CHECK BooK.
No. 320,782. PatentedJune Z3, 1885.
alia/ut INVENTOR WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JENNISON C. I'IALL, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
CHECK-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,782, dated June 23, 1885.
Application filed September 2S, 18. 0.
l0 ail whom, t may concern.:
Beit known that I, JENNisoN C. HALL, of the city and county `of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Check-Books, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part ol' this sp ecication.
My invention relates to stubless bank check books; and the object of my invention is to improve the arrangement el the account sheets with which this class of check-books are provided in lieu of the stubs heretofore employed.
Stubless check-books are usually provided with one or more leaves which are so ruled and headed as to contain entries of the amounts deposited in bank and of the amounts drawn by checks. The purpose of this arrangement is to preserve a complete and concise memorandum of the condition of the users bank account, so that when it is desired to draw a check the user may be able to ascertain at a glance from his checkbook whether or not his account is in the desired condition. As checks are frequently filled out -in the presence of others, and as the check account should be lled out with a memorandum of the check drawn simultaneously with the drawing of the check, it is desirable that the deposit account should be concealed when the check and check account are being written upon. It is also desirable that when the check to be de-` tached is being written upon, each account page should be directly before the writer, and that no stub or similar leat1 should intervene to inconvenience the writer.
My present invention contemplates these various requirements 5 and it consists in the peculiar and novel construction and arrangement of the check-book, and also in certain details of construction, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved check book, showing the accountleaves laid back upon one of the covers, so as to expose the checks and the check account.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the book, showing the account-leaves laid over upon the checks, so as to expose the deposit account. Fig. 3 is asimilar View of the book, showing the account-leavesin raised condition for the purpose of displaying the particular construction.
In the said drawings A designates a number of blank checks which are secured to the book by stitching, or in any other suitable or preferred way.
D designates a stiff leal", which is securid at its inner end to the book by a strip of cloth or other suitable material in such manner that the leaf may be readily laid either back upon the front cover, as shown in Fig. 1, or over upon the checks, as shown in Fig. 2.
Upon the outer end of the leaf Dare secured a number of leaves in such manner as to be turned over upon either side of the leaf D. Each of these leaves and also the stiff leaf D is ruled and headed on one side with acheck account, B, and on the opposite side with the deposit account C, so that when the leaves are laid back upon the cover, as shown in Fig. l, the check account shall be exposed to view, and when laid over upon the checks, as shown in Fig. 2, the deposit account shall be exposed to View. The check account consists of a narrow vertical column at the left-hand end of the page, which is headed No.',77 and is designed to receive entries of the numbers of checks drawn; a double column next to the number column, which is headed Datej and is designed to receive entries of the dates of checks drawn; a wide column next to the datecoluinn, which is headed Checks Drawn Favor Of, and is designed to contain entries of names of payees, a narrow column, which is headed For Vhat, and is designed for entries of the purposes for which the checks were drawn; a double column, which is headed An1ount,7 and which is to receive entries of the sums named in the checks; and, lastly, at the right-hand end of the page, a double column which is headed Amount to deduct from,7 which is designed to receive the amounts to be deducted from deposits. The deposit account consists of a vertical double column, at the left-hand end of the page, which is headed Date,77 and is designed to contain entries of the dates of deposits; next IOO a Wide single column, which is headed Deposit, and is intended to receive entries of the character of deposits, and lastly, a double column, which is headed A1nount, and is to receive entriesof the amounts of the deposits. This page is divided vertically by a double center-line, on the right of which is a space similarly :ruled and headed as just described for the space to the left.
W'hen a deposit is made, the account-leaves are laid over upon the checks, as shown in Fig. 2, and the proper entry is made in the deposit account C, and when a check is filled out the'pages are laid back upon the cover, as shown in Fig. l, and the proper entry is made in the check account B. This is continued till the depositaccountl page-of the stiff leaf is illed up, after which each of the leaves secured to said stiff leaf is used and turned over between the stiff leaf and the contiguous cover as fast as filled up.
The book illustrated in the drawings is a pocket check-book, and has only one check eX- posed at a time, While the account-pages correspond in size with the check.
I do not wish to be understood as confining myself exclusively to the precise arrangement of columns or character of headings above described, as they, may be. varied to suit particular requirements.
It will thus be seen thatin my improved account-book the deposit account is concealed by the exposed check account While the check is being Written upon, and that by folding each record-leaf is brought directly before the Writer as the cheek is being written upon Without any intervening leaf or stub.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. Acheck-book having two or more recordleaves arranged, substantially as described, so that by folding eac-h record-page, when in use, may be directly before the Writer Without intervening leaf or stub, as the check to be detached is being Written upon. i
2. In a bank check-book, the combination, with the covers and a number of blank checks arranged, as described, of a series of leaves provided with deposit and check account rulings, and arranged, substantially as described, so that the deposit account shall be concealed by the check account When the latter is being .Written upon, substantially as described.
JENNISON C. HALL.
