oHEsTEE G. VAN BUREN, OF PEovo, UTAH.
BINDER FOR LOOSE-LEAF BOOKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 9, 1908.
Application filed. August 20, 1907. Serial No. 389,897.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHESTER G. VAN BU- REN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Provo, in the county of Utah and State of Utah, have invented a new and Improved Binder for Loose Leaf Books, of which the following is a'full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of this invention is to rovide novel details of construction for a boo -binding device, that is specially well adapted for clamping the loose leaves of a note book, sketches, clippings of printed matter, or any loose manuscript in leaf form, between suitable cover boards, in a manner which enables a small or large number of leaves to be quickly and securely bound between the cover boards, and also permits the convenient removal of one or more leaves from the book, as may be desired.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as is hereinafter described and defined in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a pers ective view of an open note book showing eatures of the invention applied thereon; Fig. 2 is an enlarged back edge view of the note book and a rear side view of a novel binding clamp thereon in closed condition; Fig. 3 is a similar view of details to those shown in Fig. 2, but showing said parts in o ened adjustment; Fig. 4 is a plan view of t e leaf clamp shown inFigs. 2 and 3, seen in direction of the arrow as in Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of the back portiori' of the improved book-binding device, showing a multiple folding clamping member applied for secura few leaves between the cover boards.
11 carrying into effect the features of novelty and utility that constitute the improvement, two flat rigid cover boards 10, 11 are provided, having equal dimensions and rectangular contours. Two corresponding transverse edges a, a. of the cover boards 10, 11 are hinged together by adjustable means, which permit the covers to be separated or s aced apart at these transverse edges any egree wlthin the capacity of said hinges; the latter, constituting a dominant feature of the invention, consist of novel details constructed and arranged as follows. Two similar clamping bars 12, 12 are employed, each comprising a flat metal strip of a suitable length, pro ortioned to the width of the cover boar s 10, 11, and said bars having lapped contact are centrally pivoted together as at b, -so that their corresponding ends may be s read apart and folded toward each other, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Near their ends the opposite edges 0 of each clamping bar 12, 12 are sloped, so as to gradually reduce the Width of said bars from oints c thereon to points 0 near the pivot Two similar flattened clamping bands 13, 13 are mounted upon the lapped clam in bars 12, 12 one each side of the pivot l3, t ese bands having such a relative longitudinal width that they will completely fold the bars 12, 12 upon each other when the bands are slid from the points 0 toward and near to the points 0, this resulting from an engagement of the bands 13 with the sloped edges 0 on the clamping bars. At 0 poslte ends of the clam ing bars 12, 12 a ange d is formed on eac one, these similar flanges projecting from the normally lower edges of said ends which are the lowermost ones of the pair of clamping bars. The flanges d, d are preferably embedded in the transverse edge a on the lower cover board 10 and are thereto secured by rivets or other suitable means.
Upon the remaining ends of the clampingbars 12, 12, and which respectively trend outward and upward when said bars are diverged, flanges e, e are formed, which extend above the flanges (Z, (Z. Upon the outer side edge of each flange e an ear 6 is formed, said ears each having a transverse perforation therein.
In the transverse edge a of the normally top, cover board 12 two notches g are formed, wherein the flanges e and ears 6 maybe introduced. A pintle rod it, that is secured in the cover board 11, adjacent to the transverse edge a thereon, is passed through the perforations in the ears 6 when said rod is lnserted through the cover board 11, thus hinging two ends of the lapped and pivoted clam ing bars 12, 12 by their ears 6 upon the cover oard 1 1.
It will be seen that a number of loose leaves A, arranged upon each other and laid upon 'the cover board 10, may be secured thereupon at its edge a. by folding the flanges e, e downu on the rear transverse edges of the leaves 12 and then clamping them thereon by driving the bands 13, 13 toward the ends of the bars 12, 12, it being understood that the forcin secured t flanges e, 6 had been elevated somewhat by an angular divergence of the ends of the clamping bars, as re resented in Fig. 3.
When the s eets A are to be removed from the binder, this may be quickly effected by the bands 13 toward the center of the clamping bars 12 12 and then spreading the ends of the latter apart, which will separate the rear ends of the cover boards 10, 11.
Provision is made fol holding a few sheets of paper or other similar matter in clamped condition between the cover boards 10, 11 to this end a plurality of liner-strips 14 are held connected together and arallel with each other by tapes 14. ormally. the strips 14 are disposed as shown in Fig. 1, being aid u on the upper cover board 11 and hereto by an attachment of the ends of the tapes 14, as shown in said figure. If but a few sheets of paper or the like are to be secured at the ends thereof between the cover boards for their protection, said sheets are arranged in pro er order on the cover board 10 and a suita le number of the strips 14 are placed one on top of another, until a proper thickness of material is afforded, this tier of strips then being seated over the ends of the lapped sheets of paper, and the clamping device is adjusted for clampin the sheets and strips 14 upon the cover boar 10, as has already been fully described.
It is evident that any sheet material within the area of the cover boards 10, 11 may be quickly and securely clamped therebetween at one transverse ed e thereof, thereby affording a temporary inding for printed outtings, sketches, memoranda or other manu-' script matter, which is neat, convenient to adjust and that may be produced at moderate cost.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination with two cover boards,
of two clamping bars lapped crosswise and ivoted together at the1r centers, clasping hands on the clam ing bars, adapted for closing them towar each other edgewise, and means for connecting the ends of' said bars with corresponding ends of the cover boards.
2. The combination with two similar cover boards, of two clampin bars, each flat in the body and having the e es thereof sloped toward the centers of the ars, said bars being lap ed to ether crosswise and pivoted togetiier at t eir centers, a flange on one end of each bar, projected laterally therefrorn'and secured on one end of a coverboard, perforated ears on the remaining ends of the clamping bars, a pintle rod engagin said ears m their perforations and secure upon the rear end of the other cover board, and two clasping bands mounted on the sloped edges of the clamping bars.
3. In a temporary loose leaf binder of the character described, two cover boards, two crossed and pivoted clamping bars secured by the ends thereof upon one cover board and hinged at the remaining ends on the other cover board, and a series of filling stri s that may be placed upon each other an between the cover board at corresponding ends thereof, for pressure on material to be held between the cover boards.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribin witnesses.
CH STER G. VAN BUREN.
Witnesses:
WILLIAM GEORGE TALMAGE, JULIUS O. ANDERSEN.
