UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK O. RHODES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CHECK-BOOK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK C. RHonns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Check-Book, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to check books, such as used by bank depositors in drawing against their accounts. In the use of such books as ordinarily constructed, it is necessary to add the column of drafts and deposits entered upon each stub sheet or page in order to carry the balances forward through the book.
The object of this invention is to produce a check book of special construction, which will obviate the necessity of constantly adding the itemized drafts or deposits in carrying the balance forward through the book as suggested.
The invention consists in the construction of a book to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective representing the book lying open at the first page; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the book after being partly used, and further illustrating the manner in which the book is adapted for making the entries; and Fig. 3 is a cross section through the back of the check book at the stubs upon an enlarged scale, and further illustrating the construction of the book.
Referring more particularly to the parts, 1 represents the cover of the book, which consists of a back cover 2 and a front cover 3, the same being connected by a binding or backing piece 4 which runs along the rear edge of the book and connects with the covers or flaps 2 and 3, as shown. The body 5 of the book is composed of a plurality of sheets 6 which may be divided and lined, as indicated, so as to form a plurality of checks, each sheet being formed at its left, or bound edge 7, into a stub upon which entries may be made corresponding to the individual checks which are drawn and torn out of the book. The first sheet 8 of the book is ruled Specification of Letters Patent.

tifying the different checks drawn, giving the amount, the date, and the service or debt for which the check was paid. The horizontal lines on this first sheet are close together so as to enable a great number of checks to be entered. At the right of the sheet there is a column for deposits and their date, so that the check book may be kept in accurate balance with the bank book. In addition to the front sheet 8, which constitutes the entry sheet for a number of the checks throughout the body of the book, there are provided similar entry sheets 9 which are normally folded into the body of the stubs 10, as indicated in Fig. 3.
A check book such as described, may have a great number of sheets of checks, so many in fact, that a single front sheet will not afford space enough for entering all the checks in the book. For this reason the entry sheets 9 are provided throughout the body of the book. These are disposed at substantially equal distances apart and each of the entry sheets 9 is supposed to accommodate the entries of the checks of the next section or division of the stubs which follow. In this way the entire book is composed of divisions or sections, each section corresponding to one of the entry sheets. When the first section of checks and stubs has been used the next entry sheet is unfolded from the body of the book, and extended across the inner face of the front cover 3. I provide means for forming a backing to enable the person using the book to make the entries conveniently on each entry sheet. In this connection attention is called to the fact that the used stubs would ordinarily prevent these entry sheets in the body of the book from being extended flat upon the front cover, as suggested. In other words, the used check stubs tend to prevent writing with facility upon the entry sheets. In order to overcome this objection and to form a backing for the intermediate entry sheets 9, that is, for the entry sheets which are disposed within the body of the book, I provide a backing flap 11, which flap is formed of cardboard or stiff material, and is attached at 12, as indicated in Fig. 1, to the outer edge of the front cover 3. In filling out a check which is in the body of the book, the backing flap 11 is folded over the used portion 13 of the check stubs, as indicated in Fig. 2, and the entry sheet 9 which is then being used is extended above the backing flap so as to lie flat thereupon. The check stubs 13 evidently will not then interfere in any way with the making of the entries 011 the entry sheet, and a smooth writing surface is provided for the pen. Of course, when each entry sheet is filled the column is added and its balance is carried forward to the next sheet and so on throughout the book. It will, therefore, appear that it is unnecessary to add the column of drafts on each check stub.
Special attention is called to the deposit column of the entry sheet; the deposits which are itemized on the check stubs are summed up and entered as a single entry on the entry sheet, as indicated in Fig. 1; the totals of the deposits are carried forward from one entry sheet to the next in the same manner as the drafts.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A check book having a plurality of stubs with checks attached thereto, a plurality of entry sheets disposed through the body of said book between said stubs to receive the entries corresponding to said checks, and a flap of stiff material movably attached to said book, which may be laid over the used stubs to form a backing for said entry sheets.
2'. A check book having a plurality of stubs with checks, a plurality of entry sheets disposed between the said stubs to receive the entries corresponding to a plurality of said checks, a front cover, and a flap of stiff material attached to the edge of said cover and which may be laid over the used stubs to form a backing for said entry checks.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
