SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 754,628, dated March 15, 1904.

' Documents, Letters, &c., of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a book-surfaced eXpansible binder and file with an expansible pliable back, having adjustable lids of suitable bookloinders materials so connected and secured together as to provide a simple means whereby the capacity thereof may be increased or decreased, accordingto the number of pamphlets, sheets, leaves, &c., it is desired to keep in a clean and firmly-secured condition within completely-filled covers and close-fitting protecting-back.

The binder is very simple and strong and durable in construction and can be manufactured at a low cost.

In order to comprehend. the invention, ref

erence is made to drawings and specification.

Figure 1 is an interior perspective view of one of the binders open, showing partof the expansible back and bindingclamps with connecting-fastener therefor and hinged attachment thereof to the lids. Figs. 2, 3 present views of the interior side of the lids, entire back, and binding-clamps, showing opening of pocket in which the expansible back'is contained. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the lid A and binding-clamp C, showing arrangement of materials. Fig. 5 is a view of the posterior edge of the lid, partly in section, with pocket and binding-clamp hinged thereto, showing arrangement of parts thereof. Fig. 6 presents one of the binding-clamps, consisting of incasing sleeve and metal interior, the

sleeve, extended, forming hinge, showing the arrangement of parts thereof and locking holes and notches securing the connectingfastener.

The two lids A A and back E are made of any commonly-used bookbinders materials and vary in size according to the contents desired to be protected and bound.

The two binding-clamps B G are made of thin flat metal 0 Fig. 6, or any hard stilf material, about one-half inch in width, securely attached to and completely incased within sleeve a, of binders cloth or pliable leather, which at its posterior edge forms hinges F F by attachment thereof by gluing, pasting, or sewing to the lids A A and back E, which arrangement permits the lids A A to be freely opened, while the binding-clamps firmly secure the contents bound therebetween.

The connecting-fastener D is made of cloth or leather tape, flexible wire, or twine.

The binding-clamp B has holes I) b close to posterior edge thereof and narrow notches b 6 cut at right angles into the anterior edge thereof.

The binding-clamp G has holes 0 0 and 0 a close to posterior and anterior edges thereof and narrow notches c 0 and c 0 out at right angles into the anterior edge thereof.

The pamphlets, &c are prepared by punching holes therein through which to pass the connecting-fastener D. The connecting-fastener D is passed through the hole 6 from the inside side of clamp B and back through the hole 6 thereof and is then adjusted so that its middle part is opposite the securing-notches 6 -6 and is then put down into the notch Z2 and up into notch 6 and thus securing connecting-fastener D from slipping, &c. The free ends of the connecting-fastener I) are passed through the'punched holes of the pamphlets, &c., and then into the holes 0 0 of clamp C, Fig. 1, and back through the holes 0 0 thereof. The clamps B C and the inclosed pamphlets, &c. are then closely'pressed together, and the connecting-fastener D is drawn taut and securely locked by being put into the notches c 0 The free ends of the connecting-fastener D are put into the notches :10 to keep the extra part thereof within the To remove the pamphlets, &c., the connecting-fastener D is slipped out of the notches 0 c, slipped out of notches 0 0 pulled out of holes 0 0* and 0 c and the pamphlets slipped off of the connecting-fastener D. r

The expansible pliable back E is of the same width and slightly shorter than the lid A and is glued, pasted, or sewed thereto. Its

, ed e e Fi 2, is inserted into the opening of the pocket (0, Figs. 3, 4, 5, and slides therein as the contents of the binder vary in thickness.

The pocket 64, Figs. 3, 4, 5, in the lid A is constructed as follows: The sleeve a at its posterior edge is extended, a Fig. 6, and made considerably larger than the surface of the lid A, as shown at a, Fig. 6. Upon the pocket side of the sleeve extended (8 is glued, pasted, or sewed a lining a of the same size as the interior surface of the lid A. The sleeve extended a is placed upon the interior surface of the lid A, part a Fig. i, and the part of the sleeve extended to outside of the edges of the lining a is pulled over the ends and anterior edge of the part (t of the lid A and glued-or pasted to the exterior surface of part at. The exterior finishing part a of the lid A is pulled over the ends and edges as heretofore covered and glued or pasted upon the exposed edge of the sleeve extended a.

An interior finishing-cover a is pasted or glued upon the inner surface of the lid A that is, upon exposed surface of (4*.

- The binding-clamp C is hinged to the lid A, as above described in the description of the pocket (0, its incasing sleeve (0 before mentioned, being extended, a, and made a component part of the lid A, thereby permitting the clamp C to swing freely from the lid A on account of the hinge F made by the cloth or pliable leather of the sleeve extended a being glued, &c., to the lid A, as before described.

The binding-clamp B is incased in sleeve, as C, and secured by gluing, &c., its extended part of the.incasing sleeve to the lid A and the back E, which arrangement gives hinge F, as heretofore described for clamp C.

Having described my invention, I claim- 1. In an expansiblebinder, binding-clamps, lids hinged to said clamps, an expansible back connecting said clamps, each of said clamps comprising a metal plate covered by a sleeve, said sleeve being extended and connected to its respective lid, said clamps being provided with holes for the passage of a connectingfastener and also with locking-notches in the edges thereof.

2. In a temporary binder, the lids having clamps hinged thereto, said clamps having holes therethrough and a plurality of lockingnotches in the edges thereof.
