SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,445, dated March 9, 1897.

To all whom it may concern.-

' Be it known that I, HERBERT A. COBLEIGH, a citizen of the'United States, and a resident of Wood Haven, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof,in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to collapsible or foldingboxes, crates, and similar articles; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and the separate parts of which may be compactly folded together, when desired, or extended and formed into a box or crate.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my improved collapsible box, showing the separate parts thereof hinged according to my invention and showing one end folded adjacent to one of the sides or the back thereof and the front and top or cover in such position as to clearly show the construction; and Fig. 2, a transverse section of the box or crate.

In the practice of my invention I provide a box or crate which consists of a back A, ends 13, a bottom 0, a top or cover D, and a front E, together with a narrow supplemental strip F, which is secured to the bottom of the back A, and to which the bottom is hinged, and which forms a part of said bottom.

The ends B are hinged to the back by ordinary hinges b, which are preferably countersunk, and said ends may be folded adjacent to the back, as shown in Fig. 1, or extended at right angles thereto, as is also shown in Fig. 1, and the supplemental strip F, to which the bottomO is mounted, is preferably secured to the back A by angular plates G, which are formed on or secured to one leaf of the hinges H, by which the bottom 0 is secured to said supplemental strip, and said hinges H and the plates G may be also counter-- sunk, if desired.

The top or cover D is hinged to the top of the back A by means of double-jointed or three-plate hinges K, the side plates of said hinge being secured to the back and to the top or cover D, and the central plate being hinged to or pivotally connected with said side plate, and as thus constructed the top or cover D may be folded over adjacent to or flush with the back of the box. The front E is also connected with the bottom 0 by means of similar double-jointed hinges K, and said front may be folded over adjacent to the under side of the bottom 0, and pivotally connected with the ends B, adjacent to the upper outer corners thereof, are hooks L, which are adapted to operate in connection with eyes, loops, or staples M, secured to the inner side of the front E, adjacent to the upper corners thereof, and by means of these hooks the ends B and the front E will be securely held in the desired position when said ends and front are arranged to form a box or crate,a11d the hinged top or cover D may be also provided with a spring-catch, if desired.

As thus constructed it will be seen that the ends may be folded adjacent to the back, the bottom adjacent to said ends, the front adjacent to the bot-tom, and the top or cover advantages, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A collapsible or folding box or crate, substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of a back A, ends B, a bottom 0, front E and a top or cover D, said back A, having secured along one edge thereof, a strip F to which the bottom is hinged, the ends B being hinged to the back A and adapted to be folded thereupon over the strip F, which strip, is secured in position by angular plates G, to one end of which plates are secured the hinges H attaching the back A to the bottom 0, the top In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have sign ed my name, in pres- 1o ence of the subscribing Witnesses, this 27th HERBERT A.
