BINDING SHEET-MUSIC.

Be it known that l, ELBRIDGE HARRIS, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binding Sheet-NI usic, rte., of which the following is a full, clear, and

-exact description.

This invention has for its object the securing or binding together of the leaves of sheetmusic more particularly, although it is appli cable as well to newspapers, pamphlets, books, ttc.; and the invention consists 0f leaves of sheet-music, newspapers, pamphlets, books, &c., secured and bound together, all substantially as hereinafter fully described, reference being-had to the accompanying plate of draw ings, in which- Figure l represents in front view sheets of music secured together and having their edges bound in accordance with this invention and as closed. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same opened; Fig. 3, a vertical cross-section on line 3, 2, Fig. t, a horizontal cross-section on line l at, Fig. 2; Fig, 5, a cross-section on line 5 5, Fig. l, but with the leaves opened somewhat; Fig. 6, a cross-section similar to Fig. 5, but showing six leaves. Figs. 7, 8, and

9 are detail cross-sections, to be hereinafterl referred to.

In the drawings, A represents sheets of music, made of paper or other suitable material, all as usual, and formed in Figs, l to 5, both inclusive, of four leaves, B, C, D, and E. The leaves 13 C represent the outside leaves or covers, and are made by folding a sheet of paper, &c., along its middle, as at a, and the leaves D E (the inner leaves) are formed by folding a sheet of paper, &c.,at its middle, as at l?, all as usual in sheets of music, and needing no particular description herein. The leaves D E are pla-ced between the leaves B C, and are secured to the leaf O bya strip, F, of cloth or other suitable material, which strip of cloth, &c., is folded longitudinally along the middle and secured by one of its folds, (l, to the side of the sheet C, and by its other fold, f, to the sheet E, from top to bottom of each sheet, by paste, glue, or other suitable adhesive material, as shown more particularly in Fig. 5 in cr0ss-section.

G G are strips of cloth or other suitable material, which are folded longitudinally along their central line and placed over the top, bottom, and side or front edges, g, 7L, and Z, respectively, of the several leaves, and secured thereto, to the sides of each leaf, by paste, glue, or other suitable adhesive material. The strips at the top and bottoni edges of'the leaves can extend across the fold of the leaves, if desired, thereby strengthening such fold, as is obvious.

'In lieu of folding each strip G over the edge of the leaf it can be in two strips, one on each side of the leaf, as shown in detail in crosssection in Fig. 7, which represents a leaf in detail section having a strip, G, on each side of the leaf at the edge, but not extending around the edge, and in lieu of two strips, as shown in Fig. 7, only one need be used and secured to one side of the leaf, as shown in Fig. S in detail cross-section. It is preferable, however, to have such strip folded over the edge of the leaf and secured as described.

ln Fig. 6 are shown in cross-section fourleaves besides the outsideer cover leaves, B C, the leaves H .l being secured to the leaf D by a strip, K, of cloth or other suitable iieXible material. ln the same way the leaves D E are secured to the leaf O, showing the manner of securing more leaves, when desired, in accordance with this invention.

The leaves H J can be secured by the strip K to the leaf B in lieu of to the leaf D. This manner of binding and securing together of .leaves of sheet-music is very desirable and has many advantages. It is simple, neat, can be easily and conveniently applied, does not interfere with the use of the music-sheets, as the leaves caribe opened out flat, as shown in cross-section in Fig. 4, when in use, and can be as easily closed or folded and quickly turned, and, all being secured together, there is no danger of one or the other dropping from the music-desk, as is frequently the case when the leaves are loose and separate, as heretofore, and by binding the edges as described they are protected and strengthened, and Will not easily tear or become worn from use in turning or handling the leaves.

ln lieu of securing the strips by paste or IOO other adhesive material, they can be secured by stitches orn other ways; but an adhesive material is preferable.

This invention, although more particularly described in connection with sheets of musie, ls applicable as well to newspapers, pamphlets, magazines, books, &e.
