which may be 'quickly opened to permit inspection of the reading matter enclosed therewithin.

The sheets, pamphlets or periodical 17 may be stitched or otherwise secured within the V folding cover in any appropriate arrangement. For example, abound pamphlet may i be fastenedby stitching 18' to a backing strip or reinforcement 19 ,adhesively united to the inner face of the cover back 8. The periph- Q5 cry of the booklet 17 lies within the border formed by the marginal flanges 9 and 10 which close together as aforesaid to protect the contents of the cover from dirt or wear.

From the foregoing it is evident that I1 have provided a compact and eflicient pro-' tector which is easy and economical to manufacture, durable in use, and pleasing in appearance, The outer surfaces of the cover may be ornamented or inscribed as desired 15 in case the cover is to be used repeatedly for a particular periodical; yet it will be apparent that the low cost of the cover permits it to be frequently replaced if necessary.

2. A protective cover for periodicals or the like, comprising back and side portions 6 formed of a single sheet of material, means to secure the periodical to the back portion and the side portions folding relatively to the back toward opposite sides of the periodical, each side portion having its margins 30 folded inwardly to provide upstanding flanges having substantially flat ledges, the

ledges of the respective flanges abutting each other when the sides are folded together,

thereby to enclose the contents of the cover.
