BINDER FOR STATIONERY SHEETS Filed Nov. 27, 1944 JTTORA/EY-Sf.
Patented Oct. 15, 1946 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application November 27, 1944, Serial No. 565,319 In Great Britain June 6, 1944 1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to binders for stationery sheets to form note books, catalogues or the like, of the type in which the sheets and two cover sheets are bound together by means of rings which engage throu h perforations in the sheets and cover sheets. This invention has for its object a construction which is more convenient in use and in which the b und sheets and the cover sheets have lateral stability.
According to the present invention, the rings are passed throu h perforations in a hinge strip connecting the inner ends of the cover sheets. This strip when the book is closed lies inwardly between the cover sheets. and slots are rovid d in the cover sheets to engage the rin s. The strip connectin the two cover sheets is adapted to fold inwardly between the cover sheets in a V-shaped form and the rin s pass throu h perfora ions in the two s des of the V-shaped strip and through the stationery sheets between the covers.
Referring to the drawing.
Fig re 1 is a face view of a binder constructed ac ording to this invention.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the binder partly open.
Fi ure 3 illustrates the binder opened out fiat and w thout stationery sheets.
Fi ure 4 is a section on line .r-a: of Figure 1, drawn to an enlarged scale.
F gure 5 is an inside view of the binder as shown by Figure 8, but showing stationery sheets in the binder. and
Figure 6 is a face view of a modified form of binder.
According to a convenient embodiment of this invention. the two cover sheets I are formed of cardboard or other suitable stiiT material and the backs are connected by a flexible or hinge strin 2 of strong pa er or other suitable material. The strip connecting each back is creased or grooved at 3 near each end of the cover sheet and also in the centre at 4 and is adapted to fold inwardly in a V-shaped form between the cover sheets, the creasing being s ch that the connecting strip 2 has a natural tendency to fold inwardly in a V- shaped form. Two binding rings 5 each pass through two perforations 6 in the connecting strip which are in register or lie opposite one another when the V-shaped strip is folded inwardlv. and the stationery sheets 9 have perforations 1 therein which are engaged by the rings. The rings 5 before insertion are open at the joint and after being threaded through the connecting lie between the covers and inwardly of the inner end of the cover sheets, as shown by Figure 4.
When the book is closed the rings 5 are protected by the covers so that they will not damage the lining of a pocket, as is the case when the rings 5 lie outside the bound end of the book. As the rings 5 engage the slots 8 in the cover sheets lateral support is given to the rings thereby holding the stationery sheets 9 against undue lateral movement. The connecting or hinge strip 2 also imparts lateral stability at the bound end of the book. When the book is opened, as the rings pass through two perforations in the connecting strip, they are held against undue lateral movement which prevents sloppiness of the stationery sheets. The connecting or hinge strip gives great flexibility at the bound end of the sheets, and the book can be opened, whilst the connecting strip is in V-form, or the book can be opened with the connecting strip 2 pulled out in alignment with the cover sheets I The book can be opened out and folded back with the cover sheets I lying one against the other or the book can be opened out and supported On a tab1e with the covers forming a V-shaped stand and with the stationery sheets on the outside. The slots 8 in the cover sheets which are engaged by the rings tend to hold the book in the closed position. These slots may be straight longitudinal slots III as shown by Figure 6, or the slots may be shaped so that they are narrower at the centre than the thickness of the ring as shown by Figure 3, so that when the book is closed the centre projections Be at the sides of the slot are spring engaged inside the rings to thus hold the book in the closed position.
I claim:
A binder for stationery sheets, comprising two cover sheets of stiff material, a hinge strip foldable at each edge on the cover sheets and flexible at the centre and connecting the inner ends of the cover sheets and arranged to lie inwardly of the cover sheets when the binder is closed. perforations in the hinge strip equidistant from the longitudinal centre. to lie opposite one another when the binder is closed, a binder ring for holding the stationery sheets fixed to the binder by engaging through the two perforations in the hinge strip which permit the hinge strip to open out or fold on itself by the perforations sliding on the ring, and a slot in each cover sheet with the slot registering with the ring in the hinge strip when the binder is closed, such slots having an inward projection at the side for clipping inside the binder ring.
