srncrmcazrron forming para of Letters patera' Nofeoaee'o; dated May 28,1889. I Appliation iiled February 25, 1889. Serial No. 301,019. (No model?) i binder removed'. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of Fig. l, but with the binder in place thereon. Fig. 3 shows the book as in Fig. l, but with the binder in the first stage of its application to the book. Fig. t is like Fig. 3,
Vexcept that it shows the binderat another stage of its application.' Fig. `5 shows the last stage of applying the binder. Fig. 6
vshows the book with the binder in position thereon for use. Figs. 7 and S correspond to Figs. l and 6, respectively, but'show a modification in the book proper, which will be hereinafter fully explained.
My present invention is an improvement in certain respects upon that specified in my pending application for a patent, Serial No. 270,698', filed April 14, 1838, for an improvement in pocket memorandum-books; and it consists in the features of novelty hereinafter described in connection with said drawings and speciiied in the appended claims. Y,
Referring again to said drawings, A rep' sents my improved memorandnni-book as a whole, the leaves of writin g paper being shown at a and the lids or covers at l) l). One or both of said lids may, as shown, be cut transversely near the binder and hinged or connected with textile material, e, pasted thereto; but such cutting and hinging is not part of my present invention, as it is incorporated in my said previous application.
I eut in the edges of the lids and loaves, near one end, the recesses d d, (as also shown in my said former applicatiom) and midway between said recesses and in line therewith I form the slot-like opening e through the lids and leaves.
a To secure the leaves and lids together as a book, I employ the gum-elastic binder f, as in my said former application, and the manner of combining it therewith is as follows, to wit:
One end or bight of the binder is first passed through slot e, andis there confined by pressing it against the lid by the thumb of the 55 hand that supports the book, as. shown at g, Fig. 3. Then theopposite bight or end is by the thumb and finger h of the other hand stretched and carried into the recess d at one edge, as shown at the right of-thebook in 6o said Fig. 3, after which it is carried to the opposite recess, as ati-he left of the book in Fig. 4, when the bight that had been held by Fig. 5. lVi th the binding complete, (that is, when each end or bight of binder f has been carried into both recesses,) as is shown in Fig. 6, it is obvious that the binder not only 7o extends from edge to edge of the-book `on each side thereof, but it passes from each re cess d round through lslot e on' each side of the book, thereby most edeetually securing the lids and leaves together, yet admitting" of their being quieklynnbound and separated whenever it is desired to replace new leaves for those already filled. Y y i In Figs. '7 and 8 the central slot, e, is not, as in the other lign-res, elongated in the transverse direction of the book, but is formed as an open slot, so called, it being cut throngh'to the end of the back, as is clearly shown; and while this modification of the' slot admits a more ready application of ,binder f, (which when fully in place, as shown' in Fig. 2, is in the same position as when the slot is not open,) yet I prefer the form of slot shown in the first six iigures of the drawings.
l. As an improvement in memorandumbooks, the covers and leaves formed with the recesses across the edges thereof and the intermediate slot, e, extending through the book, substantially as specified.
2. In combination with. the book formed with the edge recesses and intermediate slot formed therein, as spccied, the elastic binder f, arranged in said slot and recesses, as specified.
