OFICE.
HENRY Gr. RAZALL, 0F 1VIILWAUKEE,WISCONSI1\T.
BLANK BOOK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY G. RAZALL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blank Books; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention consists in what is hereinafter particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in claims, its object being to provide simple, economical detachable sheet blankbooks, especially bank-draft registers that are designed to facilitate removal and filing of filled sheets constituting parts of the leaves of the books, these leaves being held in separable binders and replenished from time to time as the sheets become exhausted by separation from binding stubs of said leaves.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents a transverse section, indicated by line 11 in Fig. 2, of a separable binder and detachable .leaf blank-book in accordance with my invention, the thickness of the leaves of the book being exaggerated, and Fig. 2, a plan view of a closed book having a cover of same partly broken away.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, 3, 1, indicate a pair of book-covers one of which has a back-fiange 1, and each cover is provided with a flexible joint 5 that permits of its major portion being turned back to open the book. The cover 3 is provided with preferably angular posts 6 having threaded sockets therein for the engagement of clamping-screws 7 that extend through apertures in the other cover 1, this cover being provided with guide-boxes 8 for the engagement of said posts. The construction and arrangement of parts thus far particularly specified constitute an ordinary temporary binder for leaves to which further reference is had, and the detail of the binder may be indefinitely varied.
To prevent the screws 7 from being detached from the cover 4, each of the same is provided with an upper annular groove 9 engaged by a notched outer plate 10 made fast on said cover.
Each of the leaves in the binder, to'therewith constitute a book, consists of a stud 11 and a sheet 12, the leaf being perforated and slotted between said divisions thereof Specification of Letters Patent Application filed auntie, 1909.

Serial No. 501,940.
as shown at 13 and 14:. each leaf is provided along its longitudinal edge with transverse slits 15 that intersect with openings'in said stud that are cut to match the posts and boxes aforesaid by which they are engaged, similar slits and openings being shown in my Patent No. 631,127 of August 15, 1899. However each leaf may be otherwise punctured according to the particular construction of leaf-retaining devices with which the binder is provided.
The slots 14 of each leaf interrupt the line of perforations 13 therein, and herein shown intersecting each slot midway of same is a transverse slit 16 in the sheet portion 12 of said leaf. Each slit 16 also intersects an The stud 11 of i opening 17 cut in said sheet portion of the leaf, said opening as herein shown being preferably of angular contour and designed to fit a correspondingly shaped post of a filing-binder into which the sheet is transferred when separated from the stub of said leaf by tearing along the intermediate line 13 of perforations. However the slits 16 may be omitted, in which case the slots 14 are unnecessary, the function of said slots being to prevent tearing across of slitted sheets when the same are being separated from the stubs of the leaves for the purpose of filing. If desirable, the stub and sheet portions of each leaf may be provided with series of longitudinal indentations, not shown, but which are disclosed in the patent aforesaid, to provide for a flat lay of the leaf when turned back and to obviate employment of thin cloth binder engaging hinges in connection with said leaf. In practice, the detachable sheet portions of the leaves will be ruled to suit various records, and as the sheets are successively filled they are one by one detached from their stubs and preserved in a filing-binder. All of the sheets having been filled and detached from the stubs of the leaves, the binder for said leaves is separated, said stubs removed and new leaves substituted, one binder serving indefinitely for packs of leaves supplied from time to time as may be necessary, the book as a whole being an economical substi tute for loose leaf books of ordinary construction.
I claim:
l. A blank-book leaf having a line of perforations therein interrupted by slots, whereby it is divided into a stub and a debinder, and said sheet provided with binderpost apertures and slits intersecting said slots and apertures.
2A xblankbook leaf comprising a stub provided with binding-post apertures and transverse slits extending from said apertures to the adjacent longitudinal edge. of the leaf, the remainder of said leaf being a detachable sheet separated from the stub by a line of perforationsinterrupted by slots and provided with binder-post apertures in communication with transverse slits that of themselves communicate with said slots.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee in the county of Milwaukee and State of \Visconsin in the presence of two witnesses.
Vitnesses N. E. OLIPIIANT, GEORGE G. FELBER.
