BOOK-COVER PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 5, 1919.
llpplication filed July 31, 1917, Serial No. 183,738. Renewed April 4, 1919. Serial No. 287,618.
1' '0 all who/n z'tmay concern:
Be 'it known that I, ALBERT H. Mo
CLATCHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvemcntsin Book-Cover Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to book cover protectors of the slip cover type.
The object ofthe inventlon is to provide a simply constructed and efficient device of this, character adapted to be put over a book to protect its binding from soiling and wear as well as to reinforce in strength and stiflnejss paper bound books.
5 Another object is tosupply such a cover protector which is neat in appearance and which may be easily applied and removed.
1 Another object is to provide a book cover protector of this character having its corners and the edges of its back reinforced to prevent tearing and curling thereof.
VVith theforegoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the preciseembodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is, claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a front elevation taken from the inside of a book cover protector constructed in accordance with this invention and in open position,
Fig. 2 is an end view thereof shown applied.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the cover protector in closed position shown applied,
Fig. 1 is a rear edge View thereof,
Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 3,
Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail transverse section taken on the line 66 of Fig. 3,
Fig. 7 is a side elevation showing a slightly different form of cover protector,
Fig. 8 is a transverse section taken on the line 88 of Fig. 7, the cover protector beingd shown applied in both of these figures, an
Fig. 9 is a detail perspective view of a book marker to be used in connection with this cover protector.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 to (3, a cover protector is shown composed of side members 1 and 2 connected by a back member 3, all of which are preferably made from a single sheet of material preferably of oil cloth or other suitable fabric, which as shown in the figures referred to, has its edges bound with a reinforcing fabric l, the binding a being glued, stitched orosccured to the protector in any suitable manner. This a cover protector is provided at its corners with corner reinforcers or protectors 5 and 5 made of metal or any suitable stifl' material, the two members 5 at one side of the cover being held in position by clips (3, and the two members 5 at the other side by snaps 21. These corners may be applied and permanently remain on the cover and the snaps may be unfastened when the protector is to be Slipped on or off a book so that the corners of the protector to which they are applied may be opened to prevent all possibility of the corners or edges of the book cover being injured. The corner pieces 5 and 5' as shown, are preferably constructed of metal strips, each of which is folded transversely along diverging oblique lines shown at 16 in Figs. 1 and 3, which provide a triangular outer portion 17 (see Fig. 3), with the ends of said strips which form the corner pieces 5 connected by clips 6 abutting along their inner edges as shown at 18 in Fig. 1, while the edges of the pieces 5 connected by the snaps 21 overlap as shown at the right of Fig. 1.
Elastic straps 7 and 8 extend longitudinally across the side members 1 and 2, preferably near the back 3 thereof and are connected to the bindings of the protector at the ends thereof by clips 9 similar to the clips 6 used in connection with the corner pieces. The elastic strap 7 is fastened permanently at its opposite ends, while strap 8 is made in two sections 10 and 11, which are connected at their inner meeting ends by a snap fastener 12 or any other suitable detachable means and at their opposed ends are permanently connected to the protector. By unfastening the snaps 12 carried by the meeting ends of strap sections 10 and 11, the application and removal of the protector is facilitated. The book to which this protector is applied has its leaves shown at L and its cover at C and is preferably provided with a marker 13 which is shown in the form of a plate 14 having a strip of flexible material 15 connected at one end thereto, the other end of which may be connected with the back of the cover in any desired manner, such as by gluing or the-like,
. the member 1 1 being designed to be placed between leaves L at the point desired to be marked.
While this protector is shown in Figs. 1 to 6 bound around its edges and provided with the reinforcing corner pieces 5 and 5', and
folded in over the edge of cover C as shown in Fig. 8.
'From the above description it will be obvious that this book cover protector may be readily applied or removed simply by disconnecting the members of the snaps 12 and 21 and slipping the protector over the side members of the book cover with the leaves L of the book disposed in the position shown in Fig. 2, the back 3 of the protector spanning the back of the book in the usual manner.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection withthe accompanylng drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of I' atents,
thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the claimed invention- I claim p g V V 1. A book cover protector of theclass described comprising connected side and back members, an elastic strip for each side membcr extending longitudinally on the inner faces of the side members of said cover protector, each of said strips b'eingpermanentlyattached at its opposite ends to the side members, one strip being made in sections with forcing corner pieces, two of which are connected to the protector to permanently hold the protector corners to which they are ap plied in engagedposition-and two connected to the protector to detachably secure the.
other corners.
4. A book cover protector having reinforcing corner pieces, two of which have I overlapping edges connected by snaps, said corner pieces overlapping the protector at" the corners thereof. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
