Be it known that I, MAX M. CoHN, a citin zen of the United States, residing in the city and 'county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Loose Leaves for Temporary Binders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to leaves for loose leaf ledgers and the like, using temporary binders.

Considerable difficulty is experienced with loose leaf bindery systems in putting in and taking out the sheets, particularly where a bunch of sheets or leaves are vto be taken out at one time, or where a sheet lying or belonging in the middle ofthe pack is to be gotten at or put back.

In many systems of bookkeeping the ledgers are opened up each day, and the sheets of those accounts having changes are removed, the entries made and the sheets replaced. This constant taking out and putting back is hard on the sheets as they are ordinarily constructed, and as a result the edges and corners of the slots which receive the binding parts become broken and torn and the sheet has to be copied and replaced, or else the book assumes an uneven, untidy appearance.

My object is to make a sheet with slots of peculiar construction to engage the binding posts, whereby a sheet is easily put in or taken out without damaging it, the insertion and removal of the sheet being eifected by a pivotal movement of the sheet about one of the posts as a fulcrum.

The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which* Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my invention. Figs. 2 & 3 are modifications of the same.

Referring to Fig. 1 A represents a sheet embodying my invention which latter resides in making the inwardly convergent curved slots 2 having a width equal to or greater than the diameter of their respective posts 3 of the binder 4 into which they go. The inward inclination of the slots and the making them wide open as shown constitute essential features of the invention.

In operation to insert into the binder: one or any number of sheets with their slots in register, are placed with one post 3, for example the one nearest the operator, in the nearmost slot 2. Then the leaf or leaves are turned on this post as a pivot to carry the upper slot toward the other post. By lifting up on or bending upward the upper corner of the leaf or leaves, the upper slot is brought into register with the upper post so that the latter fits nicely into the upper slot and finally abuts against the end of the slot, without any crinkling or buckling of the sheet around either slot as occurs where a slot narrower than the post is used. All the time that the sheet is being turned backward on the lower post as a pivot it is held in snug engagement with the latter behind the shoulder 5. As soon as the upper post strikes the end of the upper slot, the sheet is allowed to straighten whereupon the rear abutment or shoulder 5 of the upper slot comes down behind its post and the sheet is securely held in place. At the same time by pivoting the sheet on one post and slightly lifting on the opposite corner of the sheet and bending it, in the manner just described, the sheet is carried out of 0r into position with the other post without the slightest difficulty.

In Fig. 2 I have shown a modification adapting the invention to large or heavy leaves requiring three or more binding posts. In this case there is the same principle embodied: the lower diagonal slot 2a being the fulcrum slot and the oppositely inclined slots 2b converging toward slot 2a and being adapted for engagement or disengagement with their respective binding posts on the proper lifting and pivoting of the sheet.

In Fig. 3 is shown a further modification in which I may form one or more curved slots in the back of the sheet, each equal in width to or Wider than, the diameter of the binding posts, and notch or slot either the top or bottom edge, or both the top and bottom edges of the sheet as shown. If the lower edge of the sheet is notched, the notch 2C is also preferably concentric with the post 7 which fits the lower notch. The post 8 for the upper notch may or may not be removable. If the construction shown is employed of notching the upper and lower edges of the sheet then the posts 7-8 are preferably removable because it enables a sheet or any number of sheets together, any where in the binder to be quickly taken out or put in. It is-not essential however for either post to be removable; because by loosening the binder,
