C. M. BUMP. BANK CHECK BooK.
No. 492,956. Patented Mar. '7, 1893.

CHARLES M. BUMP, OF BAY CITY, MICHIGAN.
BANK-CHECK BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 492,956, dated March 7, 1893.
Application filed June 13,1892. Serial No. 436,523. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, CHARLES M. BUMP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bay City, in the county of Bay and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bank-Check Books, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in bank check books, and pertains more particularly to improvements in that class of books containing blank checks, drafts &c.,arranged for carrying in the pocket.
The invention consists in a book composed of a series of blank checks bound together with the printed sides of the checks facing in one direction, with a bank account or memorandum sheet detachably secured to page of the cover opposite the check.
The invention also consistsin the combinanation, arrangement and construction of the several parts, as I shall here-in-after fully describe in detail, and which will also be particularlydeflned and pointed out in the claim of this specication.
The accompanying drawings, in which my invention is illustrated, contains the following views, with the gures of reference used in the following description placed on each of the several illustrations to indicate the same parts throughout.
Figure l., is a View in perspective, of one of my improved bank check books open for Iilling out the checks. Fig. 2., is a section of the saine, taken at Fig. 3., is a section taken at y-y in Fig. l. Fig. 4., is an enlarged view detached of the metal attachment for securing the account sheet to the cover. Fig. 5., is the same in a modified form.
1, represents the blank check of any usual form, a series of which are bound togetherin the form of a book, and 2, and 3, are the front and back covers which inclose the series, the printed sides of the checks being preferably uppermost and ready to be iilled out when the front cover 2, is opened.
44, and 5, are strips of sheet metal or other suitable material secured transversely upon the inner face of the cover 2, the strip 4, being located near the outer edge of the cover, While the strip 5, is arranged near the inner or hinged edge of the same. The adjacent edges of these strips are raised from the cover in the form of flanges 6, and are preferably held in position by the end portions 7, of the strips being bent over the edges "of the cover and provided with serrated end edges 8, which are turned at a right angle inwardly and pressed into the cover, so that the pieces are thus iirmly held in position.
9, is a sheet containing on its surface a blank bank account ruling of any desired or convenient form, and may contain two, three or more pages folded to the size transversely of the cover 2, while the Width of the sheet is such as to allow its lateral edges to be passed beneath and be held in position by the flanges 6, so that when the sheet is thus held the blank account sheet will be uppermost and yopposite the blank check to be iilled out. It will be at once seen that when the check is filled out, an entry of the same can be made on the account sheet, which is in full view and ready for reference, as to amount of balance &c., and when the check is torn o, another blank check is in the same position without turning a leaf or in any way manipulating the book, and when one page of the account sheet is lled out, it can then be removed from the iianges and replaced with another page uppermost, so that a continuous account may be kept until all of the checks in the series have been used. And when this is done the account sheet can be removed and tiled away, and thereby retain a complete record of the checks given out, and the bank account sheet being in acompact and reduced form which requires small space and attention, and can also be easily referred to in th future.
By making the strips 4, and 5, of metal and with the ends arranged for clamping over the edges of the cover, the attachment may be applied to any ordinary form of check books, so that the sheet account system can be used therewith if desired instead of the ordinary and cumbersome stub system, and by folding the account sheet properly a continued account from one page to the other is kept, in a neat and compact form.
While I have described my invention as particularly convenient for pocket style of blank check books, it Will be understood of IOO course that the flanged portions holding the account sheet detachably secu red to the inner Side of the cover, may be secured to any de- 'sired form of book, and may be arranged and secured to the cover in many ways and attain the same object, and I therefore Wish it to be understood that 1 do not limit my invention entirely to the particular form described herein, for securing the iianges in position, the gist and most important feature of the invention being the account sheet detachably secured to the inner side of the cover, Whereby on opening the cover, the blank check to be filled will be exposed on one page While the opposite page Will contain the bank account record exposed to full view; and That I claim as my invention is CHARLES M. BUMP. VitnesseS:
G. P. THOMAS, JAS. E. THOMAS.
