COMBINED BOOK AND INDEX.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,208, dated July 29, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALFRED J. NEWBURY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city, county, and State of New York, have in-` vented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Book and Index, and the following is declared to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

Indexes have heretoforebeen combined with letter-copying books and account-books, such indexes being either bound in with the leaves of the book or connected to the inner face of the back cover, or removably connected by means of a pocket into which one returned end of the Hap of the index was received.

My invention relates to a combined book and index; and it consists in the particular manner in which the index is connected to the book, and in carrying out my invention I provide a strip of card-board `longitudinally slotted and fastened in part upon the inside of the back cover of a copying-book or account-book, and an index having a ap or strong fly-leaf with a tu rned-over edge adapted to be connected to this slotted card-board, and, if desired, to be pasted to the same so long as the index is available, but which can be separated when it is desired to employ a new index, this being done without destroying the slotted strip of board which remained attached to the cover to receive the end of the new index.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book with index attached according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the index and book cover, and Fig. 3 is a plan View of the slotted board.

The book is composed of the back a., front cover b, back cover c, and leaves d, and is of usual construction. The index-book is composed of the leaves e, with lettered edges, as usual. The front and back covers are preferably of heavy paper or similar material, or one cover alone may be of heavy material, andthe flap or fly-leaf is a continuation of one cover at one edge.

In the drawings I have shown the portions ff', of heavy paper, secured to the back of the index and as lying together when folded, and when opened out for use the portion f forms the back cover to the index beneath it, and when the index is opened or turned over the portion f formsthe other cover to the same. The portion or leaf f is extended at one edge to form a lap or strong iiy-leaf g, and the part h, as a continuation of said leaf, is folded over upon it and is of nearly the same width. The folds 1 2 3 of the parts f, f', g, and 7L are strengthened by muslin, so that they will not easily break, and the parts g h are shorter than the part f so that shoulders are formed at 4 5. The strip i is preferably composed of card-board surfaced on one side with muslin, and the same is longitudinally slotted at 6, 7, S, and 9, forming the parts or strips 10, 11, 12,13, and 14. The parts 10, 1l, and 12 are to be permanently secured to the inside of the back cover near the outer edge, leaving the parts 13 and 14 free, and I prefer to secure this strip i with the muslin side uppermost.

The index is connected to the book by slipping the parts g and h beneath the loose parts 13 and 14 up to the sh0ulders4 5 and turning over the part 7L upon g and tucking its outer edge beneath the part 14. In this way the parts are securely connected. It will be noticed that the part g in Width is equal to the distance across between the outer edges of the parts 13 and 14, so that a close lit is insured. When the index is opened out from the book, the pull and strain are taken at the fold 3 against the edge of the part 13, and the latter, being muslin-surfaced, is strong and will not readily tear or become injured. I prefer to employ a line of adhesive material on the upper side of the part L and along the edge beneath part 14 to unite said part h permanently to the strip i. However, should it be desirable to connect another index to the book, a thin blade of metal can be inserted beneath the part 14 over the iiy-leaf 7L to sever this line of union, so as to remove the index.

I do not limit myself to connecting the strip t' tothe inside of the back cover near the outer edge, as shown, as the same maybe connected to the inside of the front cover or to the inside of either cover, either horizontally or ver tically, in such manner that the index will open out downwardly or upwardly from the book at right angles thereto or from the side, as shown.

The combination, with a book, of a slotted strip t', composed of card-board with an uppermost faoingof muslin and connected to the inside of the book-cover, an index-book formed as aoontinuation to one leaf of the cover,'a`turnedover portion 7L, the continuation of said fly-leaf to engage the slotted strip in securing` the index, substantially as speciied. v

The combination, with a book, of a slotted strip i, composed of Card-board with an uppermost facing ot m uslin and connected to the inside of the book-cover, an index-book having,` a oover of heavy material, a ily-leaf g, and turned-over portion h, integral with the Cover and having the t'old strengthened with muslin and provided Wit-h shoulders at 4f 5, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

4.. The combination, With a book and an index-book having a Cover of heavy material and folded engaging ily-leaves, of a strip i of muslin-faoed card-board slotted at 6, 7, 8, and 9, dividing` the strip into portions 10, 11, l2, 13, and 14, the portions lO, 1l, and l2 being adapted to be secured to the inside of then ALFRED J. NEVBURY.
