Description

PATENTED APR. 23
J. AIMUDD. SEGTIONAL ALBUM.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 30. 1906.
' UNTTE JOHN ALEXIS MUDD, OF UNITED STATES NAVY.
SECTIONAL ALBUM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 23, 1907.
Application filed June30, 1906. Serial No. 824,228.
T0 at whon'z it may concern:
Be it known that I, JouN ALnxrs Mum), a citizen of the United States, of the United States Navy, and a pay-inspector in the United States Navy, stationed at navy-yard, Portsmouth, New Il aimishire have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Albums; and I do hereby declare the following to be aiull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in albums for photographs, postal cards, stamps, scrap books, or the like, and it consists in providing an album built up of a series of independent detachable signatures which are conveniently assembled and taken apart when desired, and in which the album may be "built up as the collection contained therein is increased.
' My invention will be understood by reiterence to the accompanying drawings, which for the purpose of illustration show a practical embodiment of the invention and in which the same parts are indicated by the same letters throughout the several views.
Figure l is a perspective view of an improved. album composcd of four separate signatures or album sections bound. together. Fig. 2 is an end view on an exaggerated scale of a similar album composed of three signatures or album sections connected together in a single structure, parts being broken away and the pocket sections being shown greatly enlarged for the purpose of illustration. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of one of the album sections adapted to be assembled into the album, partly open. Fig. 4 is a detail, showing in perspective one of the pocket leaves or binders used in connecting two of the album sections together. Fig. 5 is a detail, showing the album cover before any oil the album sections are inserted, parts being shown in section.
A represents the cover 01 the album which is made entirely separate from the sections adapted to be contained therein. This cover contains the usual front and back flaps or covers, which are prel oralilyprovhled with pock ets a and which are connected by the flexible back a so folded as to allow the album to be built up to the desired thickness by the addi tion of fresh sections, and at the same time presenting a neat appearance, irrespective of the number 01' sections that may be contained therein.
Brepresents one of the sections which has a flexible back I)" preferably made or strong thin paper, with the leaves slightly tapered along their edge as at b Fig. 3, to slip into the pocket binders 1). Connected to the flexible covers I)", as by stitching, are a plurality of leaves I) made of suitable material for pasting on the photographs, postal cards, or the like. One of these leaves may be cut away as at If for convenience in connecting thereto the pocket binder b. This pocket binder may be connected to the part b by a suitable strip which may be provided with a weakened line so that the pocket binder maybe readily detached and drawn out when desired. These strips b may also be employed to more firmly secure the pocket binder b in position over the adjacent outer leaves I)" of the sections, for it is obvious from Fig. 2 that if desired the strips I), which form a part of the signatures or sections, maybe pasted to the inner face oi the pocket binder.
In use, one section B maybe initially bound in the cover A, by inserting the end tapered leaves 1) into the pocket sections a, it being understood that they are loosely set therein and are held in position by extending substantially to the outer end of the pocket. The back of the cover a will then be folded in a substantially collapsed position.
After the leaves of the single section have been filled up and additional room is desired in the album for further pictures, the pocket binder b is detached. from another section, and the end leaf 1) of the bound section is then withdrawn from its pocket (1/, and the end leaf 1)" of the new section is placed thcrcin. Then the end leaves I)" of the two sections lic adj acont to each other in a position to receive the binding pocket I), which, to gcthcr with the pockets a, lirmly hold the two sections within the cover. At the'same time it will be observed that the pocket member I) does not only act as a binder for holding the adjacent leaves ol the two sections together, but also serves asa leaf itself on which pictures may be aflixed. In the drawings, especially in Fig. 2, thispocket binder l) is shown greatly enlarged for the purpose of illustration, but in commercial use it is substantially the same thickness as the leaves of the section, or sufficient to receive the thin outer leaves b forming the back of the section.
It will be readily apparent from Fig. 2, that any additional number of sections may be inserted, and for each section inserted the flexible back a of the cover proper is of course distended, as shown for instance in Fig. 2, but in all positions is of a neat appearance. Thusit will be seen that each section or signature is a unit of a sectional album, and the photographs or the like may be pasted on the various leaves I), as desired, and it will also be seen that the pockets (1 of the cover 'will serve as a convenient place for keeping unmounted pictures C, it being understood, of course, that the pocket a is made of a suitable flexible material.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is i 1. A sectional album comprising a plurality of album sections, each having a plurality of leaves, in combinationwith me ans securing together the adjacent outer leaves of said sections, comprising a member longitudinally circumscrioing said adjacent outer leaves, substantially as described.
2. A sectional album comprising a plurality of associated album sections, each having a plurality of leaves in combination with means securing together the adjacent outer leaves of said sections, comprising a pocket member enveloping said adjacent outer leaves, and said pocket member forming with the leaves of the sections a leaf of the album, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a cover having a folding back, of a plurality of independent album sections contained within. said cover,
I I I 1 means for securing the ad acent leaves of each pair of sections together, and means for securing the outer leaves of the end sections J respectively to the front and back of said cover, the Whole constructed and operating to form a complete album of varying capacity built up of detachably connected i11(lependent album sections, substantially as described.
4. In a sectional album, the combination with a cover provided with pockets extending along the inside face of the back and front thereof, of a plurality of album sections disposed within said cover, and means securing the adjacent leaves of each pair of said sections together, the outer leaf of the end sections being'inserted within its respective pocket, substantially as described.
5. In a sectional album, the combination with a cover having its back and front foldably connected together and said back and front being each provided with a pocket extending along the inner face thereof, of a plurality of album sections contained within said cover, the outer leaf of each end section being inserted within its respective pocket, and means detachably securing the adjacent leaves of each pair of said sections together, comprising a sliding pocket member enveloping said adjacent leaves, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN ALEXIS MUDD.
