LOOSE-LEAF BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15, 1912.
Appltcatlon filed March 7, 1912. Serial No. 682,197.
, invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in loose leaf book covers or binders and is designed as an improvement over the binder shown in my Patent #906,365, dated December 8, 1908:
The object of the invention is to provide a binder or cover of this character having means for permitting the removalfrom the book of the loose leaves without unlacing the binding cord.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement .of parts as will be more fully escribed hereinafter and claimed.
In the accompanying drawin s; Figure 1 represents a plan view of the ront face of a book equipped with this invention; Fig. 2 is a view of the rear face of the book; Fig. 3 is a plan ,view of the inside of a book opened out flat; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a plan view of the outer side of the cover showin the manner in which the binding cord 1s released to permit the cover sections to be opened out flat; Fig. 6 is a transverse section of the book with the covers opened back to back for use on the arm of a chair.
. In the embodiment of the invention front and back cover sections 1 and 2 are provided each of which consists of a main or body portion 3 and a hinge strip 4. These parts may be made of paper board or any suitable material and the ody portion 3 is preferably connected tothe hinge strip 4 by the fabric covering of the boards, said covering being applied to the body portion and binge strip n one piece as shown.
In each hinge strip 4 of each cover section is arranged a series of eyelets 5 so when the cover sections are in proper position on the leaves of the book they will be in alinement, and a binding cord 6 is adapted to be passed through said alined eyelets. The binding cord has formed therein near one end a knot 6 and in applying the cord to the cover sections the longer end of the cord is passed through the registeringjeyeletsat one end and then through the registering eyelets at the other end and this end of the cord is provided with a fastening device preferably in the form of a resilient socket 7 which is adapted to engage with a stud 8 secured to the outer face of the hinge strip of one of the cover sections preferably at a point about midway of the length of said strip, when this end of the cord is drawn through the eyelets far enough to allow the socket '4' to be engaged with the stud 8.
Then it is desired to open the book out flat the socket 7 is disengaged from the stud S which will permit the cord to be drawn through the eyelets thus permitting slack in the loop formed between the eyelets which will permit the cover sections .to be drawn apart a greater or less distance according to the length of the loop and the length of the cord whereby the cover sections may be laid flat and the leaves opened out thereon. This arrangement greatly facilitates the use of the book for many purposes and enables a ruler to be laid flat across the pages. In constructing the cover or hinder the cord should be of sutlicient length to permit the loop between its ends to be loosened when desired to accommodate additional leaves which may from time to time be added to the book and by tying a loop at the other end of the cord the same may be readily released when desired such for instance as in the substitution of a new cord.
The cover above described is the same as that shown in the Meat above referred to and it will be obvious that whenthis construction is employed it is necessary to thread the binding cord through apertures formed in the rear edge of the leaves to be bound. and to remove one of said leaves or to insert a new one necessitates the unlacing and relacing of the binding cord, at least the releasing of the ends thereof and the 'removal of one of the'covers. It is to obviate these objectionable features that this invention is designed and which consists in providing one of the hinge members 4 on its inner face with a plurality of longitud1- ,nally spaced laterally projecting studs 10 .two being here shown arranged between the signed to be passed through apertures 1'1 formed in the rear edges of the leaves 12 to be bound, as shown clearly in Fig. 1, said apertures being formed by a suitable punch.
These leaves 12 are also provided at their rear edges at points registering with the cord apertures in the hinge members with apertures 13 whichopen through the rear edges E of the leaves to provide for the sliding of i the leaves from the binding cord at opposite ends of the binder as shown clearly in Fig. 1. 5 Vhen'it is desired to place a new leaf 12 on the binder all that is necessary is to release the socket 7 from the stud 8 and;
, open the binder into fiat position shown in Fig. 1 when a leaf 12 having apertures 11 1 and 13 described above therein may be engaged with the studs 10 and the bindingi cord in the manner described.
The other hinge member 4 of the other cover is provided with a plurality of ap ertures 14 arranged to register with the studs 10 on the hinge member of the cooperating cover and said studs are adapted to pass through said apertures 14 when the covers are in closed binding. position. It
will thus be seen that a leaf may be applied to or removed from the book without interfering with the lacing cord,
Iclaim as my invention:
1. A loose leaf binder comprising front and back cover sections having near their rear edges a series of alined eyelets or ap ertures, a flexible binding element laced through said eyelets and. fastened at one end, means for fastening the free end of said binding element when said element is drawn tight, studs extending laterally from the inner face of one of said cover sections the other section having eyelets arranged near its rear edge inposition to register with the studs of the mentioned section and adapted to be engaged therewith.
3. A loose leaf binder comprising front and back cover sections havingnear their rear edges a series of alinegl eyelets or apertures, a flexible binding element laced through said eyelets and fastened atone end, means for fastening the free end of said binding element when said element is drawn tight, studs extending laterally from the inner iace of one of said cover sections the other section having eyelets arranged the studs of one of the cover sections and open slots disposed to register with the eyelets through which the binding element passes.
'3. The combination with a loose leaf binder comprising front and rear sections having a series of alined eyelets near their rear edges, a flexible binding element laced through said eyelets, one of said sections having laterally extending longitudinally spaced studs of detachable leaves having apertures positioned to register with the studs of the cover section and slots opening through the rear edge thereof positioned to register with the eyelet through which the binding element passes.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
