HENRY F. JOHNSON, OF BRISTOW, STATE OF OKLAHOMA.
DETACHABLE-LEAF CHECK AND PASS BOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21, 1908.
Application filed July 6. 1907. Serial No. 382.512.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY F. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bristow, Oklahoma, have invented certain Improvements in Detachable Leaf Check and Pass Books and I hereby certify and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates'to a detachable leaf check book in combination with the ordinary bank pass book, which may be used to combine the check book and pass book into one book and as onepass book commonly outlasts several check books, my invention provides for the insertion of a fresh tablet of checks when the supply of the first tablet is exhausted.
The invention is comprised essentially in providing the ordinary pass book with a tablet of checks flexibly attached thereto, the said tablet being provided with suitable fasteners, whereby the sheets are removably bound or attached to the cover of the pass book. It also consists in the various details of the binder, all of which will be hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan View of my improved check and pass book, Fig. 2 is the same showing the book open to the check tablet, Fig. 3 is a detail view of the binding device, Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the same, Fig. 5 is a detail end view of the book in a closed position.
In the construction of my improved check and pass book, I take the ordinary bank pass book, provided with a light flexible cover AB, in which the leaves of the book are stitched to a cloth back strip D, and this back strip pasted to the cover along the line of thecen tral longitudinal fold and by raising that portion of the cloth back strip which is attached to the back cover of the book, the
flexible binding strip E, made of brass or other metal, is inserted beneath the back strip, the extremities of said binding strip F being bent at right angles to the strip proper and piercing the back strip at points equally distant from the top and bottom edges of the cover. The back strip is then smoothly gummed to its place and the sharpened tips G of the binding strips E are inserted in horizontally disposed slits H in a tablet of checks L, attached to their stubs K, the size of the combined check and stub being commensurate with the page of the pass book. When the tablet is thus attached to the binding strip, the flexible ends F of said strip are bent, preferably in a direction opposite to the adjacent end of the book cover, by which means, the check tablet is held firmly in its position. Checks may be detached from such a book and the usual entries re corded on the stubs, a new tablet may be readily inserted on the fasteners when the checks from one tablet are exhausted and this may be accomplished by raising the flexible points F and closing over the new tablet when in place. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is A book comprising two covers, a flexible connection between the covers, a back strip, a seam joining the book to the back strip, a pad on one of the covers, a fastening device securing the pad to the cover and extending in a line parallel to the seam and at a point near but outside the flexible connection.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. HENRY F. JOHNSON.
