C. E.- DAUGHERTY..
LOOSE LEAF BINDER.
APPLICATION FILED AUGJO, 191a.

A TTORIVEV CHARLES E. DAUGHERTY, 0F PORTLAND, OREGON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
noose-LEAF BINDER.
Patented Mar. 5, 1918.
Application filed August 10, 1916. Serial No. 114,171
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. DAUGH are laid out fiat, and which are designed to be carried in the pocket of a salesman.
lleretofore the leaves have been bound or secured within the covers of such books by means of circular rings passing through perforations in the leaves, the objection to which construction is that said rings cause the back of the book to assume a semicircular shape which is cumbersome and inconvenient, results in much loss of space, and makes a book wider than necessary for a given width of leaves.
The object of my invention is to overcome the above defects, and to produce a device which, while enabling the perforated leaves to be easily attached and detached, or to be spread out flat, will conserve the waste space incidental to the use of said rings, and thus provide a book the width of which is a minimum for any given. width of leaves to be secured therein.
I accomplish the above obj cot, and useful results, by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which therefore becomes a part of this application for Letters Patent, and in which:-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a loose leaf book or hinder embodying my invention, parts being broken away to best illustrate the construction.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan view showing one of the binding devices, with the covers laid open.
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation upon line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a detailed elevation, upon an enlarged scale, of one of the binding devices.
Like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the various views of the drawing.
The book consists of a front cover 5 and I a back cover 6 flexibly united by a back 7,
said front cover having flexibly secured thereto a. flap 8, and said back cover having flexibly secured thereto a flap 9, between which flaps the leaves 10 are secured.
Pivotally attached to flap 9 are binding posts for the purpose of holding the loose leaves 10, the novel construction of which is as follows:
A flat bar 11 is pivotally attached to flap 9 by means of a screw 12, the end of said bar opposite said screw being turned up and slotted to form a hinge 13.
A post 14: integral with said bar 11 rises therefrom substantially vertically adjacent said screw 12, the upper end of said post being curved in line with said bar and toward the hinged end 13 thereof, as shown A post 15 is pivotally mounted within the hinge 13, the upper end of which is curved to meet the end 141' of post 1 1 when post 15 is substantially parallel to post 14, as shown at 15.
Post 15-is thus enabled to open into position 15 for the purpose of enabling perforated loose leaves to be placed in position.
with the post 14 passed through said perforations, and to be closed thereafter.
. When the book is Figs. 2 and 3, the leaves may be passed around and over the ends 11 and 15* from position 10 to position 10, and vice-versa. as shown in Fig. 3, the binding posts then standing substantially parallel to one another and to the sides of the open book. as
shown in Fig. 2.
When the leaves are all upon the post l-it. or in position 10, and the book is to be closed, the binding posts may be rotated.
about pivotal screws 12 into a position shown at 18 in Fig. 2, and as illustrated in Fig. 1, in which position the post 15 is immediately adjacent to the back edges of the bound leaves 10.
To hold the binding posts in position 18 I provide obliquely arranged slots 19 in flap 8 which will coincide with the position 18 of the binding posts when the cover 5 is folded over upon the leaves 10, thus allowing the binding posts to be passed through the corresponding slots 19, as shown in Fig. 1.
As a means of locking the device in book form, and preventing the same from opening opened flat, as shown in out flat unless-so desired, I provide hooks 2O pivotally attached to flaps 8 adjacent slots 19, each of said hooks being adapted to be passed over its adjacent slot beneath the closed ends 14 and 15? of the binding post, as shown in Fig. 1. r
When thus securely locked closed the back 7 is brought into close juxtaposition to the back edges of the inclosed leaves 10, thus eliminating the Waste space heretofore occupied by the binding rings, and thus reducing the Width of the book for any given, Width of leaves. 7 7
My invention may be made of anysize and constructed of any materials deemed con- Venient and suitable for a device of this character, and While I have illustrated and described a form of construction and arrangement of parts found desirable in materializing my invention, 1 Wish to include in this application for Letters Patent all mechanical equivalents or substitutes that may fairly be considered to come Within the scope and purview of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having disclosed my invention so that others skilled in the art may be enabled to construct and use same, What I claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a loose leaf binder; a pair of covers;
a back flexibly connecting said covers; bars pivotally mounted Within said covers; posts integral with said bars adjacent said pivotal points; posts pivotally mounted upon said bars, the ends of said posts meeting beyond said bar to form an inclosure therewith, said bars being adapted to take an oblique position Within said covers; and means within said covers to lock said bars in said ohlique positions.
2. In a loose leaf binder having a pair of covers; oppositely disposed flexibly attached flaps Within said covers; one of said flaps CHARLES E. DAUGHERTY.
