ALBUM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3, 1907.
Application filed May 31. 1907. Serial No. 376,469.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, HYMAN UFFNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at 432 East Eighty-ninth street, New York city, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Albums, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to improve the product and cheapen the cost of manufacture of albums such as are adapted for the insertion of postal cards, photographs and the like. Such albums, in order to cause them to present a good appearance when filled with cards or the like, have to be made with filling pieces between the leaves at the bound edge of the book to hold them apart so that the book may accommodate the inserted matter. This may be done and is done by pasting filling pieces to the individual sheets and afterwards stitching therethrough, but such means are expensive and do not always result in getting the edges to register properly, often necessitating trimming of the edges after sewing.
By my invention I do away with all asting and provide leaves which carry the ling pieces which are bent out of the leaves themselves, accurate in position and hence all leaves may be gathered and stitched to form a book which will require no trimming.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a sheet of paper to form two leaves of an album scored and cut; Fig. 2 is a bottom edge view thereof; Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing one manner of folding a sheet; Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing my preferred manner of folding; Fig. 5 is an end view showing part of a bound album supplied with leaves and their filling pieces according to my invention.
The blank which is to form the leaves 1 and 2 is preferably first given preliminary creases to insure accuracy in the meeting of the edges to avoid trimming, but this is not essential in all cases. At the same time if desired the cuts 9 to retain the cards-may be desired. 1
In my preferred constructions shown in the drawings, a center crease 6 and two creases 7 and 8 on each side of the center are formed, making five creases at the center preferably equi-distant from each other. At a distance from this set of creases I locate other creases 3, 4 and 5 which as shown in Fig. 5 serve to make the leaf flexible so that the book will open fiat. There are two ways in which I may fold these sheets on the lines of the creases, 6, 7 and 8. One way is shown in Fig. 3 where the creases are used in forming folds of four thicknesses between the leaves 1 and 2. This I prefer to use as the first front set of leaves and filling pieces of the book, though it may be so used throughout. The second way is illustrated in Fig. 4 where the folds are made upon each other on the outside of the two leaves which are parallel and face to face with each other and in contact. This I prefer as the folding is more simple.
When sets of leaves such. as shown either in Figs. 3 and 4 or in both of them are folded, they are placed on each other with their edges in register and punched and sewed with a cord 14 as is usual. Strips 10 also sewed to the book by the cords 14 serve to unite the leaves to the cover 15. may be pasted to the back of the sets of leaves as shown in Fig. 5.
What I claim is z- An improved album composed of sheets, folded into leaves, integral filling pieces formed out of the sheet by folding portions of it upon itself, the filling pieces adjacent to the front cover lying between two leaves forming four thicknesses, and other filling pieces folded-out of the centers of sheets, which in the book each compose two leaves, said two leaves when thus folded lying in contact with each other face to face, the folded filling pieces being of four thicknesses and entirely on one side of the two leaves out of which it is folded.
Signed at New York city this 20th day of May 1907.
HYMAN UFFNER.
