This invention relates to improvements in book protectors and, more especially, a paper book protector formed of a single sheet adapted to be folded over the covers of a book to prevent soiling of the same.

One of the features of my invention is the provision of an extension flap lying over the first fiy-leaf of the book, said extension flap afiording space for the title of the book and advertising matter, and also serving to protect the first fly-leaf against soiling.

Other features and advantages of my invention will appear more fully as I proceed with my specification.

In that form of device embodying the features of my invention shown in the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a book with the protector on it; Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the protector showing the same removed from the book; Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of a portion of the protector showing a part of the flexible hlnge oint between the front flap and the extension flap;

and Fig. 5 is a view in elevation of the forward edge of the book.

As shown in the drawings, 10 indicates the pages of a book and 11 and 12, respectively,

the front and back covers thereof. Numeral 10 indicates the first fly-leaf of the book.

The protector is preferably formed out of a single sheet of paper by folding, and is shown removed from the book in Fig. 2. The

protector includes front and back cover sheets A and B, substantially the same size as the book covers and adapted to be placed over the outer surfaces of the front and back cov- 40 ers 11 and 12 of the book, respectively, to cover and protect the same. The rear edges of these cover sheets are connected by a strip G adapted to lie over the back of the book.

D indicates a back flap attached to the forward edge of the back cover sheet B and adapted to be folded under the back cover 12 of the book when the protector is in place.

E indicates a front flap, substantially the same size as a book cover, attached to the forward edge of the front cover sheet A and adapted to be folded under the front cover of the book when the protector is in place.

F indicates an extension flap attached at 13 to the flap E. The connection at 13 is preferably a flexible hinge joint formed by repeated creasing, heavy dash printing, perforating, or the like. The crease 13 is preferably a weakened connection so' as to give considerable flexibility. The extension flap F is also preferably somewhat smaller than the front flap E and ispreferably the same size as the first fly-leaf 10*, so that it will entirely protect and cover the same.

The extension flap F affords additional space for the title, advertising matter, and so forth, and also protects thefiy-leaf 10 which ordinarily is exposed when a prospective purchaser lifts the front cover of a book lying on a counter. The extension flap F is made somewhat smaller than the flap E. If it were made as large as the flap E, then when anyone opened the front cover of the book, his finger might catch the edge of the extension flap F and open it with the cover. By making it smaller, it will not be lifted up with the cover but will lie flat over the first fly-leaf, thus exposing both the flaps E and F.

These flaps may contain the title, advertising, and all necessary explanatory matter so that ordinarily a prospective purchaser need not open the book further than raising the front cover. The hinge joint 13 should also preferably be sufficiently flexible so that when the cover is lifted, the extension flap F will not come up also but will stay down flat on the first fiy-leaf 10*.

While I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that it is capable of many modifications. Changes, therefore, in the construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claims, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as possible, in view of the prior art.

What I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A paper protector for a book including: front and back cover sheets adapted to be placed over the outer surfaces of the front and back covers of a book to cover the same, with their rear edges connected by a strip adapted to lie over the back of the book; a

back flap attached to the forward edge of the back cover sheet and adapted to be folded under the back cover of the book; a front flap attached to the forward edge of the front cover sheet and adapted to be folded under the front cover of the book; and an extension flap attached to the front flap and adapted to lie over the first fiy-leaf of the book.

2. A paper protector for a book, including: front and back cover sheets adapted to be placed over the outer surfaces of the front and back covers of a book to cover the same, with their rear edges connected by a strip adapted to lie over the back of the book; flaps attached to the edges of the cover sheets and adapted to be folded under the covers of the book; and an extension flap attached to one flap and adapted to be folded back against the same and under the cover of the book.

3. A book protector as claimed in claim 2,

4. A book protector as claimed in claim 2, in which the extension flap is narrower than the flap to which it is attached.

. 5. A book rotector as claimed in claim 2, in which the rec edge of the extension flap is spaced back of the free edge of the cover of the book when the protector is in place.

6. A book protector as claimed in claim 2,

I in which the extension flap is smaller than the flap to which it is attached and substantially the same size as the adjacent fly-leaf of the book.
