ERNEST WALTER JACKSON, OF AUSTIN, TEXAS.
BOOK COVER.
Application filed January 26, 1923.
'1 '0 all to 710m 2'15 may concern Be it known that I, Ennnsr W. .lAoksoN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Austin, in the county of Travis and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in book covers, and it consists in the co1nbina tions constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a cover which is adapted to be quickly, easily and accurately applied to books of various sizes to protect the binding or cover proper of the book to which applied and which is adapted to be held in applied position on a book of a particular size without exposing any portion of the outer face of the book binding or cover.
A further object of the invention is to provide a substantially rectangular cover blank which is adapted to be operatively applied to books of various sizes within considerable range of sizes without there be ing any necessity of cutting the corner portions of the blank to adapt it for application to a book of any particular size and without the necessity ot placing any adhesive or cementitious substance on the blank for the purpose of securingit on a book.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a book cover blank of the char acter described which has means indicating the position of books of various sizes in respect thereto in order that any oneof such books may be accurately and easily centered on the blank without the use of any 1neas uring devices, whereby the blank may be conveniently and properly applied to books of various sizes.
A still. further object of the invention is to provide a book cover of the character described which is economical to manufacture and thoroughly practical in use.
Other objects and advantages of the in vention will be apparent from the following description, considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view showing a cover embodying the invention in partly folded condition and in a desirable relation to a book, the latter being represented by a rec tangular figure defined. by dot and dash lines,
Figure 2 a relatively enlarged frag- Serial No. 615,073.
mentary View of a corner portion of the structure shown in Figure 1 Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, showing the corner portion of the cover in completely folded and secured position, and
Figure 4 is a plan view of an element adapted for use in holding the folded poi tions of the cover in place.
In carrying out my invention, 1 make use of a blank B which is of substantially rectangular configuration and is made of heavy paper or other suitable flexible material. One "face of the blank B has produced thereon by printing or in any other suitable known manner a series of lines a and Z) extending obliquely from each of the upper and lower edges of the blanks at opposite sides of the transverse median line of the blank toward such transverse median line, the respective lines of each series being parallel with one another and spaced equi-distant apart and the corresponding lines a and Z) of the series at the upper side of the blank and of the series at the lower side of the blank being merged one into the other by curved or arcuate lines 0 which extend in parallel relation to one another and are bisected by the transverse median line of the blank, the series of lines a and 7) .at either the upper or lower sides of the blank thus extendi n g from one of the longitudinal ed out the blank in converging relation in re spect to each other and teri'ninating at such longitudinal edge of the blank at points relatively adjacent to the point at which the transverse median line of the blank intersects the longitudinal edge. The lines a and b are numbered or otherwise marked in sequence, corresponding lines a and 7) of the series at the upper and lower sides of the blank bearing the same designating character and being equidistant at all points along their length from the transverse median line of the blank.
The series of lines a and 7) at the upper side of the blank and the series of lines a and b at the lower side of the blank are each intersected by a series of lines cl, the respectivelines d. extending in equi-distant parallel relation in respect to one another and to the longitudinal lines or edges of the blank. The lines al are numbered or otherwise designated in sequence, the designating character of least value being applied to the line farthest from the adjacent longitudinal edge of the blank, The purpose of the indicia applied to the lines a, b and cl will be hereinafter stated.
Each of the corner portions of the blank is provided with a series of parallel equidistantly spaced apart lines 6 extending from one end portion of one longitudinal edge of the blank to the adjacent end portion of one transverse edge of the blank, the respective lines 6 being bisected by the respective lines 7 which bisects the corner angles of the blank, the lines 6 thus extending at right angles to the intersecting line 7". The lines 6 of each series bear indicia increasing regularly in value from the line 6 proximate to the adjacent corner of the blank.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. In applying the cover, a book the back or binding of which is represented by the dot and dash line rectangular figureindicated at X is placed in opened out position flat upon the blank and may be conveniently and accurately centered thereon, the respective corners of the book binding being placed on corresponding lines 6 of the series at the respective corners of the blank and on the corner angle bisecting lines 7', the expeditious positioning in centered relation on the blank being aided because of the provision of the designating indicia for the line c of the respective series. The lines (Z adjacent to the lower and upper edges of the blank which bear indentifying indicia as stated also aid in establishing the location of the book when in centered relation on the blank. The book is then folded and the extent of thickness thereof is noted and will be coincident with the length of the portion of one of the lines (Z extending between corresponding lines a and b of the series at the upper and lower edges of the blank. Slits are then out along the indicated lines a and I) to the intersection of such lines with the indicated line (i, thereby defining tongues such as indicated at g at the upper and lower edges of the blank. The tongues g are then bent fiat upon the body of the blank and will be disposed between the latter and the binding of the book. I V
The book binding is then placed flat upon the blank in the position in which disposed at the beginning of the operation as herein before described and the sheets of the bookare turned to rest uponone side of the bindingof the book as indicated by the dot and dash lines at X. The corner portions of the blank at the other side of the book binding are then folded upon the lines 0 atthe corners of the book binding as illustrated at the lower left hand corner of Figure 1 to overlie the corner portions of the book binding. The portions of the blank projecting beyond the one side edge of the book binding and beyond the upper and lower edges of the book binding at one side of the tongues g are then folded inwardly over the corresponding edges of the book binding and will assume the position illustrated in Figure 3. The adjacent edges of the in turned side edge and upper and lower edge portions of the blank will substantially coincide with the corner angle bisecting lines on each corner portion of the blankand are held against displacement by means of triangular stickers S which are placed transversely across the end portions of such adjacent inturned flaps. The stickers S are strips of paper or like material having an adhesive or cenientitious substance on one face thereof and the use of such stickers obviates the necessity of applying glue or other ceinentitious substance to the book cover. This is an important advantage since book covers are frequently stored for long periods and when such covers have glue or the like applied thereto, the glue may be softened because of the weather or temperature conditions and the covers may adhere together and thus be ruined for the use for which provided.
When the book cover has been applied to one side of the book binding in the manner described, the sheets X are turned to lie upon the covered side of the book binding and the other portion of the book cover is applied to the corresponding side of the book binding in the same manner as hereinb efore set out in detail. It will be apparent from the foregoing that my improved book cover may be readily and accurately applied to books of various lengths, b'readths and thicknesses and that theapplied cover will snugly lit upon the book binding in such manner as to permit opening and closing of the book without breaking or crumpling the cover and without exposing any portion of the outer face of the book binding.
Obviously, my invention is susceptible of embodiment in forms other than that illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and 1 therefore consider as my own all modifications of the form of the device herein disclosed which fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. A book-binding cover comprising a sub stantially rectangular blank having a series of parallel lines produced on one face of each corner portion thereof and also having on each corner portion a line bisectingthe corner angle and also bisecting the first 1 named lines, said first named lines and said second named lines on each corner portion cooperating to indicate the location of the corresponding corner extremity of a book binding of less breadth and length than the blank when said book binding is disposed lit) llli
flatwise upon the blank in centered relation thereto, the corresponding lines of the respective series of first named lines being similarly marked.
2. A. book-binding cover formed of a substantially rectangular blank having a series of parallel spaced apart lines produced on each cover portion thereof, said blank also having a line produced on each corner portion thereof extending along a diagonal of the blank in intersecting relation to the first named lines on the corner portion and cooperating with the first named lines to indicate the location of the corresponding corner of the binding 01 a book when the latter is opened out on the blank and centered thereon, whereby corner flap portions Will be provided when each corner portion of the blank is folded inward on one of said first named lines across a corner of the bookbinding, and marginal flaps including portions of the corner flaps will be provided when the marginal edge portions of the blank are folded inward across the marginal edges of the book-binding, and adhesive strips extending across the end por tions of adjacent marginal flaps, and secured to said marginal flaps, whereby all of said flaps will be held in folded position.
