PATENT OFFICE..
WILSON MORTON, OE CHICAGO, ILLINOIS; SIDNEY CARR CARROLL, f ADMIN- ISTRATOR OE SAID MORTON, DECEASED, lAsSIerNOR TO THE UNITED f STATES SALES `BOOK COMPANY, OE CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORA- TION OF ILLINOIS.
SAKLEs-MEMORANDUM HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters `Patent No. 760,697, dated May 24, 1904.
Application filed December l, 1902. Serial No. 133,390. (No model.)
ATo a/ZZ wig/m, it' may concern: A
'Be it known that I, WILSON MORTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago,
` Cook county, Illinois, have invented certain new land useful Improvements in Sales-Memorandum Holders, of which the following is a specification. v f
This invention relates'to salesmens entryfolders or pocket sales-books, vand has particular reference lto salesmens folders which providea plurality of conveniences .for recording and'carrying'-about memorandums or which are adapted to hold a book or pad of duplicate sales-memorandums and provides va .stiff pad upon which originalfand duplicate sales-memorandums may be written.
i' p The object of the invention is to provide a convenient pocket book or folder adapted to hold the cardboard portion of apad of sales slips or sheets or similar memorandum-paper, ,as well as a general entry-sheet upon which the .individual transactionsare summed up and checked with the original or duplicate sales-slips.
Further objects of the invention are to so arrange the individual sales-Slips and the general entry-sheet' as to have both conveniently in view at thesame time tov facilitate checking one against the other and to provide means for holding and concealing from view the duplicate slips already written up, so as to p always present a clean top sheet.
The invention consists in a folder comprising means for holding a pad of paper, separate means for holding an entry-sheet, a rest adapted to be inserted between individual pages of said pad, and means for removing from sight one or more leaves of said pad without removing same from the pad.
.The invention further consists in various details of construction and in combinations of parts, all as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.l
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawspread wide open.
.on the line m m of Fig. 1.
,'In the drawings, 2 represents the backfor the sales-memorandum pad 3. Said backis provided with an endwise open pocket 4, (represented by the dotted lines,) into which a portion of the usual pasteboard of ya pad of paper is inserted and held, the'projecting portion of said pad lof 1 paper being indicated by the numeral 3. .Y
5 is the usual overlapping iiap, over which the original and carbon ycopy and carbonsheetsare placed when an entry is. made. 6 is a supplementary back upon which the back 2 is folded, and between which backs the carbon-copy of each sales-memorandum is placed when turned back to presenta 4new blank sheet on the top of the page. 1 i i 7 is the back for the salesmans general entry-sheetS', and said back 7 is provided with shallow pockets 9 '10, into which the ends of sheet 8 are inserted` and said sheetthereby held in place upon the back 7. When folded up, the back 7 may overlap the flap 5, orlivice part of this specilication, and 1 versa, yas-the top cover, the back 6 always being the'back of the folded book `or folder,
My invention is 'employed'as follows: A pad of sales-memorandums 3 having vbeen placed in the pocket 1l, as previously described the'back 2 is folded over on .the back 6 and `flap 5 turned over on top of pad -3 and under the sheet or sheets to be written upon. When an entry has been made, the sheet kthat has been written upon is turned back between the backs 2 and 6, or in case duplicate copies are made the original sheet maybe torn od and the copy turned back between the covers 2 and 6 for future reference. This not only provides means for filing away the entries already made, but leaves the top of the pad always presenting a fresh entry-sheet. A short memorandum of the transaction is then entered upon the sheet 8, which, as will be noted, is always conveniently spread out above the pad of paper, facilitating correct entry and comparisons as to correctness thereof at a glance. When the several entry-sheets are exhausted or filled up, new ones may be inserted in the pockets 4, 9, and 10, respectively. If there is no occasion to employ the sheet 8, the back 7 therefor may be folded upon the back 6 and the sheets which have been written upon filed between the backs 2 and 7, or the back 7 may be used as a cover, whichever may be preferred.
If at stated periods the salesman desires to compare the entries upon the pages of the pad 8 with the corresponding entries on sheet 8, he can very conveniently do so by turning page after page on the pad 3 and at-the same time always have the sheet 8 before his eyes. When the folder is ready for the pocket or to be filed away, the backs 2 and 6 are folded upon each other and then the back 7 and flap 5, making a very compact device provided with a number of facilities.
Itis obvious that various modifications may be made in my invention by one skilled in the art without departingfrom the spirit thereofv,'andI therefore do not conline myself to the specific construction herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A sales-memorandum holder comprising two pairs of hinged boards, a board of one pair being superimposed, inner face up, upon the inner face of a board' of the other pair and hinged lto the latter at right angles to the hinges connecting 'the boards of each pair.
2. A sales-'memorandum holder comprising four similar boards hinged at ends to provide two pairs, said pairs being hinged along side edges of a board of each so as to present when fully open the interior faces of one pair and exterior faces of other pair.
3. A sales-memorandum holder having two hinged book-opening sections, a leaf hinged to the upper edge of one of said sections to fold inwardly, and a leaf hinged to the lower edge of the other section to fold, when said sections are fully open, in reverse direction.
4. A sales-memorandum holder comprising two pairs of hinged boards, a board of one pair being superimposed, inner face up, upon the inner face of a board of the other pair and hinged to the latter at right angles to the hinges connecting the boards of each pair, and
means for removably attaching a plurality of sales-slips or the like to one of said boards.
5. A sales-memorandum holder comprising four similarboards hinged at their ends to provide two pairs, said pairs being hinged along the side edges of a board of each so as to present when fully open the interior faces of one pair and exterior faces of other pair, and means for removably attaching a plurality of salesslips or the like to one of said boards.
6. A sales-memorandum holder having two hinged book-opening sections, a leaf hinged to the upper edge of one of said sections to fold inwardly, a leaf hinged to lower edge of the other section to fold, when said sections are fully open, in reverse direction, and means for detaehably securing a plurality of salesslips or the like to one of said sections.
7. An article of the class described comprising four similar boards hinged at their ends to provide two pairs, said pairs being hinged along the side edges of a board of each so as to present when fully open the interior faces of one pair and the exterior faces of the other pair, said first-mentioned pair eomprisingoutside covers for said second pair and other contents, and said second-mentioned pair comprising a back for a pad of sales-slips or the like and a rest adapted to be inserted between the sheet or sheets in use and the remainder of said pad.
8. An article of the class described having two hinged book-opening sections comprising a writing-back and a rear cover providing` a pocket or receptacle therebetween when closed, a front cover hinged to the upper edge of said rear cover to fold inwardly, a pad of sales-slips or the like removably secured upon the exterior face of said back when folded upon said rear cover, and a resthinged to said back to fold between the sheet or sheetsin use and the remainder of said pad.
9. An article of the class described having two hinged book-opening sections comprising a writing-back and a rear cover, means for removably securing a pad of sales-slips or the like upon the exterior face of said back when folded upon said rear cover, a front cover hinged to the upper edge of said rear cover to fold inwardly, a rest hinged to the opposite edge of said back and adapted to be folded bctween the sheet or sheets in use and the remainder of said pad, and means upon the interior face of said front cover for removably securing an entry-sheet or the like.
ln testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
WILSON MORTON.
