SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 385,085, dated June 26, 1888.

Application filed September-28, 1885.

To all whom it may concern.-

Beit known that I, GEORGE AUTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lacon, in the county of Marshall and State of Illinois, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Portfolios; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

My invention relates to improvements in portfolios for the filing and preservation of newspapers; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, which fully illustrate my invention, Figure l is a perspective view of my device opened. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing it closed, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the locking-bar in Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings by letter, A des ignates the bottom of my device, composed of a number of slats arranged at right angles to each other and secured together, as shown. At three edges of the open frame-work thus formedn I secure the vertical strips e, which are rigidly secured and held in place by the `angle-irons N. To the fourth edge of the framework, composing the bottom of my device, I hinge the strip t, of the same height as the strips e. To the upper free edge of this strip t', I secure by hinges one of the covers C, the other one of said covers being hinged to the said strip e. These covers are composed of slats crossing each other and secured to getherin a manner similar to the bottom of the device.

The meeting edgesof the hinged covers overlap, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and upon the under side of one of the covers I provide the sliding bars D D, the ends of which engage staples f, secured to the upper and lower strips, e. These sliding bars are held in the frame or 4cover by means of the short blocks or strips a b c d, the ends of which rest on the strips composing the covers. These blocks also serve as handles or knobs to facilitate the projecting and withdrawing of the sliding bars to cause them to engage or be disengaged from the staples j', to hold thccovers on the device or allow, them to be swung over, as will be readily understood. These staples are secured to the sides of the strips and project up above the edges of the same, as will be readily understood.

in its opposite ends with the depending pins a: y, which impinge against the blocks b c, and

thereby prevent the accidental withdrawing of the sliding bars D.

Vhen it is desired to open the device, the turn-button is turned out of engagement with the blocks b c and the sliding bars are withdrawn from engagement with the staples. The covers are then swung over, and newspapers may be then readily placedin and removed from the device. The hinged strip t' leaves an open space when folded over on the table, which facilitates the handling of the papers while in the device. The device is very strong, and, being composed of slats crossing each other, is very simple and light.

Having thus described myinvention, whatI claim, and desire to secure 1s 1. rIhe combination of 4the bottom, strips e secured thereto, the hinged covers, bails or staplesf, secured to the strips e, sliding bars held on the covers and adapted to engage the staples f, and a turn-button on the covers t0 normally hold said sliding bars in engagement with said staples, substantially as specified.

2. The combination of the bottom, strips e secured thereto, the hinged covers,I bails or staples f, secured to the strips c, and sliding bars D D, adapted to engage the staplesf and provided with the blocks a b c d, the ends of which rest on the strips composing the covers, substantially as specified.

3. The herein-described portfolio, comprising the slatted bottom A, having the rigid sides e and the hinged sides t, the slatted cover forming the top for the portfolio, said cover being made in overlapping sections, one section being hinged to one of the rigid sides e, and the other section being hinged to the side c', the staples f, secured to the rigid sides, and the sliding bars on one of said sections engaging the staples f, as set forth.

4. In a portfolio, the slatted bottom A, the rigid sides c, secured around three of the edges of the botttom A, the hinged side z', secured to the other edge of the bottom, and the slat ted cover, one section of which is secured to one of the rigid sides, and the other section is secured to the hinged side, the sections of the cover being secured together, as set forth.
