C. M. OARNA HAN.
PORTFOLIO.
Patented June 20, 1893. V
To all whom, it nun concern.-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES M. CARNAHAN, OF NEWPORT, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR TO THE GLOBE COMPANY, OF CINCINNATL-OIIIO.
PORTFOLIO.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 499,906, dated June 20, 1893.
I Application filed November 21, 1892. Serial No. 452,637. (No model.)
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. CARNA- HAN, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Newport, Campbell county, State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portfolios,of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof, in which is illustrated, in perspective, a portfolio embodying my invention.
My improved portfolio is designed more especially for office use, as a convenient and efficient means for keeping miscellaneous papers assorted and in position for ready reference at any time.
Heretofore portfolios have been constructed with two covers joined to a flexible but nonexpansible back, the papers being placed therein promiscuously; and, in the event of any great quantity of papers being placed between the covers, the latter become greatly spread apart at their outer edges, rendering the portfolio quite bulky and inconvenient to handle and at the same time endangering the loss of its contents. 4
My improved portfolio consists of the covers A joined at their rear edges to an expansible back, with a number of partitions B joined to said expansible back.
In the construction of my improved portfolio it is preferred thatthe partitions B shall form the expansible back; and, with this object in view, said partitions are formed of suitable flexible material, (preferably tough paper) cutinto sheets, each sheetbeing creased at the point I) and folded upon itself, forming two leaves or portions 12 Oneside of the sheets, adjacent to the covers, is attached thereto, the intervening creased and folded sheets being attached to each other at a point a forward from their creased portions 1), as shown. The two leaves of adjacent sheets are preferably glued together forward from their intersecting points a, thus forming the partitions B of a double thickness of material. In order to more securely connect. the
leaves 11*, at their intersecting points a, it is preferred to secure them together with an .eye-
let at top and bottom; but, any other suitable means may be employed for making this connection.
In order to add beauty and strength to the portfolio, it is preferred to reinforce the outer face of the back (composed of the leaves 12 with suitable colored cloth or leather.
The object of the partitions B, is to separate the contents for ready reference; and, to facilitate in accomplishing this object, the Outer edge of each partition is provided with an index 0, as shown, which latter may be provided with any desired designating mark or Wording, to indicate the character of the contents between each partition. In the drawing, the partitions are shown somewhat separated and the back proportionately expanded, in order to fully illustrate the invention. When devoid of any contents, the partitions will lie close together in a compact form; and, when in this state, a great number of portfolios may be packed for shipment in a com paratively small space.
The advantages of my improved portfolio are apparent, affording as it does a convenient temporary file for various office papers, which may be assorted and arranged under properly indexed heads in such a manner that any desired paper may be referred to in a moments time. The expansible back, in connection with the partitions, is another valuable feature, providing as it does for a variation in the quantity of the filed contents by which the covers are kept equi-distant apart at their front and rear edges, at all times, thus affording additional security to the contents.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A portfolio comprising covers A connected at their rear edges to an expansible back consisting of leaves 19 creased and folded as shown, and partitions B connected at the intersecting points a of said leaves which form the expansible back, substantially as set forth.
2. A portfolio comprising the covers A and partitions B, thelatter consisting of two thicknesses of flexible material glued or secured together for a greater portion of their depth, folded as shown, and glued together at their the rear portions of said partitions being sepaforward portions to form the partitions B, as rated into two portions or leaves I?) and atset forth.
tached to said covers substantially as set forth. CHARLES M. OARNAHAN. 5 3. A portfolio comprising the covers A Witnesses:
joined at rear to a flexible expansible back, H. (l'GEISER,
the latter consisting of leaves I) creased and O. M. HILL.
