Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 10, 1911.4..
To all whom 'it magy concern Be it known that l, Emma B. T-licir, a citizen of the United States, residing at Macungie, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Ready-Thilanee Sheets; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to malte and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful in'iprovements in ready balance sheets for bankers? use and the object in View lis to simplify the taking off of daily balances whereby it will only be necessary to examine the individual accounts which have been active that particular day.
More specifically, the invention consists in the provision of a ready balance sheet having a series of tabs formed integral with the sheet along the marginal edges thereof and upon which the daily balances may be written, after which 'the tab is adapted to be turned in order to project beyond the edge of the sheet and offer a means for identifying the particular sheet upon which appears the daily balance of any individual account as represented upon that particular sheet. By the provision of means of this character, the bookkeeper may readily turn to the different active accounts and take olf,
the balances, after which the tabs may be torn from the sheet.
My invention comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of an open ledger. l*1 ig. 2 is a perspective 'View of the ledger' showing all of the tabs of the active accounts in readiness to have the balances taken therefrom. Fig. 3 is an end view of one of the sheets.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A, A designate the various sheets of the ledger ruled and having headings usual upon leaves utilized for entry accounts in banking institutions, which sheets in the present instance are shown as being' held to suitable covers B, and each of said sheets has the usual ruling upon which the daily entries are made` each sheet being confined to an individual account. Formed preferably integral with the opposite edges of each sheet is a series of tabs, designated by letter D, the tabs upon one side being folded upon one face of the leaf while those upon the opposite edge are preferably folded upon the rear or opposite face of the sheet, and said tabs are held in their folded relation with the faces of the sheet by any suitable means, such as by an adhesive material, and the corner of each tab preferably cut away as at lil in order to facilitate a person taking hold of the corner upon an adjacent tab for convenience in loosening the portion which is held by adhesive material to the sheet and turning it out so that it will project beyond the edge of the sheet. ln order to facilitate the detaching of the folded portion of the tab, l have illustrated a` tape, designated by letters F, which is scoured to the under face of the tab and to the adjacent face of the sheet with one end of the tape projecting beyond the tab, forming a convenientiueaifs whereby the tab may be loosened.
ln order to compensate for the thickness of the sheet where at its opposite edge the tabs are formed and folded upon thc sheet, .I propose in the manufacture of tti sheet to cause the tabs and the portion upon which they are :folded to he rolled to a sullicient thinness so that, when the tabs are folded, the opposite edges of the sheet and the thickness of the sheet intermedizite the two rows of tabs will be uniform, as disclosed in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
In manipulating the ready balance sheet, the entries are made in the usual manner upon the sheets and the daily balance is written upon the tab in alinement with the entries for that particular day, after which the tab is loosened from the sheet by a person either pulling upon the tape or hy taking hold of the corner of the tab and loosening it from the sheet and turning it out t0 the position shown in Fig. l. of the drawings, the balance appearing upon the rear face Of the tab before the leaf is turned to the position shown in the upper part of Fig. l. The saine operation is repeated with every active account during the banking day and, at the end of the days work, the balance of every active account will appear upon a tab projecting from corresponding edges of the various sheets of the ledger. vVith these various balances appearing upon the tabs, it will be vapparent that the bookkeeper may readily take oli on a daily balance sheet the various balances shown upon the sheets or' the active accounts without the necessity of examining every sheet of the ledger to determine which accounts have been active for that particu.- lar day. vWhen the entire sheet has been taken up by individual entries, the sheet may be removed from the temporary binding covers and reversed and the rear side ern ployed for entries in the same manner as upon the first page. lllfhen the sheet is reversed, it will be noted that the tabs will appear in proper relation to the sheet to be utilized in the manner shown in Fig. l.
ln Fig. 2 of the drawings, l have shown a ledger with tabs projecting from various leaves thereof to designate the active accounts. lVhen the book is closed, the bookkeeper can commence at the upper end of the series and run o the balances upon an adding machine, thus getting the total of tabs are severed from the sheets of which they are integral parts.
`Wliat l claim to be new is z- A ready balance for j facilitating bank bookkeeping comprising a lsheet upon which daily entries are designed to be made, de.
tachable tabs ormed integral with one edge of the sheet and adapted to fold aga-inst the face of the sheet, the portion ofjthe sheet against which said tabs fold and the tabs themselves each being half the thickness of the body portion of the sheet, making the outer faces of the tabs and face of the sheet flush, said tabs being folded and adapted to be severed along a line Hush with the edge of the sheet, as set forth.
ln testimony whereof I hereunto ValiXed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
