Music-BOOK ROLL.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 1907.
Application filed June 25, 1907. Serial No. 380.715.
To all whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, DON H. YORK, citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Music-Book Rolls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object a simple, durable and efficient construction of music book-roll o r combination of music book and music roll, which will be capable of a comparatively large number of diversified uses of adjustment for holding either sheetor book music in a temporarily bound form for protection or'for carrying the same from place to place, and the invention consists in certain constructions, arrangements and combinations of the parts which I shall hereinafter fully describe and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the meansfor effectingthe result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of the book flattened out; Fig, 2 shows the music-holder folded in book form Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the holder rolled and the handle applied to retain it in this position; Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the holder folded in the form of a hand-bag; and, Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the handle.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
My improved music book-roll comprises a flexible cover which may be formed of leather, cloth, or any other desired material or substance, either with or without lining of any character, the said cover comprising members 1 and 2 that are adapted to be folded one upon the other as well as rolled after folding, said two members being integrally connected together and folded along a median line, or of two separate sheets connected together at their meeting edges in any desired manner. The cover may be-said to comprise four pages a, b, c and cl, the page a being the first outside page, the page t the first inside page, c the adjoining page, and d the back outside page. The member 2 may be provided, if desired, with a fly strip 3, as clearly illustrated in the drawing.
The two members 1 and 2 of the flexible cover are provided at their adjoining or meeting edges with complemental rows of eyelets 4 designed to receive temporary binders l5, which are, preferably, my improved construction of elastic book binders for which I have filed a separate application for Letters Patent of the United States, Serial No. 369,638, dated April 22nd, 1907.
TheI member 1 is provided at its outer edge with a pair of preferably metallic sockets 6. The member 2 is provided near its inner edge with a pair of similar sockets 7 and is also provided with another pair of sockets 8 near the middle of the page c,and another pair of sockets 9 near the fly strip 3. All of these sockets, on both members 1 and 2 preferabl face outwardly or towards the pages a and so as to avoid any projecting parts of metal which would rbe liable to scratch a music cabinet, musical instrument, or music rack, whenlaid thereon. The iiy strip 3 is provided with a pair of spring posts or studs 10 which preferably project inwardly from the thirdnpage (page c).
-11 designates a iiexible handle which may be used in connection with the members 1 and 2 of my improved music book holder, said handle being constructed of leather, cloth or any other substance or material, preferably of the same material of which the members 1 and 2 are formed. This handle is flexible, as intimated, and is provided with widened ends 11a, each end being provided with a transversely extending series of spring posts or studs 12 designed to be received in the sockets of the members 1 and 2, according to the desired arrangement of the parts.
As set forth at a simple, cheap and durable construction of temporary binder or cover for either book or sheet music to protect `the same or to carry it from place to place, but a device of this character which is capable of being adjusted to hold themusic in different ways, according to the character of the same or the tastes of the individual user.
As some examples of adjustments of which my invention is susceptible, it is to be noted that, if desired, the music after being secured to the members 1 and 2 may be for-med into a roll and easily carried, the spring posts or studs 10 of the fly strip 8 being fastened in the sockets 6.
4the outset of the specifica-v tion, my invention has for its object, not only If desired, the device may be carried flat like a stiff bound book, merely by securing the studs or posts l2 of the handle ll in the sockets 6 at one side and in the sockets 9 at the opposite side. Or, if desired, the music may be rolled, and the fly strip 2 secured over the member l and the handle studs 12 secured in the sockets 8 and in the sockets 9, so that the roll may be carried by the handle, an adjustment of the handle 'being capable according to the size of the roll by the plural number of spring posts or studs 12 extending in transverse series at the two ends of the handle. Or, again, the device may be used in the nature or form of a hand bag by securing the handle of the sockets 9 at one side and to the sockets 7 at the other side.
It is to be particularly noted that the two series of posts or studs l2 of the handle are located from each other a distance greater than the sockets of any one pair. By this means, the handle will shape itself into a natural position in an evident manner. If desired, a steel support may be used, or any other stiening means placed between any pair of sockets, or in the handle to prevent the parts from drawing together when weighted down, but While this may be a useful detail, I do not deem it essential within the purview of my invention.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, it Will be seen that I have provided a music roll that is also a binder of the sheets as well as a music roll that may be carried as a book, bag, or roll, and with a removable handle possessing advantageous features. I believe that the adjustability or susceptibility to dierent forms according to the users judgment or circumstances of the case, is an important and highly advantageous feature of my invention, in addition to the fact that the music may be bound together in any desired number of.v sheets, and temporarily bound so that any one or more pieces or sheets may be removed whenever desired.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. A device of the character described, consisting of a flexible cover comprising two members adapted to receive a book or sheet between them, one of said members being provided at its edge with a pair of members of a separable fastener, the other member being also provided near its edge with a pair of members of a separable fastener, and a detachable handle provided with pairs of the complemental members of said fasteners adapted to coact with the fastening members of the cover.
2. A device of the character described, consisting of a flexible cover comprising two members adapted to receive a book or sheet between them, one of said members being provided at its edge with a pair of members of a separable fastener, the other member being also provided near its edge with a pair of members of a separable fastener, and a detachable handle provided with pairs of the complemental members of said separable fasteners adapted to coact with the fastening members of the cover, the fastening members of the handle being farther apart than the corresponding fastening members of the cover, the length of the handle being considered.
3. A device of the character described, consisting of a flexible cover comprising two members adapted to receive a book or sheet between them, one of said members being provided at its outer and inner ends, respectively, with a pair of members of a separable fastener, and a detachable handle provided with complemental members of such fastener adapted to engage with the fastening members of the cover.
4. A device of the character described, consisting of a flexible cover comprising two members adapted to receive a book or sheet between them, one of said members being provided with three pairs of members of a separable fastener, said pairs being located, respectively, at the two ends and at the middle of said cover members, and a detachable handle provided with fastening devices adapted to coact with the fastening devices of the cover.
5. A device of the character described,
consisting of a flexible cover comprising two members provided at their adjoining edges with eyelets designed to receive temporary binding devices, one of said members being provided at its outer end with a pair of sockets, the other member being provided with three pairs of sockets, one pair at its inner end, one pair at its middle, and another pair at its outer end, said last named member being also provided with a iiy and said fly provided with a pair of spring studs, and a detachable handle provided at its ends with transversely extending rows of spring studs adapted to engage the various sockets of the cover members.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
