Description

H BOGK.
CHECK HOLDER. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 25,1920.
Patented June 21, 1921.
UNITED STATES HER-MAN BOOK, or s'r. PAUL, MInNEso'r-A.
CHECK-HOLDER.
Application filed June 25,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANBOOK, a citizenv of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in check books of the class wherein the checks are bound into pads and removably secured to a folding cover, each check having a stub extension on the same leaf and the usual line of perforations whereby the check portion may be easily torn off.
My improved check book is primarily intended for pocket use, it being therefore desirable that it be small, neat in appearance and convenient to handle. To embody these in a simple construction is the object of my invention.
Other advantages will be hereinafter pointed out. The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed. In the drawings forming part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention partly broken away, the check pad not being shown. 7
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the check pad alone, and
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the invention showing the check pad in folded position and the book closed.
In Fig. l of the drawings is shown the cover or holder made of leather or other suitable material having a middle hingeportion 1, integrally joining together the side members 2 and 3, the latter being shown hingedly joined at its opposite end (by means of the hinge portion 4) to a flap 5. The two sides fold upon one another like the covers of a book, one of the sides carrying as shown a fastening member 6 adapted to cooperate with a fastening member 7 on the flap (when such is employed) to hold the sides in folded position. Extending later ally across the inner surface of the member 3, intermediate its ends, is the retaining member of band 8, the latter being shown suitably secured at its opposite ends to the respective side edges of said member. The check pad shown, comprises a check portion 9, and a stub portion 10, each check and stub being divided by a row of perforations 11, to facilitate tearing off the check por- Specification of Letters Patent.

tion. At its stub end, the pad is suitably bound together in the usual manner to form a book, said binding also securelyholding on the back of the pad like the leaf of: a. book, thebackingqor locking strip 12.x This strip is somewhat stiffer than the leaves of the pad and is of greater length than the stubs 10, and has a bending line 13 intermediate its ends, so that it may be folded inwardly upon itself. The strip is of a width to be freely projected endwise between the member 3 and the band 8, the latter being shown in the drawings so located, as to brin the stub end of the pad adjacent the flap cut of the member 3. V In use, as indicated in Fig. 3, the strip is slipped under the band and folded back over the latter, the bend 18 being preferably coincident with the perforations in the check pad. By folding back the backing strip, the pad is held against longitudinal movement in the cover, the body of the tab lying over the folded portion of the strip and thereby preventing unfolding thereof, when the pad is subjected to longitudinal thrusts. On the inner face of the member 2 is the wall 14 secured along three of its edges to said member to form a pocket. It will be noted, that the folding portion of the strip is somewhat shorter than the portion between the bend and the tab as is best shown in Fig. 3. This con struction facilitates the removal of the pad, in that the body of the latter need be raised but slightly to unfold the strip.
WVhile in the drawings the band 8 is shown positioned on the cover in a manner to accommodate the pad wherein the check portion is folded upon itself, it is to be understood that the band may be placed in various positions to accommodate other forms of blanks.
I claim: 7
1. In adevice of the character described, the combination of a holder centrally foldable to form covers, one of saidI covers being folded at its end to form a flap foldable over the other cover of the holder, a cross mem ber secured to the inner face of one cover and extending across the face thereof, said cross member being unconnected to said cover intermediate of its sides whereby to form an unobstructed passage way, a check pad consisting of a pinrality of checks connected together at one end, and a backing strip secured at one end tothe connected end of the pad and extendso I,
ing inwardly underneath the pad, said backing strip having a line of fold whereby said pad may be anchored within said holder by passing said strip inwardly between the cross member and supporting cover and folding the free end of said strip inwardly between said cross member and ad. s p 2. In combination, a check holder foldable to form two covers, a strap member extending across the inner face of one of said covers, said strap member being connected to the cover along the sides thereof and being centrally unconnected to the cover thereby forming a continuous open ended passage way between said strap member and cover and a pad of bound leaves supporting on its under side a backing strip, said backing strip being of a length sufl1- cient to pass entirely through the passage way between the strap member and cover with its free folded end over said strap member between said member and the leaves of the pad in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
HERMAN BOOK.
