PATENT OFFICE.
BLOTTER ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 779,274, dated January 3, 1905.
Application filed May 12, 1904. Serial No. 297,675.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, JosEPHVVRIeHT GEAEME, a citizen of the United States, of the United States Navy, stationed at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Blotter Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in blotter attachments for books; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a face view of a book opened and provided'with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the blotter attachment provided with a single blotter. Fig. 3 is a face view of a book opened and provided with my improvements arranged somewhat differently from the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4: is a face view of a book opened and provided with my improvement, the book being shown in the form ofa pad. Fig. 5 shows a somewhat difierent arrangement of the blotting attachment, and Figs. 6 and 7 are face views showing still different face views within the broad principles of my invention. Fig. 8 is a detail edge view showing the preferredway of connecting the blotter with the hinge piece or carrier. Fig. 9 is a perspective view, showing a second blotter-section hinged to one side edge instead of to the outer end edge of the main blotter-section; and Fig. 10 shows two blotter-sections hinged together at their meeting side edges, one of the blotters being hinged at one end to the book-cover.
My blotter attachment is used in connection with books, and I do not desire to be limited strictly to permanently-bound books or books in which the leaves are permanently held in place, but desire to include in such term book pads, tablets, and the like, including check-books for bank use, which are provided with leaves and with backs or covers.
, In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the book A may be of any ordinary construction, having the leaves B and the cover (1. To the cover C, I connect by a hinge connection D one edge of a swinging carrier D, the hinge connection D being on a median linethat is to say,in such construction midway between the edges C and C of the cover C. This swinging carrier D is of such size relatively to the cover or back C that when swung upwardly toward the edge C or downwardly toward the edge C of the back it will approximately coincide with the edge B or the edge B of the leaves of the book, so that the blotter section or sheet E, which is hinged at E at one edge to the outer swinging edge of the carrier D, may be turned when in the position shown in Fig. 1 to present one side to blot the page facing the back of the book or may be turned over the sheet to blot by its other side the page on the opposite side of the face of said sheet, or the attachment may be swung downwardly from the position shown in Fig. 1 to the dotted-line position indicated in said figure to operate from the lower edge C of the back instead of from the upper edge of said back, as before described. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 I provide a second blotter-sheet F, which has ahinge connection F at its inner edge with the outer edge of the blotter-sheet E, forms an extension of such blotter-sheet E, and may be used jointly with or as supplemental to the said sheet, as will be readily understood. In this construction, as shown in Fig. 1, it may be desirable in some instances to make the swinging carrier D of blotting or bibulons paper, so it can also be used for blotting purposes, or it may be preferred to make the swinging carrier D of cotton or other textile material reinforced by a card or other sheet in orderto render it comparatively stiff.
The construction shown in Fig. 2 is similar to that shown in Fig. 1, except that in Fig. 2 the extension-sheet F is omitted.
The construction illustrated in Fig. 3 is similar to that shown in Fig. 2, except that in Fig. 3 the axis of the hinge-joint in Fig. 3 is parallel with the axis 6 of the cover of the book 6 shown in said figure, while in Figs.
1 and 2 the axis of the hinge-joint between the carrier and the book is at a right angle to the axis of the cover of the book. I
In Fig. 4 the construction is substantially the same as that shown in Fig. 2, except that the book in Fig. I is in the form of a pad instead of a book proper, as shown in Fig. 2.
In the construction shown in Fig. 5 I show a construction especially adapted for books which are approximately square. In this con struction the hinge connection at G, between the swinging carrier G and the back of the book, is arranged on a median line between two opposite corners of the book-back, or, in other words, extends diagonally to instead of parallel with or at a right angle to the axis of the book, as illustrated in the other figures of the drawings. In this construction the blotter-sheet H, which is hinged at its inner side to the outer edge of the swinging carrier G, is arranged to proximately coincide with either of two edges IL 71. of the back of the book in the dilferent adjustments of the blotter, as will be understood from the full and dotted lines in the said Fig. 5 of the drawings.
In Figs. 6 and 7 I show blotter attachments in which the inner sections I and z' constitute the swinging carrier and have hinged connections at I and 2" at their inner edges with the book-covers and have the outer or blotter-sheets I hinged at their inner edges at I 71", in connection with the swinging carrier I or i, the latter being illustrated as of blotting or bibulous paper. This construction shown in Fig. 6 will be found useful, as it may be employed for blotting two opposite pages at once without closing the book.
The construction as shown is simple, easily applied, and will be found efficient in use.
In applying the invention for use in pads such, for instance, as shown in Figs. 3 and L- the axis of the flexible or swinging carrier may be either parallel with or at a right angle to the hinge of the cover, while in books as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the axis of the hinge connection between the swinging carrier and the cover is preferably at a right angle to the hinge of the cover in order to fully utilize both sides of the blotter.
In Fig. 8 I show the preferred way of forming the hinge connection, this being by splitting the edge of the blotter and applying mucilage to the inside of the \I thus formed and inserting the flexible hinge portion and pressing the sections of the blotter onto the same, this operation being comparatively simple, as most blotters are now made laminated. This construction is especially advantageous, as it obviates exposing the muslin on either side of the blotter, and so avoids any smearing of the writing to be blotted.
In Fig. 9 I show a variation of the construction shown in Fig. 1 and in which Fig. 9 the second blotter-section is hinged to the side edge of the first blotter instead of to the end thereof.
Fig. 10 shows a variation of the construction shown in Fig. 7, consisting in hinging the second blotter-sheet to the side edge instead of to the end of the first blotter-sheet.
Both of the constructions shown in Figs. 9 and 10 enable me to blot both pages of a book at the same time.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination in a book of the leaves and the cover, a swinging carrierhaving a hinge connection at one edge with the cover on a median line, a blotter-sheet having a hinge connection with the outer swinging edge of the swinging carrier and arranged to approximately coincide with either of two edges of the leaves of the book in the diifer ent adjustments of the blotter, and a second blotter-sheet having a hinge connection at one edge with the said first blotter, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the book, the carrier having a hinge connection at one edge with the book on a median line, and the blotter having a hinge connection with another edge of said carrier, the blotter at its hinge connection with the carrier being arranged to approximately coincide with either of two edges of the book in the different adjustments of the blotter.
3. The improvement in books, tablets, 860., comprising in combination the back, the leaves, a blotter, and a swinging carrier hinged at one edge to the back on a median line, the blotter being hinged to the other or swinging edge of the carrier and adjustable in different positions to approximately coincide with either one of two edges of the leaves, substantially as set forth.
4:. A blotting attachment for books comprising a swinging carrier having a hinged connection at one edge with the book, and a plurality of hinged blotter-sheets carried by the outer swinging edge of the carrier.
5. A blotting attachment comprising a plurality of blotter-sheets hinged together at their meeting edges and a swinging carrier for said blotter-sheet, having a hinged connection with the book on a median line.
