SAMUEL D. PAGE, OF DES MOINES, IOWA.
TEMPORARY BINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 745,896, dated December 1, 1903.
Application filed April 10, 1903.
T0 a/ZZ whom it may concern,.- Y
Be itknown that LSAMUEL D.PAGE,a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Temporary Binder, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to provide a simple, strong, durable, and convenient means for detachably and securely binding together single sheets of paper, separate folios, and folios permanently bound together, as in pamphlets and magazines, and without perforating any of the paper.
My invention consists in the construction and combination of clasps and levers and covers, as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is atop view of an open book bound by means of the clasps and levers in such a manner that the leaves of the book can be readily removed and interchanged and leaves added thereto or taken therefrom whenever desired without puncturing them. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view showing the book closed. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of a cover that has pockets on its inside faces and folios temporarily bound to the cover. Fig. 4 is a top view of a cover adapted for detachably binding sheets, folios, bills, &c., to-
gethertemporarilyandinterchangeably. Fig.
5 is an enlarged sectional view that shows the preferred form of the lever and manner of pivotally connecting it with a clasp. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view that shows a clasp closed and the lever in its normal position.
The numerals l0 and 12 designate the mating parts of a book-cover, and 13 the exible back that connects them. They may vary in size and material and style of finish as desired.
Serial No. 152.096. (No model.)
and 2. The top portion of the clasp has a longitudinal slot, and a lever 16 is pivotally connected with the lower portion of the clasp andextends through said slot and has shoulders 17, that engage the under face of the slotted portion of the clasp in such a manner that the lever will be normally held down by the I spring force of the clasp as required to allow the clasp to clamp fast leaves and folios placed between its edge portion, as shown in Fig. 2. To separate the mating edges of the clasp, the levers are raised into a perpendicular position, as shown in Fig. 5 and as required to overcome therewith the spring force of the clasp, so that leaves and folios, bound pamphlets, magazines, dac., can be put in and taken out at pleasure. It is obvious the lever can be formed and fulcrumed to the clasp advantageously as shown in Fig. 5, but may be connected with the clasp in any other suitable wayto accomplish its'purpose in opening and closing the clasp. It is also obvious the clasp may he formed of a single piece, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5, or reinforced by an auxiliary clasp 18, as shown in Fig. 3.
Having thus described the purpose of my invention and its construction, the practical operation and utility thereof will be readily understood by persons familiar with the art to which it pertains, and
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A clasp for a temporary binder made of a single piece of sheet metal bent double at its central portion, a slot extended longitudinally in its upper portion and a lever pivoted to its lower portion to extend through the slot and provided with shoulders to engage the bottom face of the upper portion of the clasp, to operate in the manner set forth for the purposes stated.
2. In a temporary bin-der, a lever having lateral extensions at its lower end and shoulders at its central portion,in combination with a spring-clasp made of a single piece of sheet metal bent double at its longitudinal center and provided with a slot in its upper portion and with bearings in its lower portion to admit the lateral extensions at the lower end of the lever, for the purposes stated.
IOO
3. A clasp for a temporary binder made of in combination with a cover, to operate in the a single piece of sheet metal bent double at lmanner set forth for the purposes stated. its central portion, a slot extended longitudinally in its upper portion and a, lever pivoted 5 to its lower portion to extend through the slot and provided with shoulders to engage the bottom face of the upper portion of the clasp,
