W. H. BROWNELL.
. ARTISTS BOX.
No. 275,882. Patented Apr. 17, 1883.
- WITNWEQSSES: I gvmwoni ATTORNEYS.
INITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. BROWNELL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK,
ARTISTS BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,882, dated April 17, 1883.
Application filed December 1,1682. (No model.)
' brushes, and other artists materials, the object being to furnish an article that can be used conveniently for sketching purposes, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved box in an open position, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box arranged as an easel.
The box consists of an upper part, A, and lower part, B, hinged together for carrying the box. The lower part, B, is formed with suitable receptacles-for brushes, paints, &c. Theupper part, A, is for holding paper or a block, and is provided with fixed catches d and a sliding catch, 0, for retaining a block in place. At the ends of the box are rings aa for strap, which will serve as a handle for carrying and also for strapping the box upon the knee of the person while sketching.
O is a palette of a size for fitting in the lower part, B, upon the partitions, so as to retain the material in place while the box is being carried. This palette is formed with wells 2' for holding mixed water-colors.
D is a sketching-pad, consisting of a plate attached by loose hinges c to the outer edge of the upper part, A, of the box, so that it may lie fiat in the box, supported by a stop, g, and held by a catch, h, and may be placed in the inclined position shown in Fig. 2 for use as an easel, the lower part, B,of the box being provided on the rearface ofits front part with astrip, forming a groove, m, for receiving the lower end of the pad or plate D when the same is to be held in an inclined position; or, in place of providing the groove m, hooks or catches for receiving the lower end of the pad or plate D can be secured on the inner surface of the front of the lower part, B, of the box. The plate has turned edges for retaining the paper in place, and by removal from its hinges can be used separately. I prefer to hinge the pad to the upper part;
but it may be hinged to the lower part on the U pintlesf, and in that case, when used as an easel, the pad will rest beneath the top A for its support.
Having thus described my in vention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a box for artists materials, of a pad hinged to one edge of the upper part of the box and provided with overturned edges for holding papers on the pad, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a box for artists materials, constructed with a groove in the inner surface of its front part, of the pad D, hinged to one edge of the upper part of the box and provided with overturned edges for holding papers on the pad, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the edge of the pad is adapted to be passed into the groove for the purpose of holding the cover of the box raised and the pad in the desired position, as set forth.
WILLIAM H. BROVVNELL.
