To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, INGEBORG E. A. JEN- SEN,,1 subject of the King of Denmark, residing at River Forest, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Suit-Cases, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to suitcases, and has for its object to provide a suitcase which may be extended laterally of itself to increase its carrying capacity.

Another object is to provide the suitcase with one or more outwardly opening pockets, one for containing a flexible game board, such as a checker board, and the other for containing the checkers, chess or other objects that are to be used with the board.

To such ends the invention consists in certain novel features of arrangement, construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a perspective view of a suitcase embodying my invention, showing the flexible game board withdrawn and partly broken away, and showing the extended position of its extensible section in dotted lines, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the suitcase in its open position with one end flap raised and the extended position of its opposite end flap and the top flap shown in dotted lines, Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section of the suitcase, with one end flap broken out and showing in dotted lines the extending position of the extensible section, Fig. 4 is a detail sectional perspective View of the upper end of the suitcase in its extended position, Fig. 5 is a detail sectional perspective view of the lower end of the suitcase, Fig. 6 is a similar view showing the suitcase extended and Fig. 7 is a fragmental sectional perspective view of a joint between a partition and the bottom. As shown in these views the case, in general, comprises two sections A, B, hinged together at the bottom by means of hinges a, a, the members of which are separable and here shown as comprising

10, 11, and buckles 12. Each section comprises a side 13, top 14, bottom 15, and ends 16, joined together in the form of an ordinary boxlike structure. The

10, 11, of the hinges are secured to the bottoms 15 of the sections and are buckled together to act as hinges when the case is used in its condensed form. The two sections are further secured together by straps 17, that are attached to the bottom of the section B, and

pass around the section A, said straps being coupled by means of buckles 18, to straps 19, that are attached to the top 14:, of said section B. A handle 20, is slidably connected to the straps 17 and furnishes convenient means for carrying the case. Overhan ing strips 21, are secured to the free edges 0 the top and ends of the section B, and overhang the free edges of the top and ends of the section A. A partition C, is provided for dividing the case into two main compartments, and as shown is hinged to the section B, by a flexible hinge 0, here shown as comprising a strip of fabric. For the sake of clearness this partition has been omitted from Fig. 6.

The section A, is bodily movable in a lateral direction with respect to the section B, for the purposeof increasing its carrying capacity, and the means for accomplishing this result comprises a top flap 22, and end flaps 23, that are hinged to the top and ends of the section A, and a laterally extensible bottom piece 24, arranged to extend between the adjacent ends of the bottoms 15. The flaps are shown as hinged to their supports by hinges 25, preferably constructed of flexible material such as canvas strips which are glued or otherwise secured to the flaps and. their supports, and said flaps are arranged to fold down against the inner faces of the top and ends of the section A, when not in use, but they are swung out from the edges of the top and ends when it is desired to increase the carrying capacity of said section. Buttons or other fastenings 26, are secured to the top and ends of the section A, and are arranged to be moved up against the flaps to hold them from swinging inward after they have been extended. The buttons are shown as pivoted to the top and ends of the section A, and capable of being swung out into place to hold the flaps in extended position.

22, 23, fastening them in place with the buttons 26, the case may be used in its extended condition, the flexible bottom piece 2st, in this case acting as the hinge connection between the two sections. It is to be observed that the overhanging strips 21-, and buttons 26, hold the flaps in extended position while the two sections are bound together. A pocket 30, isformed in one section and opens out through the side 13, a cover or flap 31, being provided for closing the opening. J ournaled within said pocket is a roller 32, upon which may be rolled a flexible game board 33, such as a checker board that may be drawn out through the opening. and laid down upon the flat side 13, of the case. A second pocket 3%, may be provided in: the same section for containing the checkers or other objects 35, which are to be used in connection with the game board, and said pocketmay be closed by a slide 86, guided on the inner face of the side. This arrangement furnishes a C011- venient means for storing the flexible game board and checkers, and the flat side of the case furnishes a Hatsurface uponwhich the flexible game board may be laid.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In a suitcase, the combination with two suitcase sections, of hinges, having separable members, secured to the lower meeting edges of said sections, a flexible bottom connecting the bottoms of the sections, and flaps hinged to the top and ends of one of the sections, said flexible bottom and flaps being arranged to be extended out beyond the edges of said top, bottom and ends, to form a section of increased width and means for binding the sections together.

2. In a suitcase, the combination with two suitcase sections, each having a top, bottom,

side and ends, of hinges having separable members, connecting said sections, a flexible bottom piece arranged between the bottoms of the sections, top and end flaps hinged to the edges of the tops and ends of one section and: arranged to be folded down against the inner faces of said top and ends when the case is condensed or to be extended out toward the other section to form a section of increased width, buttons secured to the top and ends for holding said flaps against inwardmovement from their extended position and means for binding the sections together.

3. In a suitcase, the combination with two suitcase sections, of a flexible bottom connecting the bottoms of the sections, top and end flaps hinged to the top and ends of one section and adapted to be folded down against the inner sides of said top and ends,

or extended out to meet the top and: ends of the opposite section, and strap hinges secured to the bottoms of the sections and hav- I ing buckles for connecting the members of each strap hinge whereby said strap hinges may be separated; substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
