einolue noone.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 641,211, dated January 9, 1900. Application filed July 31,1899. Serial No. 725,676. (No specimens.)
subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residllO ing at 17 Seaside, Eastbourne, in the county of Sussex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binding Books, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide new and improved means for binding or connecting the leaves of books, pamphlets, and v the like whereby wire and thread fastenings are avoided and each leaf is secured in such manner that the book or pamphlet can be opened and spread flat at any point Without breaking or tearing. V
For the purpose of my invention l stamp and sever a portion of each or each alternate leaf with, say, a dovetail shape of cutting near the back edge, terminating the end slits at the creasing part, so that the stampedy loose portion formsa kind offlap capable of being pushedoutwardly, which l then glue or paste together to form a section-41. e. four or more double leaves. Thus any number of sections can be connected to constitute a pamphlet or book ready for the reception of the cover without any sewing or stitching, each leaf being securely held and the pamphlet being opened out flat for reading or other purpose. I have referred to each leaf as being so stamped orprepared to `form the flaps; butthe stamping may bein one leaf only of a double leaf, and when the flaps of several of such sections of double leaves are prepared l prefer that the stampings be made at two or more different partsv in the series, so the bulk of flaps are arranged at different parts'of the back, and thus obviate an excess of bulginess at any one part. Some of the stamped slits may be only at the middle of the creasing-line and others can be stamped near the top and bottom, respectively, or at top or at bottom only, the length of the slit insuring the absolute connection of all the leaves of which the pamphlet or book is composed. The flaps when cemented in series may have a cloth-back liner glued to them to give the back a neat appearance previous to the covers being applied.
My invention will be understood by the aid of the annexed drawings.
Figure l is a face view of a single leaf of paper with three dovetailed shapes of cuts from which aps are formed when folded back for attachment to corresponding flaps of other sheets orleaves of paper; Fig. 2, acorresponding view of a single leaf or sheet of paper or other material in Whicn the cutting of the flaps is reversed, the dotted lines, as in Fig. 1, showing the fold-back flaps. Figs. 3 and 4 show the sheets represented at Figs. l and 2, respectively, with theflaps folded back-and exposing the gaps or spaces fromwhich the flaps have been removed by the back-folding operation Fig. 5, a perspective view of a double or folded 'sheet of paper from either leaf of which the flaps may be cut or partly from one leaf and partly from the other, so that when such flaps are folded back the several flaps of the several leaves can be glued or pasted to one another to connect the several insets or sections of which tho pamphlet or book is to be composed. v
The several letters of reference apply to all the figures.
According to Fig. 1, (the dovetail cut through the paper A,) the flap B has `its narrowed part next the edge O of the paper. Consequently the wider portions D D of the flaps B are ready when folded to appear beyond the edge to be pasted or glued to corresponding or other flaps of the adjoining sheet, leaf, or piece'of paper, and so on, determined by the thickness of the pamphlet or book.'-
Referring to Fig. 2, the flap B has its widest part D D next the edge O of the paper A, and its narrowed edge E E is farthest from the edge. By this means less glue or paste at the fold-back portion of the flap Bl would be required.
The manner of cutting and forming the flaps from single leaves, as described and shown, somewhat thickens the back of the pamphlet or book when made up or bound, because a portion of each flap lies on the leaf; but by entting and forming the flap from a foldable or doubleleaf the cutis from the foldingcrease F and the flap forms 'an extension therefrom, which flaps in quantity and glued or pasted IOO together from dierent parts in the height of the book are rolled or clustered between the back of the book and the back of the binding and not observable -when the binding is completed.
p What I claim, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A bound book or pamphlet having the leaves slitted at the back portions to form flaps integral therewith which are folded outwardly therefrom and united toA one another, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. A bound book or pamphlet having the leaves slitted at their back portions to form foldable flaps integral therewith which are folded outwardly and cemented to one an` other, substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. A bound book or pamphlet having doubled leaves-slitted at their folding-lines to form aps integral therewith which are folded outwardly at said folding-lines and secured to one another, substantially as and for the purposes described.
4. A bound book or pamphlet having leaves slitted at their back portions to form groups of superimposed flaps integral with the leaves which are folded outwardly and the flaps of each group cemented to one another, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witl nesses.
