Description

(N0 I ModeI.)
R. M. RIGBY.
COMBINED BOOK AND INDEX. No. 434,724. I Patented Aug. 19, 1890.
* UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE,
ROBERT M. RIGBY, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
COMBINED BOOK AND INTDEX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,724, dated August 19, 1890.
Application filed November 27, 1889- Serial No. 331,763- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
citizen of the United States, and a resident of.
Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Books andIndexes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a combined book and'index, in which the index is formed independent of the book and is so connected therewith as to enable it to be extended or withdrawn from within the book, so that both the index and the book may be referred to simultaneously and the leaves of each be turned simultaneously without interfering with or overlapping each other, and when not in use be confined between the covers of the books, so as to preserve them and prevent them from being injured or damaged.
Heretofore a combined book and index has been constructed, the book being provided with a leaf free of the book-cover to its rear edge and the index provided with a leaf or cover the free edge of which is flexibly united to the free edge of said leaf, whereby the index is free of the book-cover and may be inserted and confined between the book cover and leaf with the front edges of the leaves outermost. Thisconstruction, however, is objectionable in that the leaf to which the index-cover is attached is liable to become torn owing to its frail and fragile character and the index detached or separated from the book.
The object of the present invention is to obviate the above objection; and it consists, essentially, in uniting one edge of one of the leaves of the index to the inner edge of one of the covers of the book at or near its junction with the leaves of the book, the index being confined between two leaves, which are made integral with the leaf attached to the cover, substantially as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the combined book and index united in accordance with the present invention and illustrating the invention in the act of being withdrawn or extended from within the book. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, the index being shown in its normal position within the book. Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating the index withdrawn or extended from within the book in position for use, and Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing an operation of the improved index to be hereinafter particularly referred to.
The numeral 1 designates a book with which the index may be combined, and is provided with the ordinary covers 2. The book may be of any kind or description desired-such, for instance, as a letter-press copy, account, or other book. The index 3 is of the usual or ordinary character, and may consist of a number of leaves bound in book form and provided along their edges with suitable reference-tags 4, bearing suitable characters or letters thereon in alphabetical order, said leaves being confined between suitable covers. The index-leaves 5 6 7 are preferably formed from a single piece of paper or other suitable material folded twice, as shown at 8 9, in opposite directions, the index being confined between the leaves 6 and 7 and united thereto at the fold 8, while the leaf 5 is secured to the cover of the book at 10. It is obvious, however, that instead of the leaves 5, 6, and 7 being for'med from a single piece of material they may be made separately and flexibly united in any convenient manner.
I am aware that a combined index and book has been constructed in which the index has been confined between two leaves and one of said leaves attached to the leaves of the book; but such construction is objectionable in that it requires the book-leaf to which it is attached to be made of Very stiff material diiferent from the rest of the leaves. By my invention, however, one of the leaves of the index is attached directly to the book-cover, thereby enabling it to be applied to any book irrespective of the character of the leaves of which it is composed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-.-
In a combined book and index, the combination, with the book provided with a cover 2, of the index provided with the leaves or covers 6 7, between which it is secured and ICO GEORGE BRADNER, J12, JNo. G. JONES.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto atfixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT M. RIGBY.
in use, but capable of being withdrawn or extended for use, substantially as described.
