V Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 23, 1918.
Application filed MaylY, 1917*. Se1'ia1 I I0..169,205.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that LJAcon S. VVEINBERG,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of lllinois, have invented certain new and usful lniprovements in Combined Cases and Books, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relatesto combined cases and books, and, in the form of the invention disclosed herein, it has been designed espe cially for use in connection with alesmens sample books. The principal object is to provide a book cover which may be folded to provide a case wholly inclosing the leaves, and which may be unfolded for access tothe leaves. According to the common practice, a separate case is used in connection with salesmens sample books, which case is laid aside whenever the book is taken therefrom for the purpose of exhibiting the samples or illu i ns of merchandise contained in the book. With the present invention, the book and case are made as one and always connected together, so that neither one may become separated from the other. The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
The invention i clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined case and book embodying a simple form of the present invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section thereof; Fig. 3 is a detail vertical cross section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4: is a plan of the combined case and book showing the cover unfolded; and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Referring to said drawings, 10, designates the back of the book, to which are secured the leaves 11, in accordance with any of the common and well known methods. Said back piece 10, also forms the bottom of the case. Hingedly secured to the side edges of the combined backand bottom piece 10, are two sides 12, 13, which, when the case is closed, extend up along the leaves 11. Said sides 12, 13 are slightly longer and wider than the leaves 11, as is common in books. Hingedly secured to the top of the side 13 is a 130 piece 14 which, when the case is closed, overhangs the leaves 11, and has a flap 15 hingedly secured to its free side edge, which flap extends down.
partway across the leaves.
Toboth ends of the side 13, re hingedly secured end members 16, 16, which are adapted toextend across the ends of the leaves, and eachend member 16 has a flap 17, hingedly secured to its free edge, and
when the case is closed, said flap extends partially across the leaves and is secured to, the flap 15 by snap fasteners of common and well known form of construction, one member 19 being secured to each flap 1?, andthecoacting members 20 being secured to the flap 15 in position to snap upon, the
member 19, when the two are pressed together. The side 12, and flap 15,. are also,
provided with similar snap fasteners 21, 22,
for detachably securing together the side 12 and flap 15. A handle 23 is secured to the top piece 1 1, as, for instance, by rivets 24, secured in the top piece and projecting through lengthwise extending slots in the handle 23.
The cover may be made of any suitable material, such as stiff cardboard, faced with any desirable surface finishing material, such as leather, cloth or the like, and the hinge connections may be made in accordance with any of the methods usually employed in hinging sides to backs of hooks.
In use as a case, the cover is fastened together by the snap fasteners, as shown in Fig. 1, and it may be conveniently carried around by the handle 23. To display the leaves (upon which are printed or secured illustrations 01' samples of merchandise), the case may be laid on its side, the snap fastener members 21 of the side 12 detached from the snap fastener members 20, of the flap 15, the side 12, swung open, the snap fastener members 20 of the flap 15 detached from the snap fastener members 19 of the side flaps 17, the top 141C with its flap 15, swung back and the end pieces with their flaps sway back, as seen in Fig. 4, thereby exposing the leaves 11, which may be turned back to exhibit any one thereof. If desired, the top 14: and ends 16 with their flaps may be inserted between the leaves and side 13 whereby the device will have the appearance of a sample book. To inclose the leaves, the ends are swung up against the ends of the leaves, and their flaps laid down on the leaves; the top is then swung up against the adjacent edges of the leaves,
17 and then secured thereto by the snap fasteners. The side '12 is then closed down on the flaps 15, 17 and secured to the top flap by the snap fasteners 20, 21.
I am aware that various alternatives and modifications are possible Without departing from the spirit of this invention. I desire, therefore, not to limit myself to the exact formof the invention shown and described, but'in'tend in the following claims to point out all of the invention disclosed herein.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 5 1. A combined case and book comprising a back piece and bound leaves secured thereto, two sides hingedly secured to the side edges of said back piece and forming the covers for the book, a top piece hingedly secured to one of the sides and having a flapadapted to extend along the'other side,
hingedly secured end pieces havlng flaps adapted to extend along said other side, means for securing the top flap to the end piece flaps, and means for securing said other side to the top flap.
:2. A combined case and book comprising a back piece and bound leaves secured thereto, two sides liingedly secured to said back piece and forming the covers of the book,
a top piece and end pieces hingedly secured 1 to one of said sides and each having a flap adapted to extend along the other side, a handle secured to said top piece, snap fasteners for securing together the top flap and the end flaps, and snap fasteners for 1 V securing said flaps to said other side.
3. A combined case and book, comprising a back piece and bound leaves secured thereto, two sides hingedly secured to said back piece and forming the covers for the book, 1
a top piece and end pieces hingedly secured to said sides, and capable of extending across the edges of the leaves, said top and end pieces having flaps hingedly secured to said pieces and capable of extending along Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
