XVLADYSLAUS JESCHKE, OF BROOKLYN, NEXV YORK.
COVER OR BINDER FOR MAGAZlNES, 84,0.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 602,452, dated April 19, 1898.
Application filed September 27, 1897. Serial No. 653,231. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that l, WLADYsLAUs J ESCHKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers or Binders for Magazines, Pamphlets, and other Publications, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to covers or binders for magazines, pamphlets, and other publications; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and by means of which said publications may be conveniently bound, a further object being to provide a cover or binding of the class referred to which is adjustable and the capacity of which may be enlarged or decreased, as desired.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which--- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved cover or binding in an open position and showing the method of the operation thereof, and Fig. 2 a central transverse section showing the binding closed and the publications bound therein.
In the practice of my invention I provide a cover or binding for the purpose herein specified, which consists of two side plates or boards 5, which may be composed of any desired material, and one of these side plates or boards is provided with a supplemental casing 6, by means of which a space 7 is formed, which is substantially of the size of the said plate or board of which the corresponding side of the binding is composed and this space opens backwardly, as shown at 8, and secured to the opposite side plate or board 5 of the binding, as shown at 9, is a flexible back piece 10, which may be composed of leather or any preferred material, and this flexible back piece or one edge or side thereof is adapted to be inserted into the space 7 through or at the opening 8 thereof.
That portion of the flexible back 10 which is adapted to be inserted into the space 7 is provided centrally thereof with a transverse row of perforations 11, any desired number of which may be employed, and I also provide asplit pin or similar device 12,which is passed through corresponding openings in the side board 5 in which the space 7 is formed and also through one of said holes or openings 11 and through the supplemental casing 6, and by means of this device, as will be readily understood, the thickness of the cover or binding may be regulated as desired.
The supplemental casing 6 may be composed of any desired material, and flexibly connected therewith at 13 is a binding strip or plate 14, and a corresponding binding strip or plate 16 is connected with the back 5 ad j acent to the opposite side board 5 of the binding or cover, as shown at 17, and formed in each of these binding-strips are perforations or openings 18, four of which are preferably employed in each of said strips, and connected with one of said binding-strips, preferably that designated by the reference-numeral 14, are buttons or similar fastening devices 19, and in binding the magazines, periodicals, pamphlets, or other publications a cord 20 is passed through the central perforations or openings in the binding-strip 18 and through the publications 21 and through the central openings 18 in the binding-strip 16 and then through the outer or end openings 18 in said binding-strips 16 and through the publications 21 and then through the outer openings 18 in the binding-strip 14, and the ends thereof are connected with the buttons or other fastening devices, as clearly shown in the draw- 1ngs.
The ends of the cord 20 are preferably provided with needles or other pointed instruments 22 in order to facilitate the operation of securing the publications in position, as above described, and it will be apparent that by removing the pin 12 the width of the back of the binding at 10 may be adjusted as desired by simply pulling the extension thereof out of the space 7 or by shoving part of said extension into said space, and the pin 12 will securely hold the part 10 of the binding in any desired position.
My improvement is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A cover or binding for publications and other articles, consisting of two sides or boards one of which is provided with a space or chamber which opens backwardly, a flexible back connected with the other side, and adapted to be inserted into said space, and two flexible binding-strips one of. which is secured to said flexible back, adjacent to the side with which it is connected, and the other being flexibly secured to the side in which said space or chamber is formed, substantially as shown and described.
2. A cover or binding for publications and other articles, consistin g of two sides or boards one of which is provided with a space or chamber which opens backwardly, a flexible back connected with the other side, and adapted to be inserted into said space, and two flexible binding-strips one of which is secured to said flexible back, adjacent to the side with which it is connected, and the other being flexibly secured to the side in which said space or chamber is formed, and means for securing the flexible back in said space or chamber, and for adjusting the position thereof, substantially as shown and described.
3. A cover or binding for publications and other articles, consisting of two sides or boards one of which is provided with a space or chamher which opens backwardly, a flexible back connected with the other side, and adapted to be inserted into said space, and two flexible binding-strips one of which is secured to said flexible back, adjacent to the side with which it is connected, and the other being flexibly secured to the side in which said space or chamber is formed, and means for secur ing the flexible back in said space or chamher, and for adjusting the position thereof, and said binding-strips being provided with transverse perforations or openings, and a cord which is adapted to be passed therethrough, and through the publications or other articles, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this th day of September, 1897.
