WILLIAM A. PEPPER, OF .TOLIET, ILLINOIS.
MANIFOLDING ACCOUNT-BOOK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. PEPPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at. Joliet, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Manifolding Account-Books, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvement in the construction and arrangement of manifolding books of the type now in quite gen eral use by salesmen in stores. Books of this class contain, usually, bound leaves, each consisting of an original blank and a duplicate blank folded to he one underneath the other with a carbon sheet or surface between them, whereby the sales-items written upon the original will also appear upon the duplicate. The usual practice is to transmit the original blank or slip to the cashier, if it records a cash sale, or to the bookkeeper in the case of a credit sale, and to hand the duplicate to the purchaser. The leaves, in some instances, are formed with stubs from which the blanks are severed after being filled out, these stubs being designed to receive memoranda of the total footings of the respective pages, and serve as a register of the totals of the various sales for use by the book-keeper in determining the number and amount of sales for the day of the particular salesman who has used the book. In other instances, a memorandum of the sales-totals is kept on a separate page, usually the coverleaf, ruled for the purpose. In both instances, it is necessary for the salesman to copy the total from the original sales-blank onto the stub or ruled-sheet, and this has been found, in practice, to result in confusion owing either to the neglect of the salesman to record a total, or to a mistake on his part in copying the figures.
My object is to provide an improvement in manifolding account-boobs whereby the act of writing the total footing on an original blank, or sales-slip, will produce a record of the same in proper relative position on a totals-record sheet or slip forming an integral part of the book, or, and preferably, an adjunct applicable thereto.
In the use of my improved manifolding record-book it is unnecessary for the salesman to write a sales-total more than once to keep the necessary record, and this avoids the danger of mistakes incident to the 1 se of the book's hitherto commonly provided as before stated.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 144,170.
in the drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a manifolding account-book containing 50 sales-leaves and constricted with my improvements; ig. 2, a similar view of my improved manifolding account-book, in this instance containing but 10 sales-leaves and showing how the original blank is raised to expose the drplicate blank, both of which are to be torn from the b ooh and severed from each other; Fig. 3, another perspective view of the book showing the sales-leaves from the underside, also the totals-record sheet and strip of cart: on paper which overlies the same; and Fig. 4, a broken perspective view of the totals-record sheet.
The booliis made up of leaves fastened together at a and consisting each of an original blank I) and a drplicate blank 0 adapted to be torn apart at the line d. The original and dtplicate are correspondingly ruled and the illustration shows them provided with credit and cash columns. Also attached at a is a sheet of carbon paper 6. At the lower ends of the cash and credit columns the leaves are cut away, as indicated, to present page surfaces progressively reduced in length at the said coltimns. In the constriiction shown in Fig. 1, there are five series of ten leaves each progressively cut away as descrih ed, whereby the original and duplicate blanlrs forming the leaves present from back to front of the series, progressively enlarged portions which, at their lower ends, are adapted to receive the sales-totals. In other words, the ruled off spaces f, of companion original and duplicate blanl's in which sales-totals are to be written, extend beyond the spaces f of the blanks next underneath a distance equal to that between ruled lines on the blanks which are intended to receive sales items.
The totals-record sheet 9 shown in Fig. 4 is adapted for use with the book shown in lig. 1 and is approximately five times the length of the book. It is folded along the lines h to present five sections with lines ruled as shown and numbered progressively from 1 to 50. In the use of the book, the totals-record blank 9 is folded back and forth on the lines It with the section containing the figures 1 to 10 uppermost, and is then slipped beneath the uppermost series of ten leaves. A strip of carbon paper 01 is placed over the ruled credit and cash colt mns on the sheet g, which colt mns correspond with those of the leaves. The carbon e is passed between the first pair of blanks b, 0, when the book is ready to receive the entries of the first sale. The salesman writes the items in the manner indicated, for example, and places the total or footing in the space The act of writing the figures of the total in the space f car ses the same figures to appear in line 1 of the totals-record sheet. It is to be understood that, as shown in the drawing, the leaves and therefore the book are greatly exaggerated in thickness for purposes of illustration.
After each sale the leaf on which it is recorded is torn out and the blanks forming the leaves are torn apart to be employed in the common manner. The carbon 6 is then passed between the next pair of blanks. The sales-total written upon the next sheet in the space f thereof will appear in line 2 of the totals-record sheet, and so on. A cash sale is written as indicated in the cash column of each original blank and a credit sale in the credit column thereof, so that when ten sales have been made the totals will appear in proper order and in the proper columns of the totals-record sheet in the manner indicated in Fig. 4.
W hen the first ten leaves have been torn from the book the totals-record sheet 9 is turned, or folded over on the line it, to present the section containing the ruled lines 11 to 20. When fifty sales have been made the book is exhausted and the totals-record sheet completely filled. Then, or at the end of the day, this totals-record sheet, with the name of the salesman thereon, is passed to the book-keeper who can quickly foot up the sales and determine the business done by the salesman.
The gist of my invention lies in providing a manifolding account-book having one or more series of leaves, each series presenting, from back to front thereof, progressively enlarged portions adapted to receive the sales-totals, whereby, when the latter are written in the spaces provided for them, the same figures will appear upon a totals-record sheet in the manner and for the purpose described. The leaves being cut away as described, prevents their interfering with the lnanifolding operation which causes the totals to be placed upon the totals-record sheet.
Instead of employing the separate carbon sheets 6, t, the original blanks may have carbon coatings on their rear faces, and the duplicate blanks may be coated with carbon on their rear faces at the spaces These modifications, as well as modifications in details of construction of the leaves and book, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as defined by the claims.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a manifolding account-book, the combination of a series of leaves presenting, from back to front of the series, progressively enlarged portions, a sheet beneath said enlargements, and manifolding-means overlying said sheet, whereby totals written upon the enlargementswill appear upon the said sheet.
2. In a inanifolding account-book, the combination of a series of sales-leaves, each consisting of an original and a duplicate blank and presenting, from back to front of the series, progressively enlarged portions, a sheet beneath said enlargements, and manifolding-means overlying said sheet, whereby totals written upon the enlargements will appear in order upon the said sheet.
3. In a manifolding accountbook, the combination of series of sales-leaves presenting, from back to front of each series, progrcssively-enlarged portions, a blank sheet folded to present a separate section for each series beneath said enlargements, and manifoldinganeans overlying said sheet, for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM A. PEPPER.
