JESSE CLARE CRAWFORD, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA. I
INDEXING, MARKING, AND BINDING DEVICE.
Application filed May 24, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jnssn CLARE CRAW- FORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Indexing, Marking, and Binding Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view showing one form of my invention applied to a piece of sheet music;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line IIII of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the blank from which the indexing and binding tag of Figs. 1 and 2 is formed;
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a blank from which another form of my invention is made;
Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the device made from the blank of Fig, 4;
Fig. 6 is an edge view of another form of device;
Fig. 7 is a plan view partly broken away showing the device of Fig. 6 applied to a piece of sheet music;
Fig. 8 is a plan view showing the blank from which the device of Fig. 6 is formed;
Figs. 9 and 10 are edge views showing two other forms of device;
Figs. 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 are plan views showing still other forms of my invention; Fig. 14 showing the device from which the device of Fig. 13 is made, and Fig. 17 showing the manner in which the tab or tag of Fig. 16 is formed.
My invention has relation to a combined indexing, marking and binding device for loose sheets, such as pieces of sheet music. In the usual form, sheet music consists of a cover having one or more loose sheets slipped therein. The pieces of music are usually kept in loose piles in confusion, and it is not only ditficult to find the desired piece quickly, but frequently, owing to the fact that the sheets containing the music are not secured in any way to the cover, one or more sheets are missing when the desired piece of music is found.
My invention is more particularly designed to provide simple and convenient means whereby the sheets of music may be permanently attached to the cover, the at Specification of Letters Patent.

to other loose sheet folders or binders, also to books, pamphlets, magazines, envelops for phonograph records, etc.
Referringfirst to that form of my invention shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the numeral 2 designates the cover portion of a piece of sheet music, and 3 the contained sheets of music. In accordance with my invention, I provide a combined binding and indexing tab ortag. This tab or tag in the form shown in these figures consists of the two strip or tongue portions 1, which extend through a slit cut in the back edge fold of the cover, and are gummed to opposite sides of the sheet 3, as shown in Fig. 2, or it may be to different sheets. The two strips or tongues 4.- are connected by the two disk portions 5, which are folded upon each other in the manner shown and which are adapted to contain suitable indexing notations, such as a name, or number or both, composers names, or other data printed Or otherwise applied thereto.
The strips or tongues 1 may also be folded in the dotted lines indicated at 6, to form the binding and reinforcing lips 7, embracing the rear edge portion of the cover and gummed or otherwise secured thereto.
One Or more of these tabs or tags may be applied to the piece of music. In addition to the indexing data with which they are provided, they may also be made in different colors, each color indicating some particular class of music. The portions 5 of the-tabs or tags project sni'liciently when arranged in the manner shown in these ligures, sothat they can be readily seen and their notations recognized.
In the form of my invention shown in Figs. 4L and 5, the tag is made from the blank 8 of Fig. 4c, "folded on the dotted line 8, the portions 9 forming short tongues which extend through the slit in the back edge of the cover, and are gummed or pasted to the sheet or sheets which they are to secure. The two tongues may be pasted on opposite sides of the same sheet or to the sides of two different sheets.
In the form of my invention shown in Figs. 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10, the tabs or tags are of the general form of those shown in Figs.
1 and 2, but instead of having the two disk portions 5, they have four connecting disk portions 10. These four disk portions may be folded together in the manner shown in Fig. 6, so as to form a tag portion 11 of four thicknesses with the reinforcing and binding portions 7 similar to the portions 7, before described, and the two projecting tongue portions 4:, similar to the portions 4 in the first described form. Any number of these disk portions may be provided, as may be desired.
Instead of allowing the tag portion 11 to project from the edge of the piece of music, it may be folded over upon the cover, as in dicated at the upper portion of Fig. 7, and may be pasted thereto, if desired. Instead of making a double fold of the four disk portions 10, a single fold may be made, as indicated at the lower portion of Fig. 7. Fig. 9 shows in detail the device as applied at the upper portion of Fig. 7. and Fig. 10 is a similar detail view of the device as shown at the lower portion of Fig. 7.
Fig. 11 shows another form of the tab or tag in which the blank is split, as shown at 12, to form two tongues which can be in sorted through the slot in the back of the cover and attached either to opposite sides of the same sheet or to the sides of two different sheets. Fig. 12 shows another form of this split blank, having an oblong tag or indexing portion 13.
The form shown in Figs. 13 and 14 is adapted to provide a larger number of tongues, whereby a greater number of loose sheets may be secured. The blank is shown in Fig. 14, and the finished tab in Fig. 13. The blank is of general H-shape with the four cuts or slits 14, these cuts or slits par tially dividing each vertical leg of the H into three parts. The connecting portion 15 of the blank is adapted to be folded. on the central dotted line 16, and has the bendable oppositely projecting tongues at 17. The blank is folded upon itself into the form shown in Fig. 13, and the tongues 17 can be bent over on the dotted lines 18 to enable the portion 19 to be inserted through the slot in the cover back after the tongue portions have been pasted to the sheet. This form of the device pro vides six tongues which may be secured to as many different sheets or to opposite sides of three sheets.
In the form shown in Fig. 15, the tab or tag has a reinforcing portion 20 of somewhat different form. This form of reinforce may be employed. with. any of the other forms which I have shown, as desired.
In the form shown in Figs. 16 and 17, the
tabs or tags instead of being formed sepa- "ately and secured to the sheets to be bound may be formed as integral parts thereof, being in the nature of projections 21 from the edges of the sheet. These projections are foldable on the dotted lines 2222, to enable them to be slipped through the slits of the cover back. They may then be lifted, projecting as shown in the upper portion of Fig. 16, or may be folded back over the cover, as shown in the lower portion of said figure.
The forms of my invention which I' have herein shown and described are illustrative only, and it will be obvious that the tabs or tags may be formed in various other ways within the spirit and scope of my invention, as defined in the appended claims. Instead of attaching by gunnning or pasting, as herein described, any other suitable attaching means may be employed, such as rivets, eyelets or clen ches.
I claim:
1. A. combined indexing and binding de-- vice for a loose sheet within a folded cover, comprising a tab having a. binding portion. and a tongue extending therefrom said tongue being attached to the sheet and extending through a slot in the cover, the binding portion being arranged to secure the sheet to the cover and also to form an in dexing portion at the exterior of the cover; substantially as described.
2. A combined indexing and binding de vice for a loose sheet within a folded cover, comprising a tab having a foldable binding portion and a plurality of tongues extending therefrom, said tongues being attached to the sheet and extending through a slot in the cover, the binding portion being folded and secured to the cover to act as a reinforce and also to form. an indexing portion at the exterior of the cover; substantially as described,
3. A combined indexing and binding device for a plurality of loose sheets within a folded cover. comprising a tab having a binding portion extending through a slot in the cover and a plurality of tongues extending therefrom. each of said loose sheets being connected to a tongue, the binding portion being arranged to secure the sheets to the cover, and also to form an indexing portion at the exterior of the cover. substanti ally as described.
In. testimony whereof. I have hereunto set my hand.
JESSE CLARE CRAJVFORD.
