UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT \Vlfllll MORGAN, 0F NE\V YORK, N. Y.
CHECK-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 468,441, dated February 9, 1892.
Application filed June 13,1891.
To all whom it nttty concern:
Be it known that I, Roennr WEBB MORGAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and ,5 State of New York, have invented certain new and usefullmprovemen tsin Check-Books, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in check-books; and it consists in the novel features hereinafter particularly described and claimed, whereby in a pocket check-book I am enabled to presentthe conveniences found in the usual commercial books having three or more checks on apage, and whereby, also, the size of the larger commercial check-books may be reduced and the conveniences thereof increased.
The invention will be described in detail hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of an open pocket check-book embodying the features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of same on the dotted line 22 of Fig. 1, the blotter for the book, however, being shown closed over the stubs by full lines and opened therefrom by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a modified form of check-book embodying the invention, a portion of the blotter being broken away to disclose the stubsheet beneath it.
In the drawings, referring to Figs. 1 and 2, A designates the covers for the book, 13 the folded leaves thereof, and O a blotter attached by means of a flexible strip of muslin D or other suitable material to the front edge of the back cover and adapted to be folded upon the leaves B. In Fig. 2 the blotter G is shown folded upon the leaves B by full lines and in its open position by dotted lines. Each leaf B is made to constitute three checks, a corresponding number of stubs, and a full column for deposits and balances, the obverse'and reverse faces of the leaf being thus utilized to the fullest extent. Each leaf is folded upon itself on the line of the creases at c and forms the checks E F G and the stub portion H, which bears upon its obverse face I the column J for deposits and balances and upon its reverse face K the stubs L, the latter corresponding in number with the number of checks. The leaves B are so printed that the Serial No. 396,091. (No model.)
checks E F G all face upward when the leaf is folded, and hence upon the detachment of the check E the check F, without unfolding the leaf, will be in position to be written upon, and upon the issue of the check F the check G will likewise be in position for use. The stubs L on the leaf at the right-hand side of Fig. 1 will be used for the checks E F G at the left-hand side of said figure, and this course will be followed throughout the book, the stubs on the leaf ahead being used for the checks of the preceding leaf, while the deposits made and balances found during the period of the issue of the checks E F G will be recorded in the column J beneath the check G. It will thus be seen that the face of the checks and corresponding stubs in use will be at once exposed upon opening the book, while the record of the deposits and balances will be properly concealed by the checks. It is to be noted, also, that the checks are to be written upon without unfolding the leaf and that the leaf is perforated along the creases a b c to permit the ready detachment of the checks. The book of folded leaves B presents at its front the perforated creased edges or. c, which are protected against abrasion by the strip of muslin D, connecting the blotter G with the back cover, as shown in Fig. 2. lVhen the blotter C is folded upon the stubs L and the book is closed, the strip D and covers A effectually inclose the leaves B, and the book is rendered compact and of convenient form to be carried in the pocket.
In. the modified form of checkbook illustrated in Fig. 3 the covers A, blotter (J, and strip D are the same as the similarly-designated features shown in Figs. 1 and 2; but the leaves B, instead of having the creases a Z) c dividing the checks, have a single crease (Z, which divides the leaf into the check portion M, and the portion N bearing upon its obverse face the spaces 0 P for deposits and balances and upon its reverse face the stubs Q, corresponding in number with the checks R on the portion M.
In the use of the book shown in Fig. 3, as in that illustrated in Fig. 1, the checks and stubs are fully exposed on the opening of the book, and the deposit and balance columns are concealed beneath the checks.
In either form of the invention illustrated the book is compact and convenient of use and its capacity increased above that of the usual forms of books heretofore known. It is to be noted, also, that in eitherbook shown the detachment of the check portion of the leaves results in a corresponding reduction of the thickness of the book throughout the surface area described by the covers A when closed, and hence after, for example, one-half of the checks of the book have been issued the book will still have a uniform thickness throughout.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The check-book consisting of the folded leaves B, each individual leaf beyond its edge at which it is bound into the book bearing the checks, stubs, and deposit-column, the outer or check portion of the leaf being folded inward upon the stub portion, and the latter bearing upon its obverse face the deposit-column and upon its reverse face the stubs, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The check-book composed of the folded leaves B, each individual leaf beyond its edge at which it is bound into the book bearing the checks, stubs, and deposit-column, the outer or check portion of the leaf being folded inward upon the stub portion, combined with the blotter O and flexible strip 1), substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
checks folded inward one upon the other and upon the stub portion, the latter bearing the stubs on its reverse face, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5. The pocket check-book composed of the folded leaves B, each individual leaf beyond its edge at which it is bound into the book bearing the checks and stubs, the check portion of the leaf having creases a b c and being folded inward upon the stub portion, the latter bearing the stubs upon its reverse face, substantially as 'set'forth.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 11th day of June, A. D. 1891.
